 The Nebraska State Patrol is alerting the public of a scam going around
 Nebraska this week. Over the last few days, NSP has received multiple 
reports of scammers spoofing Nebraska State
 Patrol phone numbers, attempting to scam victims. 

“Scammers
 will use any method they think may work to try to steal your money or 
personal information,” said Colonel John
 Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Scammers often 
attempt to pose as a trusted entity, such as law enforcement. In this 
case, they are posing as Nebraska State Patrol representatives.”

NSP
 has received reports from two different areas of the state regarding 
members of the public receiving phone calls that
 appeared to come from NSP offices in Grand Island or Lincoln. These 
phone calls are referred to as spoofing, an act of mimicking a phone 
number when in reality it is a scammer on the line. The scammer then 
tries to steal personal information by telling the
 victim they have active warrants or need to pay a fine. The call 
recipient has not fallen for the scam in any of the reported occurrences
 in the last few days.


“The Nebraska State Patrol never calls members of the public regarding payment of fines or active warrants,” Bolduc said. “We urge the public to be vigilant with any such phone call and never give out personal information in such cases.”

 provides the following guidance regarding suspicious or potentially 
scam phone calls: Do not provide personal or financial
 information unless you initiated the phone call or are absolutely sure 
you are talking to the intended group. Any reputable organization will 
allow you to hang up and call back so you can ensure you are speaking to
 the correct entity and aren’t being scammed.

Scammers spoofing Nebraska State Patrol phone numbers

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission conservation officers and the Gering Police Department responded to the occurrence of a mountain lion on a security video twice recently.

A mountain lion was recorded on a video in south Gering on March 9, then in a different part of town at 3 a.m. Sunday. It is not known if the animal seen on both videos is the same.

Gering police officers and Game and Parks officers searched the area of Sunday’s incident but could not locate the mountain lion.

According to Game and Parks’ Mountain Lion Response Plan, a mountain lion that is within the limits of a municipality will be killed if it can safely be done, to ensure public safety.

Anyone who observes a mountain lion in person or on video should contact the local police department or Game and Parks immediately.

Game and Parks, Gering PD, respond to mountain lion on video

LINCOLN —&nbsp;Acclaimed Nebraska novelist
 Willa Cather, who would have marked her 150th birthday in 2023, will be
 celebrated throughout the year with a series of events.

The National Willa Cather Center will
 host events locally and nationally for Cather’s 150th birthday and also
 the 100th anniversaries of her Pulitzer Prize for “One of Ours” and the
 publishing of “A Lost Lady” and “April Twilights and Other Poems.”

Cather is celebrated, the center 
explains, for her discovery and use of a “distinctive American language”
 that included authentic immigrant experiences. Novels such as “O 
Pioneers!” and “My Antonia” (published in 1913 and 1918) marked the 
“wellspring” of Cather’s youth in Nebraska.

After winning her Pulitzer Prize, Cather continued to have a successful and prolific career.

Ashley Olson, executive director of 
the Willa Cather Foundation, said it’s important to read and know about 
Cather, especially for Nebraskans, because her work elevated the state.&nbsp;

Cather’s body of work is known 
nationally and internationally, Olson explained, and people identify 
Nebraska and Cather’s hometown of Red Cloud with the author.

“I think it’s important that as 
residents of the state we know our own history and culture, and Cather 
is one voice that can help us learn and study those topics,” Olson said.

One event this year will be the 
unveiling of a statue in Cather’s likeness in the National Statuary Hall
 collection of the U.S. Capitol. Cather will join Chief Standing Bear as
 Nebraska’s two honorees in Statuary Hall. Cather’s statue and replace 
that of J. Sterling Morton in the hall. Fewer than a dozen women are 
represented in the collection.

Littleton Alston of Omaha, who 
created the statue, will also be the first African American artist with 
work represented in the collection.

“As much as it is a celebration of 
Willa Cather and her incredible legacy, it’s a wonderful connection that
 a Nebraska artist has done incredible work to represent her in the 
collection,” Olson said, adding she is confident the statue will be 
unveiled this year.

A significant restoration of Cather’s
 childhood home in Red Cloud, where she lived between the ages of 10 and
 16, is also underway.

According to the Cather center, this 
National Historic Landmark is notable for its preserved vernacular style
 and original wallpaper in Cather’s attic bedroom and will reopen to 
visitors in the latter half of 2023.

The Chadron Police Department is beginning their Turkeys for Tickets program again this year for 2022. This program allows the police officers to opt to issue a turkey to a motorist instead of a ticket for minor traffic violations. The program focuses on traffic safety, but also provides an officer with a different option of enforcement and the motorist with something that may help them out during the holiday season. The turkey can be used by the recipient or the turkey can be paid forward by the motorist to the next traffic stop by the officer.

Traditionally, the Thanksgiving holiday marks the beginning of the busy holiday driving period, and continues through the New Year. The Chadron Police are urging the motoring public to adhere to the rules of the road, particularly when drinking and driving are involved. Motorists who consume alcohol should consider an alternative means of transportation. Additionally, remember;

· Do not drink and drive, designate a sober driver

· Buckle up and make sure that all vehicle occupants are properly restrained

· Pay attention to the weather and road conditions

· Slow down and obey posted speed limits

· Avoid distractions such as cell phone use

The Robert E. And Patricia Schmidt Foundation recently donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross to help support recovery efforts following Hurricane Ian.

The Red Cross has dispatched multiple vehicles, which will most likely be deployed for weeks, and the foundation's gift will help support the volunteers manning the vehicles and help restock supplies.

"Our hearts go out to those effected by this devastating storm," said Schmidt Foundation Chairman Gary Shorman, "and we offer our sincere thanks to the Red Cross for offering much-needed assistance during this recovery.

"The mission of the Red Cross is an admirable one, and we'd urge our communities to do what they can to help by donating."

Burlington Northern-Santa Fe will be working on the railroad crossing at Highway 385 and 88 in the Bridgeport area. The work is scheduled for July 19 and 20.&nbsp;

The work will begin early in the morning of July 19 and is expected to be completed in the afternoon of July 20.&nbsp; 

The crossing will be closed while the work is being done.&nbsp; Please take alternate routes during this time.

Check out this 4.25"+ sized hail stone that was reported on a severe warned supercell thunderstorm 10 miles Southwest of Agate, Nebraska (Sioux County) around 6pm MDT this evening.

The supercell has been ongoing for approximately 4 hours! It started near Douglas, Wyoming at around 2pm MDT! Its tallest radar sampled cloud top heights have reached 60,000 FEET in the air today.

Box Butte County Sheriff Tammy Mowry is advising&nbsp; local residents of another telephone scam.&nbsp; 

Shereiff Mowry says the scammers are posing as Representitives of Publishers Clearing House.&nbsp; &nbsp;When residents answer their phone, the&nbsp; callers tell them they have won a major prize from Publishers Clearing House, but before they can claim the prize, they must first pay the taxes. This amounts to several thousand dollars.&nbsp; This is a scam.&nbsp; &nbsp;Sheriff Mowry says don't ever give out personal or financial information to callers on the phone.&nbsp; If you receive one of these calls, just hang up.&nbsp; 

You may contact the Sheriff's Office at 308-762-6464 to report these calls or if you believe you have been scammed.&nbsp;

CHADRON – Tourism businesses, attractions, employees and volunteers will be recognized for their valuable contributions to the Northwest Nebraska tourism industry with the recent creation of an awards program.

Discover Northwest Nebraska will honor a Business/Attraction of the Year, a Frontline Employee of the Year and a Volunteer of the Year for their efforts in the tourism industry during 2022. The program was announced last week at the organization’s Treasure Chest of the Northwest, the region’s annual tourism-industry gathering.

“Tourism generates more than $20 million in economic impact in Dawes County annually, and we want to encourage businesses, attractions, employees and volunteers in our region to go above and beyond to attract visitors and provide them with excellent customer service,” said Discover Northwest Nebraska Director Kerri Rempp.

Nominations for the awards will be due March 1 each year, and they will be presented at the annual tourism gathering, Treasure Chest of the Northwest, each spring. Online nominations can be submitted at http://discovernwnebraska.com/industry-awards/.

Nearly five dozen members of the regional tourism industry gathered April 21 to prepare for the upcoming season. Customer service, marketing and industry resources were discussed, and a regional brochure exchange also took place. Northwest Nebraska, a cooperation between Dawes and Sioux counties, is coming off of its most successful tourism season. Highlights for the upcoming season include annual events such as Fur Trade Days, Crawford’s July 4 celebration and the Harvest Moon Fall Festival, as well as new additions like the Northwest Nebraska Volksmarch. The Dawes County Historical Museum will be featured on the Nebraska Passport Program and host a Smithsonian traveling exhibit, and the Museum of the Fur Trade is part of Nebraska History’s new Wander Nebraska program.

“We held our first Treasure Chest event in 2021, providing information for the upcoming tourism season and networking opportunities for businesses and attractions serving the regional tourism industry,” Rempp said. “This year’s event included expanded networking opportunities and a regional brochure exchange. Horseback riding is a great way to get outdoors and see the diverse beauty of Nebraska — via miles of extensive equestrian trails in your state parks.

With beautiful scenery, amenities for horse and rider, and considerable acres to roam, here are nine Nebraska Game and Parks locations every equestrian should put on their list for this year.

Fort Robinson State Park: Located in Nebraska’s scenic Pine Ridge, Fort Robinson is truly a horse rider’s paradise. The park offers 20 miles of equestrian trails and great accommodations for both horse and rider. Put your horse up in one of the many stalls available in the large barns, while you kick back at a campsite, lodge room or spacious cabin. Many more miles of trails can be found in Nebraska National Forest land adjacent to the fort.

Branched Oak State Recreation Area: Featuring the largest lake in eastern Nebraska, Branched Oak is a popular recreation spot – and can accommodate equestrians, with 6 miles of interlocking multipurpose trails and a horse camp. Trails wind through trees, open grasslands and scenic overlooks, and the horse camp offers 15 electrical rock pad campsites, water, restrooms, grills, picnic facilities, an accessible mounting ramp, hitching posts and corrals.

Summit Lake State Recreation Area: Named in honor of Nebraska Game and Parks’ 100th&nbsp;anniversary, the Centennial Trail at Summit Lake provides new opportunities for riders in northwest Nebraska. The trail covers more than 10 miles and follows the perimeter of the park. It also features a rock crossing through the lake, a unique feature. Game and Parks plans to add equestrian campgrounds to the park in 2023 or 2024.

Danish Alps State Recreation Area: Take a leisurely ride around the 219-acre Kramper Lake at Danish Alps, named for the early Danish settlers in the area. Besides the scenic horse trail, the park also offers an equestrian campground with 14 horse corrals, hitching posts and water. Stay for fishing, camping and picnicking opportunities at this park in Dakota County.

Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area: Riders at this park can enjoy more than 6 miles of heavily wooded and scenic lake overlook trails, which make for the perfect outdoor adventure. You can also take advantage of a campground with corrals for horses, water, restrooms and picnic areas.

Willow Creek State Recreation Area: Located 1.5 miles southwest of Pierce, scenic Willow Creek State Recreation Area offers a 10-mile horse trail encircling Willow Creek Reservoir and an equestrian campground. All 10 camping sites have paved pads, 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electrical hookups, picnic table and fire ring. This lakeside campground also includes 10 barbless wire fence corrals, hitching posts and a water hydrant.

Pawnee State Recreation Area: Enjoy a scenic ride around the lake with Pawnee’s 6 miles of multipurpose trails. For those who wish to camp with their horses, Pawnee offers a primitive camp that includes picnic tables, drinking water, fire rings and pit toilets. The area has mature trees that provide plenty of shade.

Rock Creek Station State Historical Park: Known as the site where James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok began his bloody gunfighting career, Rock Creek Station has a rich history. Take a trip back in time and ride at this former stage and Pony Express station, which offers 5 miles of trails and a horse camp with 20 corrals, water for horse and rider, picnic tables and grills. Additional riding is available at the adjacent Rock Glen Wildlife Management Area, though riders must observe special regulations.

Two Rivers State Recreation Area: One of the most popular recreation areas in the state, Two Rivers can accommodate equestrians as well. It offers about 12 miles of wooded trails both in the recreation area and the adjoining Two Rivers Wildlife Management Area, though trails in this area are closed during hunting season. The park also offers an equestrian campground with firepits, picnic tables, water and restrooms.

Additional riding is available at the adjacent Rock Glen Wildlife Management Area, though riders must observe special regulations.Two Rivers State Recreation Area: One of the most popular recreation areas in the state, Two Rivers can accommodate equestrians as well. It offers about 12 miles of wooded trails both in the recreation area and the adjoining Two Rivers Wildlife Management Area, though trails in this area are closed during hunting season. Easton Corbin to perform at Five Rocks Amphitheater

The Alliance Arts Council is proud to announce a performance by guitarist Adam Gardino as the finale to their 2020-2021 season.

Adam will perform at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 1 in the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center.&nbsp;

Since 2005 Adam Gardino has been an “up and coming” fingerstyle guitarist, musician and songwriter in the Pikes Peak region. 

 His style combines the smoothness of James Taylor and the energy of Brad Paisley to deliver exciting, jaw dropping performances.  His attention to the intricacies of acoustic guitar arrangements, delivered with a voice as clear as his mountain roots continues to wow audiences today. 

At the age of 16, Adam placed in the Top Five of the International Fingerstyle Competition held in Winfield, KS.  He kept competing in the annual contest, honing his skills and stage craft, hoping to eventually squash those pre-show jitters.  Though the butterflies never flew away, in 2010 he placed 3rd behind Pete Huttlinger and Japan’s Grand Champion Akihiro Tanaka.  After graduating from the University of Colorado Denver in 2012 with a B.S. in Music Performance, he took 1st at 23 years old – among the youngest ever to win.  And most recently in 2019 he re-entered again, after the 5 year mandatory hiatus for 1st Place winners – and won for a second time! 

While working as a musician in Colorado Springs, Adam caught the eye of the legendary cowboy chuck-wagon group the Flying W Wranglers.  He joined them in 2014, and for 5 years he grew in knowledge and experience from the best country and western musicians in the business.  Highlights of his achievements include playing for the Western Music Association, the Academy of Western Artists, the annual Chuckwagons of the West Jamboree, and opening for country singer Josh Turner at the Flathead County Fair in 2018. 

You will love the friendly, easy-going demeanor Adam has on and off the stage.  Quick to break down the “invisible barrier” between performer and audience, goofy-but-true stories and jokes often accompany the high-flying stunts attempted on the fretboard.  As one critic would write, “He could play the phonebook and make it interesting.” 

 Adam will also have “Special Guests” Joe Gardino and Tony Schmid join him for a few pieces. 

&nbsp;Tickets are $10 for Adult, $9 for Seniors and $5 for Students.  Tickets can be purchased at Carnegie Arts Center and Redmans Shoes.  You can also buy tickets at the door. 

 Masks will be required and social distancing protocol will be followed.
