Christmas Music Returns To FM98.1 & AM 1410

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Someone who bought a Powerball ticket in 
Southern California has won a record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot 
after more than three months without anyone hitting the top prize.

The
 winning numbers drawn Tuesday morning at the Florida Lottery draw 
studio in Tallahassee were: white balls 10, 33, 41, 47 and 56, and the 
red Powerball was 10.

The jackpot ticket was sold at Joe’s Service
 Center in Altadena, an unincorporated community in the foothills 
northeast of Los Angeles. A voicemail left for Joe’s Service Center was 
not immediately returned.

The jackpot was by far the largest 
lottery prize ever won, topping the previous record $1.586 billion prize
 won by three Powerball ticketholders in 2016. <a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-d074aec16d0f17eba2cc51c814faa99e">Only four previous jackpots</a>
 have topped $1 billion, but none of those are close to the current 
prize, which started at $20 million back on Aug. 6 and over three 
winless months has grown massive. No one has won the jackpot since Aug. 
3.

The jackpot was initially reported as <a href="https://apnews.com/article/powerball-jackpot-drawing-today-what-to-know-75a57b3d83a5c5d1e0264c55261671cf">an estimated $1.9 billion</a> on Monday, but the prize was increased to $2.04 billion Tuesday morning after updated calculations.

The
 Multi-State Lottery Association said Monday night’s scheduled drawing 
was delayed by nearly 10 hours until Tuesday because a participating 
lottery had issues processing sales.

The problems in holding a 
drawing Monday night were blamed on one participating lottery's 
inability to process its sales data. After the lottery, which wasn't 
identified, completed its pre-draw procedures, the drawing was able to 
go ahead.

“Protecting the integrity of the draw is of upmost 
importance, and we were able to do that during this historic drawing 
with the cooperation of all participating lotteries,” said Drew Svitko, 
the chairman of the Powerball Product Group and executive director of 
the Pennsylvania Lottery.

Terry Rich, a former director of the 
Iowa Lottery who also served on the Powerball board, said the delay was 
likely due to a two-part verification system of ticket sales that makes 
use of an outside vendor to ensure all is in order before the game's 
numbers are drawn.

“Each state must verify through a dual process 
that all of the sales and dollars match before the Multi-State Lottery 
Association can do the draw," said Rich, who headed the Iowa Lottery for
 10 years and was president of the North American Lottery Association. 
“This is a state-by-state procedure, which separates the whole process 
and has been very effective."

Rich said state lotteries deal with 
similar problems several times a year but the delays usually don't 
attract much attention because the potential jackpots are far less than 
was up for grabs this week.

The winning numbers and recorded video of the drawing were posted to the Powerball's YouTube channel.

The $2.04 billion prize is for a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/powerball-jackpot-annuity-vs-cash-0e741f164106c0f4dba89707c5763c99">winner who chooses an annuity</a>, paid annually over 29 years. Nearly all winners instead opt for cash, which was valued at $997.6 million.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

The game is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The safe distance of history is gone in the 10 new episodes set within recent memory for many and whose stories, sight unseen, have been denounced. The death of Queen Elizabeth, 96, in September adds an uneasy dimension: We speculate freely about the famous before and after they're gone, but is more owed a country's beloved and longest-serving monarch?

Among the prominent critics is Judi Dench, an Oscar-winner for her role as Elizabeth I in "Shakespeare in Love." In a letter to The Times of London, the actor blasted elements of the drama as "cruelly unjust to the individuals and damaging to the institution they represent."

She called for each episode to carry a disclaimer labeling it as fiction. It's a demand that Netflix has heard before and continues to resist, framing the series as drama inspired by historical events. Series creator Peter Morgan was unavailable for comment, Netflix said.

Dench is not amused by the streaming service's intransigence.

"The time has come for Netflix to reconsider — for the sake of a family and a nation so recently bereaved, as a mark of respect to a sovereign who served her people so dutifully for 70 years," she wrote.

Her plea followed a rebuke of the series from former Prime Minister John Major, shown in the new season being lobbied by Prince Charles — now King Charles III — to help maneuver the queen's abdication. A spokesman for Major labeled the scene as false and malicious.

Cast members including Jonathan Pryce, who plays Elizabeth's stalwart husband Prince Philip, beg to differ with the series' detractors.

"The queen is in no danger from 'The Crown,'" Pryce told The Associated Press. He said critics are lambasting the new season despite ignorance of it, reminding him of what the British once termed "the Mary Whitehouse effect."

Whitehouse had "a huge following and she criticized programs she'd never seen," he said. "I think a lot of the protests this time, people haven't seen this series. They don't know how these issues are treated. I have to say they're treated with a great deal of integrity and a great deal of sensitivity."

Imelda Staunton, stepping in as the latest actor to play Elizabeth, defended the series, its award-winning creator and its viewers.

"I think it's underestimating the audience," Staunton told AP. "There have been four seasons where people know it's been written by Peter Morgan and his team of writers."

Morgan, writer of the movie "The Queen" and play "The Audience," both starring the Oscar- and Tony-winning Helen Mirren as Elizabeth II, has made royals a specialty. The recent criticism may suggest his winter of discontent is ahead, but Morgan has it easier than another writer who feasted on the British monarchs as material: William Shakespeare, who dramatized the reigns of seven kings.

All were in the past, with Shakespeare treading lightly around the rulers of his time, Elizabeth I and James I.

"We all imagine it being sort of sweetness and light, and we've all seen 'Shakespeare in Love' and everyone's sitting around drinking. Actually, it was like Stalinist Russia in many ways," Shakespearean expert Andrew Dickson said of the rigidly controlled society in which the bard worked circa 1585 to 1613.

Plays were approved by the master of the revels, a sort of civil servant with the power of censorship, said Dickson, author of "Worlds Elsewhere: Journeys Around Shakespeare's Globe" and "The Globe Guide to Shakespeare." Authors could and were imprisoned, or worse, for transgressions, he said.

"His very few representations of royals recent to his time were pretty flattering, and and early audiences even called them patriotic," said Harvard teacher-scholar Jeffrey R. Wilson, author of "Shakespeare and Trump" and "Richard III's Bodies." Theater in general was viewed as illusory and deceptive, he said.

"He told this politicized version that was flattering to the powers that were in his time," Wilson said. It became the "dominant framework for telling English royal history all the way through the 18th and 19th centuries. It's now called the 'Tudor myth,'" he said, a reference to the House of Tudor that ruled for more than a century.

It's problematic if people similarly begin recounting the Netflix show's "fictionalized version of history as fact," he said.

Lesley Manville, who plays the queen's sibling Princess Margaret this season, said she defers to those in charge of "The Crown" on whether a disclaimer is or isn't warranted.

"For my part, I can only be crystal clear that what I'm doing is a drama," Manville said. "We've never supported it to be anything other than a drama about a real family, a very world famous family."

Staunton said she's grateful that the season addresses a period that was "quite tumultuous, and therefore that creates quite a good drama." She traced the recent protests about the series directly to the queen's death.

"There's no doubt that if we were releasing the series two years ago there wouldn't be this amount of sensitivity, which again is absolutely understandable," Staunton said. She found herself deeply affected by the queen's death, which she learned of after a day of taping on the show's sixth season.

"'Why am I feeling so distraught?'" she recalled asking herself. "But of course I'd been living with her for two and a half years" of preparation and production.

For Pryce, working on the series has provided a better understanding of the royal family.

"They've always been a part of society and it looks like they're going to continue for some time," he said. "I'm looking forward to King Charles' reign, and seeing what he can do to change things."

Deputies responded around 11 a.m. following reports of a medical emergency at the home in Lancaster, a desert city about 70 miles (112 kilometers) north of downtown Los Angeles, said Deputy Alejandra Parra with the LA County Sheriff's Department.

Parra said the deputies found a deceased person at the residence, but she could not immediately confirm it was Carter. Authorities later said a house sitter found a man in the bathtub in the home and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Carter opened for the Backstreet Boys tour in 1997 — the same year his gold-selling debut self-titled album released. He reached triple-platinum status with his sophomore album, 2000's "Aaron's Party (Come Get It)," which produced hit singles including the title song and "I Want Candy." His videos received regular airplay on Disney and Nickelodeon.

The singer earned acting credits through his appearance on television shows including "Lizzie McGuire." He starred alongside his brother, Nick, and their siblings B.J., Leslie and Angel Carter on the E! unscripted series "House of Carters" in 2006.

Carter made his Broadway debut in 2001 as JoJo in the musical "Seussical." In 2009, he appeared on the ABC competition show "Dancing with the Stars," finishing in fifth place with partner Karina Smirnoff. He was featured on the Food Network cooking show "Rachel vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off" in 2012.

In 2017, Carter opened up about his substance abuse on an episode of "The Doctors." He was in rehab that same year after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana charges. He checked himself in for treatment on a few occasions in an effort to regain custody of his son Prince.

Carter's fifth and final studio album, "LOVE," was released in 2018.

All are now members of the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame after a rousing show Saturday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. They're joined in the Hall by Carly Simon, Eurythmics and Dolly Parton, who felt like she didn't deserve the honor and wrote a rock song for the occasion. Duran Duran overcame technical glitches to thrill a room full of its fans. Richie's set went from the mellow ballad "Hello" to the celebration of "All Night Long." Benatar showed off her powerful pipes with "Love is a Battlefield." Eminem brought on Aerosmith's Steven Tyler to sing the chorus of "Dream On" for 2003's "Sing for the Moment."

The four acts found very different ways to celebrate on Saturday night, but all can now forever say they're Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Famers. So are Carly Simon, Eurythmics, Harry Belafonte, Judas Priest and Dolly Parton, who gave the honor an enthusiastic embrace after temporarily turning it down.

The first act inducted at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles after a memorable speech from a shaven-headed Robert Downey Jr., Duran Duran took the stage and launched into their 1981 breakthrough hit "Girls on Film."

The shrieking crowd was there for it, but the music wasn't. The band was all but inaudible other than singer Simon Le Bon, whose vocals were essentially acapella.

It was a fun if inauspicious beginning to a mostly slick and often triumphant show.

"The wonderful spontaneous world of rock 'n' roll!" the 64-year-old Le Bon shouted as the band stopped for a do-over.

They kicked back in at full volume, playing a set that included "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Ordinary World," quickly snapping back into what Downey called their essential quality: "CSF — cool, sophisticated fun."

Lionel Richie brought both chill and warmth to the room hours later, opening his set with a spare rendition of his ballad "Hello" that seemed to make him nearly break down from the weight of the moment.

"His songs are the soundtrack of my life, your life, everyone's life," Lenny Kravitz said in inducting Richie.

After "Hello," Richie breezed into his 1977 hit with the Commodores, "Easy." The vibe went from smooth to triumphant when Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl made a surprise appearance to play a guitar solo and swap vocals with Richie. That led into a singalong, celebratory rendition of 1983's "All Night Long" that brought the night's biggest reaction.

In his acceptance speech, Richie lashed out at those during his career who accused him of straying too far from his Black roots.

"Rock &amp; Roll is not a color," he said. "It is a feeling. It is a vibe. And if we let that vibe come through, this room will grow and grow and grow."

Eurythmics took the stage next with a soulful, danceable rendition of 1986's "Missionary Man."

"Well I was born an original sinner, I was born from original sin," singer Annie Lennox belted, bringing the audience clapping and to its feet four hours into the show. It was followed by a rousing rendition of their best-known hit, "Sweet Dreams."

Moments later her musical partner, Dave Stewart, called Lennox "one of the greatest performers, singers and songwriters of all time."

"Thank you, Dave, for this great adventure," a tearful Lennox said.

As he has been throughout his career, Eminem was the outlier. He was the only hip-hop artist among the inductees, the only one whose heyday came after the 1980s, and he brought an edge to the evening that was otherwise missing outside of the heavy metal stylings of Judas Priest.

He also took the guest star game to another level. After opening briefly with 1999's "My Name Is," he brought on Aerosmith's Steven Tyler to sing the chorus of "Dream On" for 2003's "Sing for the Moment," which samples the Aerosmith classic. Then he brought on Ed Sheeran to sing his part on the 2017 Eminem jam "River" as rain fell on the stage.

"I'm probably not supposed to actually be here tonight for a couple of reasons," Eminem, wearing a black hoodie, said as he accepted the honor. "One, I know, is that I'm a rapper and this is the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame."

He's only the 10th hip-hop artist among well over 300 members of the Hall of Fame.

He was inducted by his producer and mentor Dr. Dre, whom he credited with saving his life.

But hitmakers of the 1980s defined the night.

"Pat always reached into the deepest part of herself and came roaring out of the speakers," Sheryl Crowe said in her speech inducting Benatar.

Benatar, inducted along with her longtime musical partner and husband Neil Giraldo, took the stage with him and displayed that power moments later.

"We are young!" the 69-year-old sang, her long, gray hair flowing as she soared through a version of 1983's "Love is a Battlefield."

Inductees absent from the ceremony included Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor, who is four years into a fight with advanced prostate cancer, the 95-year-old Belafonte and Simon, who lost sisters Joanna Simon and Lucy Simon, both also singers, to cancer on back-to-back days.

Carly Simon was a first-time nominee this year more than 25 years after becoming eligible. Olivia Rodrigo, 60 years Simon's junior and by far the youngest performer of the night, then took the stage to sing Simon's signature song, "You're So Vain."

Janet Jackson appeared in a black suit with a massive pile of hair atop her head, remaking the cover of her breakthrough album "Control," as she inducted the two men who made that and many other records with her, writer-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

When the nominees were announced in May, Parton "respectfully" declined, saying it didn't seem suitable for her to take a spot as a country-to-the-core artist. She was convinced otherwise, and ended up the headliner Saturday night.

"I'm a rock star now!" she shouted as she accepted the honor. "This is a very, very, very special night."

Parton said she would have to retroactively earn her spot.

She disappeared and emerged moments later decked out in black leather with an electric guitar and broke into a song she wrote just for the occasion.

"I've been rockin' rockin' rockin' rockin' since the day I was born," she sang, "and I'll be rockin' to the day I'm gone."

She closed the night leading an all-star jam of her fellow inductees on her country classic "Jolene." Le Bon, Benatar and even Judas Priest singer Rob Halford took a verse.

"We got a star-studded stage up here," Parton said. "I feel like a hillbilly in the city."
