LINCOLN — Six new troopers were sworn in on Friday — which is said to be the smallest graduating class ever for the Nebraska State Patrol, though a patrol official expressed hope that recruiting will turn around.

Col. John Bolduc, superintendent of the Patrol, said a new recruit class of 17 will begin training in January.

“We hope that begins a new trend,” Bolduc said. “We don’t think this (six new troopers) will be the standard, this will be a one off.”

Interest in law enforcement as a career has slumped nationally in recent years, in part due to the negative publicity following cases like the police-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020, and in part due to the demands of the job. The labor market is also tight.

Young people seek more flexible hours and guaranteed time off, according to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.theiacp.org/sites/default/files/239416_IACP_RecruitmentBR_HR_0.pdf">a report by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.</a>

“Mandated overtime and missing holidays with family are less appealing to Millennials and members of Generation Z,” concluded the report, entitled “A Crisis for Law Enforcement.”

Retirements and resignations are outpacing the number of new recruits, according to a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.themarshallproject.org/2023/01/21/police-hiring-government-jobs-decline">report by The Marshall Project</a>. It cited government figures indicating that the number of local law enforcement employees had declined by 4% from March 2020 to August 2022 and that government workers as a whole decreased by 5%.

“This is a national trend,” Bolduc said. “We’re thankful for their willingness to step up and serve.”

The State Patrol, according to its annual report filed earlier this month, added 16 new recruits earlier in 2023.

But even with the six new troopers who began work Friday, the state law enforcement agency has 68 vacancies in its authorized strength of 482 sworn positions, which is&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/02/21/state-patrol-seeks-some-more-recruits-as-it-addresses-shortage-of-troopers/">one less vacancy than in February ,when staffing was described as&nbsp;</a>the worst ever.

Eleven recruits began training this fall, but only six graduated Friday.

Bolduc said that was a higher-than-normal washout rate and said recruit classes typically lose only only a couple of candidates to injuries or other factors.

“Sometimes, people get into the process and decide this isn’t for me. And that happens,” he said.

The state has increased trooper paychecks —<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2022/12/21/nebraska-state-troopers-to-get-22-raises-under-historic-new-labor-contract/">&nbsp;a record 22% increase in trooper salaries</a>&nbsp;was effective July 1 — but the hike came as other, competing law enforcement agencies also upped their pay.

Bolduc told the new troopers they will see “the good, bad and the ugly” of society, but also will reap the rewards of serving the public and making a difference.

He noted that troopers had “two very close calls” this past week, including a trooper who was seriously injured Monday near Ashland when a teen driver rammed his cruiser during a high-speed pursuit.

“You signed up for a challenging career,” he said.

Friday’s graduation ceremony in the State Capitol Rotunda also included speeches from Gov. Jim Pillen and Attorney General Mike Hilgers. Secretary of State Bob Evnen administered the oath of office. The hour-long ceremony ended with the bagpipe-and-drum corps of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office marching out with the new troopers.

They are: Elizabeth Forbes of Fullerton, whose duty station will be Nebraska City;&nbsp;Braden Heidbrink of Lincoln, to duty in Beatrice;&nbsp;Spencer Kort of Schuyler, to Beatrice; Chad Reutlinger of Lexington, where he will be stationed; Marco Vera Chavez of Ord, to Alliance; and&nbsp;Rylan Weaver of Wakefield, to Omaha.

During last week's rings, the Habitat for Humanity and the North Platte Rotary Club had match days and both days ended up being a very successful day for the organizations to match. The Salvation Army is looking for immediate volunteers to fill in hours at the kettle locations in North Platte. Volunteers provide service to local non-profit organizations such as the RSVP Literacy Program, Grace Ministries Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity and American Red Cross, just to name a few.

In the past 50 years, RSVP volunteers have reported a total of 4,316,101 hours of volunteer service to meet community needs. 4,316,101 hours is valued at $137,252,011.80 in volunteer support and manpower needed to make our community the unique and wonderful place it is today!

Currently there are 595 enrolled volunteers. In the past 12 months volunteers have served a total of 70,272 hours.

On December 3rd, 2023 at the North Platte Area RSVP Volunteer Recognition Event six volunteers were recognized for serving the most volunteer hours during a twelve month period (from October 1st, 2022-September 30th, 2023). The three ladies recognized for serving the most hours were Julie Wiezorek (1,688 ½ hours), Alma Bullington (1,578 ½ hours) &amp; Mary Lou Derman (1,117 hours). The three men recognized for serving the most hours were Chuck Scripter (1,854 1/2 hours), Pat Wiezorek (1,389 hours) and Dan Ridgway (1,046 hours).&nbsp;

Volunteers were also recognized for their Years of Service. Volunteers who reached a milestone year (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30) are as follows:

Brady, Ne - Mrs. Rebecca Stearns, Math teacher and coach at Brady Public Schools is the North Platte Post December 2023 Teacher of The Month, Presented by <a href="https://www.prairiefriendsandflowers.com/">Prairie Friends &amp; Flowers</a> in North Platte.&nbsp;

Stearns was nominated and then voted for by over 40 individuals on the North Platte Post. Here is what one nominator had to say about Mrs. Stearns:

"Mrs. Stearns deserves to win this contest because she has every awesome quality when it comes to being the best teacher. Communication is number one. She can pick up on any child's verbal cues. She communicates with parent's if there is an issue going on so no kid is ever left behind. She is creative in every way. She is always a junior class sponsor. She makes prom happen, even if the junior's are struggling for money. She can always make it work with her creative mind. She is is creative in every class she teaches by figuring out what best suits each student Individually. By assessing each student individually they have the best environment to learn in. She is one awesome leader. She shows the kids that being organized can help you find things easier and that it helps you in general to get things done on time. She has patience with every student as she was a paraeducator before becoming a teacher. She sees things in another view, like from a troubled behavioral student, a student going through hard times and so on. She is able to teach any student. She has strong emotional intelligence meaning she is always professional and is respected by her students! She has incredible classroom management. When kids go from hating math to loving it, you know a teacher is doing their job, and that's her!! She has a strong work ethic. Nothing get her down! She puts her mind to every thing she does! She never gives up on a student or task that is asked of her. She shows empathy for her students. A student could be struggling with their ADHD or any emotional problem and she can always sense when something is wrong. She will make sure that student is okay and able to take on the rest of the day. She gives respect therefore she gets it in return. After being a paraeducator for years before becoming a teacher, she knows her students on another level. She can relate to how they feel. She has awesome listening skills. She doesn't listen to respond instead she is a active listener and truly listens to how her students feel. Last but not least she is passionate about teaching, coaching, and about anything thrown at her. She loves seeing smiles on the Brady students' faces. She wants each and every student to want to be at Brady public schools everyday and love it! So if anyone deserves to win this contest it's her. She puts her whole self in and wants the best for each and every student, and that's hard to come by!"

December Teacher of the Month is Brady educator

North Platte, Neb.&nbsp;- Mid-Plains Community College nursing students prepare to deliver gifts to 50 health care residents at Centennial Park Wednesday.

The students created Christmas tree ornaments and also purchased gifts for the residents they worked with this semester as part of their clinical rotations.

Funds for the gifts were provided by the college’s chapters of the Nebraska State Student Nurses Association and the Licensed Practical Nurse Association of Nebraska.

MPCC nursing students deliver gifts to Centennial Park

Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE: UNP) announced the appointment of John Tien to its board of directors, effective immediately.

Tien most recently served as deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the first Asian American to ever hold the position, from 2021 until his retirement in July 2023. During his tenure, Tien served as the department’s chief operating officer, responsible for operations, technology, budget, personnel, risk management, customer service and facilities and infrastructure. He oversaw a multi-billion-dollar budget, facilities in all 50 states and more than 3,000 personnel stationed overseas in more than 75 countries. Upon his retirement, Tien received the department’s highest honor bestowed on a civilian, the DHS Distinguished Public Service Medal.

“John’s global perspective on operations, technology and risk management are unique and bring a new perspective to Union Pacific,” said Chairman of the Board Mike McCarthy. “With 40% of Union Pacific’s shipments originating or terminating outside the U.S., John’s global perspective will be critical as we plan for the future and ensure we have the right mix of skills and expertise on the board.”

Tien has held leadership roles throughout his career, dating back to when he joined the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, becoming the first Asian American to serve as First Captain and brigade commander, the school’s top-ranked cadet position. He served three combat tours in Iraq and received the Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Combat Action Badge and the Valorous Unit Award.

Tien later served as National Security Council (NSC) Director for Iraq counterinsurgency operations in the Bush Administration and as the NSC Senior Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan in the Obama Administration. In the latter role, he represented President Obama with several countries and multilateral organizations, including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He retired following 24 years of service as a U.S. Army combat arms officer, achieving the rank of Colonel.

Tien joined Citigroup and spent 10 years serving in senior executive roles, including chief administrative officer and chief of staff for Citi’s Global Consumer Operations and Technology organization, chief operating officer and chief technology officer for Macy’s private label and co-brand credit card portfolio for Citi Retail Services, and head of business and process re-engineering transformation for Citigroup’s entire U.S. Consumer Bank.

“John brings an impressive track record with a history of protecting critical infrastructure and people,” said Union Pacific Chief Executive Officer Jim Vena. “The entire board welcomes John and I look forward to working with him as Union Pacific strives to be the best in safety and provide our customers the service we promise.”

NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains United Way is providing a Holiday Cafe at the Holiday Craft Fair and Vendor Show that is going on this Saturday and Sunday at the D&amp;N Event Center in North Platte. Instead of a traditional concession stand of nachos, hot dogs, etc, this year, the united way will offer a Holiday Cafe with different breakfast and lunch menu items and beverages. The craft fair and vendor show runs Saturday from 10:00am-4:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am-3:00pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

DECEMBER 14, 2023 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The recruits of the Nebraska State Patrol’s 68th&nbsp;Basic Recruit Class will graduate during a ceremony at the Nebraska State Capitol this Friday, December 15, 2023. The ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Rotunda of the Capitol, 1445 K. Street, in Lincoln.

Remarks will be provided by Governor Jim Pillen, Attorney General Mike Hilgers, and Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. The recruits will receive their badges and take the oath of office, which will be administered by Secretary of State Robert Evnen.

Following graduation, the recruits will begin their careers at Nebraska State Troopers, serving in a variety of communities across the state.

Nebraska State Patrol 68th Basic Recruit Camp to Graduate Friday

At approximately 10:27 AM, police officers responded to a report of gunshots in the 700 block of West 8th Steet.&nbsp; Upon arrival, the officers located five 9mm casings at the scene.&nbsp; An unoccupied van parked nearby appeared to have been struck by two of the 9mm rounds.&nbsp; An occupied home was in the line of site of the shooter.&nbsp; Witnesses reported a male subject knocked on the door of a nearby house before the shots were fired.&nbsp; The van is owned by the resident of the home.&nbsp; The suspect walked about two blocks after the shooting and entered a home located in the 700 block of West 10th Street.

Officers contacted the residents of the home the suspect entered after the shooting.&nbsp; The officers located a man matching the description of the suspect and took 20-year-old Kage J. Anthony into custody.&nbsp; A 9mm semi-automatic pistol was located and later found to have been stolen during a 2021 burglary.&nbsp; Anthony did not wish to add any clarity to the event.&nbsp; Police learned that the victim and suspect were familiar with each other.

Anthony was arrested for discharging a firearm at a person, building or vehicle; possession of a stolen firearm; and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

&nbsp; County wide page for structure fire in Ogallala city limits. Agency responded with command, engine31, Rescue1, and Tower50. KC EMS responded with MAC60, MAC1, and MAC3. KCEM Kling responded to provide support resources (Red Cross) for affected residents. Paxton cancelled enroute. KLFD engine cancelled enroute. Brule FD responded with command and engine. OPD responded for traffic/scene control.

OVFD FF entered and extinguished basement fire in approx 15 minutes. Salvage, overhaul and extension/hot spot search took approximately an hour. EMS evaluated occupants but did not transport. Ne SFM investigating incident. No smoke detectors were sounding inside the structure. No civilian or FF injuries reported to command. Structure currently not habitable.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dunkin’ Unveils Newly Remodeled Next Generation Restaurant of the Future in North Platte, NE   

Mid-Plains Community College nursing students spent Wednesday wrapping gifts for the North Platte Police Department’s Santa Cop program.

The program provides Christmas presents to children in need who are identified through The Salvation Army of North Platte. The nursing students have helped wrap the gifts every year since the program’s inception in 1985.

The police department is responsible for organizing the event and distributing the gifts. A total of 86 children in Lincoln County will benefit from the program this year.

Ogallala BBB Sophomore Sawyer Smith postgame interview vs Lexington (12/1)

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Prairie Arts Center Executive Holly Carlini about what's going on at the Prairie Arts Center. The duo chatted about the Statewide Holiday Passport, ladies night out and classes the PAC is offering.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - &nbsp;The 2023 Holiday Passport is officially underway and the PAC is one of 20 attractions on this years passport. All four floors at the PAC is full decked out in holiday decorations and will be on display until January 7th. The floors are decorated in different themes.&nbsp;

Ladies night out is going on tomorrow in downtown North Platte and the PAC will be providing games and activities. This years theme is Willy Wonka. Even thought you have to sign up, for folks who did not get signed up are still invited to come shop and check out the discounts.&nbsp;

Lastly, the PAC is offering different classes for anyone to enjoy. A fun one going on tomorrow is a beer tasting with Pal's Brewing Company and you get to paint with beer. Also going on tomorrow is edible watercolor cookie class. If you would like to sign up for these classes or any classes, <a href="https://www.prairieartscenter.org/classes">click here.&nbsp;</a>

Ogallala BBB post-game interview with Ogallala assistant coach Jeremy Smith vs NPSP (12/12)

KEARNEY, NEB. - Ten farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness professionals from across Nebraska have been selected for Nebraska Farm Bureau’s (NEFB) 2024 Leadership Academy.&nbsp;They will begin a year-long program starting Feb. 15-16 in Kearney.

“The goal of leadership academy is to equip the future leaders of Farm Bureau with the tools they need to successfully advocate for agriculture, connect with members and embody the grassroots mission.&nbsp;The opportunities to serve in leadership roles in Farm Bureau and our state are vast and Leadership Academy provides participants the opportunity to develop the skills needed to step into those roles&nbsp;and positively impact their local communities,” said Audrey Schipporeit, NEFB’s director of generational engagement and facilitator of the 2024 Leadership Academy.

Academy members will participate in sessions&nbsp;<a>focused on leadership development, understanding the county, state, and national structure of Farm Bureau and its grassroots network, policy work on agricultural issues, and the importance of agricultural literacy. The group will also travel to the Capitols in Lincoln and Washington, D.C. to visit with elected officials and agenc</a>y representatives.

“We congratulate this group of diverse individuals and are excited to support their passion, ambition, and dedication to agriculture. We can't wait to see the positive impact they will have on their communities, state, and world,”&nbsp;said Schipporeit.

The 2024 Nebraska Farm Bureau Leadership Academy members are:

James McArtor, a member of Keith County Farm Bureau, graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanized Systems Management-Production Option and a minor in the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program. He works with his father as an owner/operator of McArtor Family Farms near Grant, where they farm in Perkins County. James is a partner of McArtor Trucking, LLC, and contracts with local COOPs to transport grain primarily during the winter season. He additionally hires out as a custom sprayer applicator to area farmers.

Robert Stuart is a member of Dawson County Farm Bureau and a fifth-generation farmer from Lexington. The Stuart family has been farming the same land since 1888. Robert is married to Megan Stuart, and they have two children, Harrison age four and Eleanor age two. Robert grows corn and soybeans with his parents and brother and operates a small-scale feedlot.

Clade Anderson, a member of Sherman/Valley County Farm Bureau, lives near Ord. He grew up on a diversified farm in central Kansas and attended&nbsp;Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) earning an associate degree in agronomy before continuing his education at Fort Hayes State university earning bachelor's degrees in agronomy and agricultural business.&nbsp;Clade is currently employed as a sales agronomist for Country Partners Cooperative.

Sam Gifford is a member of the Lancaster County Farm Bureau and now resides in Kearney. He graduated from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln with a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics and is currently attending the University of Nebraska - Kearney pursuing his master’s in business administration while working as an agribusiness professional. He was born and raised in the Cornhusker State and has a passion for agriculture that stems from his third-generation family farm and ranch. In his free time, Sam enjoys working on the ranch, golfing, and cheering on the Huskers.

Katie Nolles, a member of Boyd County Farm Bureau, is a sixth-generation rancher and an agricultural education teacher. She graduated from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln with a degree in Agricultural Education and will graduate with her master’s degree in School Counseling from Chadron State College in May of 2024. Katie enjoys raising cattle alongside her family on the ranch where they have a Hereford seedstock and commercial recip operation. In her spare time, Katie enjoys being involved in her church, judging livestock shows, and reading.

Christopher Kuehn is a member of Kearney/Franklin County Farm Bureau and is a fourth generation farmer and rancher. He runs his operation with his father, where they raise mostly irrigated corn, soybeans, and wheat along with a calving herd of about 200 Hereford cows. Christopher has served as president of the County Farm Bureau board for 10 years.&nbsp; He is also very active as an elder in his church, in the community on the County Extension board, and is a director with the Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards. Chris and his wife Tessa raised their two children across the road from the original Kuehn homestead near Heartwell, Nebraska.

Daniel Kristensen, a member of Kearney/Franklin County Farm Bureau, has been involved in agriculture his entire life. He is a fourth-generation corn and soybean farmer that just finished his tenth year managing his family's operation. He has developed leadership skills by being involved with Franklin/Kearney County Corn Growers, Franklin/Kearney County Cattleman's Association, and other agricultural affiliated organizations. Besides farming, Daniel enjoys politics and agricultural economics as well as coaching junior high basketball for Minden Public Schools.

Jordon Harms is a member of Clay County Farm Bureau and is a fourth-generation farmer near Glenvil. He’s passionate about technology and isn’t afraid to bring new ideas and strategies to his family’s operation. Jordon also sells seed for Beck’s Hybrids which allows him to share the latest seed and agronomy advancements with his customers. Off the farm, Jordon enjoys spending time with his family and friends and drumming on the praise team at church.

Chris Popken, a member of Dodge County Farm Bureau, lives near Hooper. Chris graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Mechanical Engineering degree and went on to work for Deere &amp; Co in Nebraska and Eastern Washington in a variety of roles. Chris moved back to Nebraska when an opportunity to start farming arose. He raises corn and soybeans, has a Channel Seedsman dealership, and tunes off-highway equipment. Chris enjoys spending time traveling with his wife Nichole and passing along his love for farming to his three daughters.

Kellie Kennedy is a member of Nemaha County Farm Bureau and is a fifth-generation farmer with her husband Steve near Nemaha.&nbsp; Along with her husband and son, they operate a rotational row crop farm of soybeans, yellow and white corn, and alfalfa, plus raise a cow/calf herd and background heifers.&nbsp; Kellie and her daughter also raise pumpkins and other fall produce for retail sale.&nbsp; She is involved with her community in various causes and is a grandmother of six. Kellie currently holds the position of the OA/PKR of the Nemaha County Farm Bureau.
