Twelve new members were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at North Platte Community College Sunday.

They are NPCC students:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

PTK is the world’s largest and most prestigious honor society for two-year college students, and NPCC is home to the Alpha Beta Theta chapter.

Students are invited to join based on their grade point average. To be considered, they must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and have a GPA of at least 3.5.

NPCC’s induction ceremony included a presentation by psychology instructor Courtney Johnston, a candle lighting and a presentation of yellow stoles, which new inductees will wear at commencement May 10.

NPCC inducts Phi Theta Kappa members

Seven high school students will earn associate degrees from Mid-Plains Community College this year before receiving their high school diplomas.

The accomplishment comes after all of them successfully completed enough qualifying classes through MPCC’s early entry program.

Often referred to as concurrent enrollment or dual credit, early entry courses allow high school students to take college-level classes and earn credits toward both a high school diploma and a college degree simultaneously.

“These graduates are great examples of high school students utilizing the expanded early entry offerings at Mid-Plains Community College to earn associate degrees,” said Kayla Thurman, director of Early Entry and Program Development at MPCC. “Early entry is more accessible to area students than ever before. They can enroll in classes online, at their high schools or attend in-person at any MPCC campus location. I would like to congratulate all the students on their achievements this year.”

Bancroft had the most college credits of the group with 66. She began taking dual credit classes, as well as classes strictly for college credit, as a sophomore in high school.

“I am really glad that I had the opportunity,” Bancroft said. “It will be easier for me in the long run. It will save me a lot of money, and I won’t have to worry about taking generals in college. I can focus on what I want to do.”

Bancroft’s long-term goal is to pursue a career in the field of accounting.

North Platte, Ne - Joe Bellm, CEO and promoter of BST announced Monday afternoon that the double -header opening weekend dirt races that were planned for this Friday &amp; Saturday have been postponed due to forecasted temperatures in the 40's this weekend.&nbsp;

It was going to be an epic weekend of Sprint Cars with former World of Outlaws champ Sammy Swindell planning to be in North Platte for the weekend. Bellm said "we're postponing this because of the fan experiance". He said "no fans want to sit out in the cold and watch cars go in circles when its likely colder than 40's being that we race at night".&nbsp;

The double header will likely be postponed until May 17 &amp; 18, also a Friday/Saturday and the Northern &amp; Southern Plains ASCS Sprint cars&nbsp; are open that weekend and Bellm believes it may be a better weekend for racing anyway. Stay tuned to Eagle Radio for dates.&nbsp;

The next racing at Lincoln County Raceway will be on May 4th in North Platte which will be "Nascar Night". Former Nascar drivers Kenny Wallace and Kenny Schrader are scheduled to race that night in North Platte. Racing at Lincoln County Raceway this weekend postponed due to forecast

Sandhills/North Platte/Panhandle Post&nbsp;

Chappell, Neb. - Union Pacific is currently investigating what caused a intermodal train to derail Sunday afternoon in Chappell.&nbsp;

According to Union Pacific Spokesperson Meg Siffring, at about 4:00 p.m. CT/3:00 p.m. MT, on April 14, approximately 35 Union Pacific train cars derailed near Highway 385 and Junky Rd in Chappell. The UP train was traveling along the Sidney Subdivision.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The train derailment caused US Highway 30 in both directions to close from Lodgepole to US Highway 21 for about 2 hours. Traffic was being diverted to I-80 as an alternate route during the time. The west side of Chappell was evacuated but the evacuation was lifted around 7:45 p.m. CT/6:45 p.m. MT according to the Chappell Volunteer Fire Department.&nbsp;

According to Siffring in a written statement to the POST, there were no injuries. Cleanup is underway, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.&nbsp;

Chappell, Neb. - A Union Pacific Intermodal train derailed Sunday afternoon in the small town of Chappell. The train derailment caused US Highway 30 in both directions to close from Lodgepole to US Highway 21 for about 2 hours. US Highway 30 is now open in both directions according to NE 511. The derailment blocked both tracks. The UP train was traveling along the Sidney Subdivision.

Union Pacific crews are on scene working on the cleanup process of the derailment. It is unknown what caused the train to derail, if there are any injuries or fatalities resulting from the derailment at this time. The POST has reached out to Union Pacific and is awaiting a response.&nbsp;

Union Pacific says 35 cars derailed in Sunday's derailment in Chappell

(April 15, 2024) Lexington, Neb.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a href="http://www.dawsonpower.com/" target="_blank">Dawson Public Power District</a>&nbsp;has awarded Isaac Anderson the 2024 Dawson PPD Utility Line Scholarship. The scholarship is valued at $2,000. Anderson, of North Platte, is the son of Patrick and Katie Lussetto, also of North Platte. He is currently attending&nbsp;<a href="https://northeast.edu/degrees-and-programs/utility-line" target="_blank">Northeast Community College in Norfolk</a>.

“I contemplated several professional fields to enter after high school,” Anderson wrote in his application essay. “I liked the idea of working outdoors, working with my hands, and operating some good-sized machinery and trucks. Each day, there is something new and challenging to learn. Most of all, I really like to idea of helping people and making sure their electricity will be working, which is vital to homes and businesses and in some cases means life and death.”

The Dawson PPD Utility Line Scholarship has been awarded to one student annually since 2001.

“We’re proud to support the education of our future lineworkers,” said Dawson PPD Manager of Operations Jeremy Kaiser. “Safety is key in this line of work, and education is the vessel that gets us there. It’s important to us as employers of lineworkers that our new hires come well prepared for the job.”

The North Platte Police Department will be taking part in the High Visibility Drug Impaired Driving Enforcement Mobilization from April 19th, 2024, through April 21st&nbsp;2024 .&nbsp; Additional officers will be on the street during these dates with an emphasis on removing drug and alcohol impaired drivers from the road. In 2021, Nebraska had thirty-five fatal crashes involving drivers under the influence of drugs.&nbsp; Law Enforcement asks you to report any possible impaired driving immediately.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: April 15th, 2024

Chappell, Neb. - A Union Pacific Intermodal train derailed Sunday afternoon in the small town of Chappell. The train derailment caused US Highway 30 in both directions to close from Lodgepole to US Highway 21 for about 2 hours. US Highway 30 is now open in both directions according to NE 511. The derailment blocked both tracks. The UP train was traveling along the Sidney Subdivision.

North Platte, Neb. - The Mid-Plains United Way is preparing to announce the 2024-2025 agency partners as the board is finalizing the last presentations from non-profits who submitted in an application. The new agencies will be announced sometime next week. As the campaign year ends, the united way is around $169,000 out of the $200,000 goal and making a last push effort. &nbsp;

Folks can now donate monthly if they like or May 8th is Giving Day which the united way will be a part of. As details become available, Mid-Plains United Way is preparing to host an event in June called human tractor pull. The event will run during NebraskaLand Days.&nbsp;

Officer Brian Smith and Officer Jesse Sutphin graduated in the 216th Graduation Class at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. Officers Smith and Sutphin have spent the last 16 weeks attending the training center to receive their law enforcement certification.

North Platte Police Department welcomes two new officers

North Platte, Neb. - Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) North Platte location is hosting the Knights BBQ Cookoff on April 20th on the NPCC South Campus pavilion. Public activities will be available during the cookoff which are set to kick off at 4:00pm, 6:00pm is when the meal will be served and awards for the competition will take place at 7:30. Rascal Martinez, an alum of MPCC will be performing live music around 6:00pm.&nbsp;

MPCC numbers for the competition are low and are looking for anywhere from 5-15 teams to join the competition. If numbers remain low, the event will no longer have a competition but those in attendance will still receive a meal. Work will occur from reference post 18.29 to reference post 43.98, east of Grant from the N-61 junction to the Perkins-Lincoln County line.

State maintenance forces will be performing the work, which includes the grading and repair of the sod shoulders with seeding and mulching to follow. Traffic will be maintained with pilot car and flaggers. The work is anticipated to take 20 days.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.

The PAC is hosting a concert this Saturday as welcome Job, Peter and Chuck for a one night performance. The trio, which used to sing together is getting back together for the evening with their concert at the PAC called "You Can't Make Old Friends".

APRIL 11, 2024 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.) —Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Utah man after locating nearly five pounds of suspected fentanyl pills during a traffic stop in North Platte. Sunday, April 7, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a trooper observed a Kia SUV traveling without headlights or taillights on Jeffers Street north of Interstate 80. During the traffic stop, the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity. 

A search of the vehicle revealed multiple bags containing thousands of suspected fentanyl pills. The total weight of the pills was nearly five pounds. Troopers also located a handgun in the vehicle. 

The driver, Tyrone Cash, 38, of Spanish Fork, Utah, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was lodged in Lincoln County.

Troopers Locate Thousands of Suspected Fentanyl Pills in North Platte

The nursing program at Mid-Plains Community College has been honored with an Outstanding Technical Program award from the&nbsp;American Technical Education Association.

The recognition came Thursday afternoon during the 61st ATEA National Conference in Wichita, Kan.

The selection was based on the nursing program’s many accomplishments in 2023. Those included a 100 percent pass rate by MPCC’s Associate Degree Nursing students on their NCLEX-RN exams and a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-PN exams by the Licensed Practical Nursing students.

The achievements marked the first time in Mid-Plains’ history that both ADN and LPN students had received a 100 percent pass rate in the same year.&nbsp;

“As an employer, I look for well-educated and skilled nurses, which is exactly what MPCC produces,” said Linda Baldwin, chief nursing officer for Banner Health Ogallala Community Hospital in her endorsement letter of the MPCC nursing program for the ATEA award. “The new grads from this program are prepared with skills and knowledge that I have noted is far greater than from other nursing programs. The 2023 pass rate of 100 percent is a testament to the educators and the level of expectation they have for their students.”

Another factor that played a part in the ATEA selection was MPCC’s expansion of its Health and Science Center to meet an increased demand for more nurses and health care professionals throughout the college’s 18-county service area and beyond.

The expansion provided more space to train those professionals and included, among other amenities, a large, dividable nursing classroom, group study rooms, an EMS lab outfitted with an ambulance simulator, three nursing simulation rooms and an immersion room for training students in a variety of virtual reality simulated environments.

“Without MPCC, we would lose nursing students to larger cities,” said Tina Pate, chief nursing officer for Great Plains Health, in her endorsement of MPCC for the ATEA award. “While many community colleges will tout the same benefit of training local people to perform local jobs, the piece that sets Mid-Plains apart from other community colleges is their dedicated faculty. The faculty advocate for students, ensuring students graduate with the skills needed to professionally contribute to the nursing workforce.”
