North Platte/Sandhills Post News Director Canon Rath caught up with 4-H'er Ezri Bay and 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator Caitlyn Jacobson about the 4-H Dog Skillathon category.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - 4-H is America's largest youth development program across the United States that helps learn skills that will last a lifetime. The age requirement for 4-H is the ages of 8-18. There are many different categories that 4-H'ers can participate in during their time in the program. A unique category is Dog Skillathon.&nbsp;

The Dog Skillathon contest is an opportunity that 4-H'rs can patriciate and test their knowledge of dogs. "It's a giant mess test and it's kind of interesting and so you walk in this big room and there's a whole bunch of tables with different activities," said 4-H'er Ezri Bay. "They hand you a test and you go to one of the tables and at each table there's like questions and photos that go with you questions and you have to answer those."&nbsp;

Professional barrel racer and motivational speaker Amberley Snyder will speak in Ogallala and North Platte in October.

Snyder is the subject of the Netflix movie, “Walk. Ride. Rodeo,” released in 2019. The biopic focuses on her journey leading up to and following a vehicle accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down.

The Mid-Plains Community College Student Life Department is organizing her visit to local communities.

The first presentation will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 23 at Ogallala High School, followed by a meet-and-greet with Snyder.

She will then speak at 1 p.m. Oct. 24 in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the North Platte Community College South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd, in North Platte. There is no meet-and-greet with the North Platte presentation.

Snyder fell in love with horses early in life and was barrel racing by the age of 7. She subsequently competed in junior and high school rodeos, winning multiple titles and awards.

Snyder qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo in pole bending in 2009, her senior year of high school, and won the National Little Britches Rodeo Association All-Around Cowgirl World Championship.

She was on top of the world at that point but came crashing down in January of 2010. Snyder was on her way to the Denver Stock Show and Rodeo, driving through Sinclair, Wyo., when she looked down at her map and crossed the centerline.

Snyder attempted to get back into her lane but overcorrected and rolled her truck. She was ejected and slammed into a fence post, breaking her back.

She underwent five hours of emergency surgery and was told by her doctor that she would never regain use of or feeling in her legs.

Four months later, she was back on her horse. Eighteen months after her accident, Snyder returned to competing in rodeo.

In 2015, she was voted the fan exemption contestant at the world’s richest one day rodeo, RFD-TV’s The American. Snyder competed with the best in the industry and was just 0.6 seconds short of the winning time. She received a standing ovation from over 40,000 fans in the AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

When “Walk. Ride. Rodeo.” came along, Snyder served as co-producer and her own stunt double. She also co-wrote the song, “Ride,” for the soundtrack and published a book by the same name, “Walk Ride Rodeo: A Story About Amberley Snyder.”

Today, Snyder continues to barrel race as part of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. She qualified for the Wilderness Circuit Finals in 2021 and 2022.

Snyder also travels the country sharing her story of triumph over tragedy and has become one of the most sought-after social influencers and motivational speakers in western sports.

Snyder’s presentations in Ogallala and North Platte are open to the public. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in both locations.

Tickets are required and nonrefundable. They must be purchased in advance as they will not be available at the events. Tickets are $10 each with the exception of those for MPCC students and employees who will be admitted free. FFA and other school organizations will also be admitted free with pre-registration.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2023 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) is investigating a death that occurred Friday at Swanson Reservoir State Rec Area in Hitchcock County.

Friday morning at approximately 9:30, Nebraska Game and Parks requested assistance from NSP at the scene of a missing person and boat. A Ford F-150 pickup and empty boat trailer had been located unoccupied at a boat ramp. Game and Parks officers were able to locate the boat, which was also unoccupied, out on the lake. Officers then used sonar equipment and identified what was suspected to be a body underwater near the boat ramp.

The Imperial Search and Rescue dive team was called in and recovered the body of the boat’s owner. The deceased has been identified as Michael Harrison, 68, of Goodland, Kansas.

Hitchcock County has requested that the Nebraska State Patrol investigate the death. Pending a scheduled autopsy, foul play in not suspected at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

The Hitchcock County Sheriff’s Office and Trenton Fire Department also assisted on the scene.

NSP Investigating Death at Swanson Reservoir

North Platte, Nebraska – The West Central District Health Department confirmed a positive test for West Nile Virus in a horse located in Lincoln County. In response to this finding, the West Central District Health Department advises that horse owners consult with their veterinarians in order to implement appropriate measures for protecting their horses against West Nile Virus.

 It is recommended that horses receive an annual vaccination for West Nile Virus, ideally administered in the spring or early summer prior to the onset of mosquitoes season.&nbsp; Horses that have not previously been vaccinated will require a booster to be fully protected. Owners can also practice good mosquito control, by removing standing water, cleaning water troughs regularly, using mosquito repellents, and bringing horses inside at dawn and dusk, which are peak mosquito feeding periods. 

Humans and horses cannot spread the disease to each other. WNV can be transmitted to humans and horses through mosquito bites. Humans should wear EPA-registered bug spray to protect against mosquitoes. There is no WNV vaccine for humans. The event is free will donation and their will also be free popcorn. The movie will be held on the west side of the Perkins County Fairgrounds. Last month, the chamber hosted their first ever movie night which featured Top Gun: Maverick.&nbsp;

The Ogallala Police Department participated in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled over campaign over the 2023 Labor Day Holiday time period to include 08/16/2023-09/04/2023. During this time 8 Law Enforcement Officers conducted a total of 44 hours of overtime in addition to their regular scheduled shifts.

 A total of 29 stops were conducted on grant overtime to include: Improper/defective vehicle lighting (13) , Speeding (2) , Disobey stop light (1) , Defective Signal Equipment (1), Truck Route Violations (5) , No Driver’s license (1) , failure to use designated lane (1), misuse of learner’s permit (1), plates not being clear or visible(1), no valid registration (1) Violate Stop or Yield (1) and DUI 0.15+ (1) 3rd offense.

Other Notable activity during this time frame is during officer’s regular scheduled shifts there was a total of an additional 69 traffic contacts to which this produced notable activity such as: DUI (3), Minor in Possession (2), Open Alcoholic Container (1) and Possession of Marijuana (1).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: September 11th, 2023

Robert Smith, of Culbertson, is the winner of the 2023 North Platte Community College raffle car - a 1972 Pontiac Le Mans Sport.

His ticket was drawn during the annual Colonel Cody’s Cruise Show and Shine in Memorial Park in North Platte on Saturday. Smith was not present for the announcement but was notified by phone of his win.

The Le Mans is the 18th raffle vehicle produced by the college’s Transportation Division. It was restored by students in the Automotive Technology and Auto Body Technology programs.

A total of 5,959 tickets were sold this year. Proceeds will go toward scholarships for students in the college’s transportation programs and to help offset the cost of producing the next raffle car project.

   Culbertson man wins NPCC raffle car

(North Platte, Nebraska) – The second annual National Avocado Launching&nbsp; Championship came to a close this afternoon after a day filled with comradery, competition, and of&nbsp; course, flying avocados.&nbsp;

This unique sporting event, at the Wild West Arena in North Platte, consisted of a Friday night event for&nbsp; the contestants. They were given the opportunity to test out their launching mechanisms one last time&nbsp; and get a feel for where the competition would be taking place. The beer garden was open, and the&nbsp; competition was avocontrol (pun intended)! After six hours of test launches the evening ended and the&nbsp; anticipation of Saturday morning was high.&nbsp;

The National Avocado Launching Championship began at 10:20am on Saturday with 22 teams&nbsp; registered. Contestants played through two rounds of pool play, followed by a 16-team single&nbsp; elimination bracket. The launching mechanisms ranged from trebuchets to water balloon launchers,&nbsp; spring-loaded devices to mounted crossbow-like contraptions, and more. The dedication and creativity&nbsp; the teams brought to the competition was incredible. Spectators not only cheered on the teams, but&nbsp; also enjoyed playing cornhole themselves and decorating avocados as a fundraiser for the North Platte&nbsp; Area Children’s Museum. After hours of competition, avocado mascot races, and trips to the&nbsp; concessions provided by Bunkhouse Creations, as well as to the bar hosted by NEBRASKAland Days, the&nbsp; 2023 National Avocado Launching champion was declared!&nbsp;

Team Ramrod of North Platte came in first place. Team captain Terry Dressel and his teammate were&nbsp; awarded $3,500 and ultimate glory. The runner up was Let’s Get Smashed of Grand Island. Team captain&nbsp; Kim Penrose and her teammates were the proud winners of $2,000. The other two teams to win prize&nbsp; money were Front Headlock of North Platte and Brown Sugar of North Platte. Both teams were awarded&nbsp; $750. There was also a costume contest for the contestants and Nick Tomaso of Omaha won $100 with his avocado costume.&nbsp;

(North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin September 11 on US-83, from reference post 148+00 to reference post 148+50, according to the Nebraska Department of&nbsp; Transportation.&nbsp;

M.E. Collins Contracting Company, Inc. of Wahoo is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge joint repairs on the Thedford Viaduct. Traffic will be maintained with lane closures and temporary traffic signals. A 14-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is October 2023.&nbsp;

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.&nbsp;

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones&nbsp; down.&nbsp;

Ogallala Public Schools will be hosting a Community Budget Worksession on Monday, September 11th at 6:00 PM at the High School Performing Arts Center for anyone interested in learning more about the 2023-2024 school budget.&nbsp;

The proposed tax request will&nbsp;lower the levy by $0.11.This is possible because the Nebraska State Legislature passed a school funding package that has updated how school funding is allocated for the 2023-2024 school year. Ogallala Public Schools is set to receive $1,371,322 in State Foundation Aid. With this foundation aid, Ogallala Public Schools was able to utilize the aid and reduce the levy by $0.11 and decrease our total tax asking by $304,682.

Ogallala Public Schools hosting a Community Budget Work Session on Monday

Feeding Nebraska communities and feeding the world with climate challenges facing agriculture producers was the underlying topic at this year’s annual Water and Crops Field Day at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), West Central Research Extension and Education Center (WCREEC) in North Platte.&nbsp;

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been working with ag producers for decades on farming practices and, in 2022, began Climate-Smart Agriculture. USDA set three main goals: sustainably increasing productivity and income, increasing adaptation, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Many of our producers hear about it (Climate-Smart practices) but don’t know how quickly it’s growing,” said Kelly Bruns, director of the UNL West Central Research and Extension Center.&nbsp;

The field day featured a panel on Climate Smart Practices, and one of the speakers was Grant Keenan, director of cattle management at Walmart.&nbsp;

“Walmart has a huge commitment to not only the United States but to the world to help promote sustainable practices. To ensure nature is here for our kids and our grandkids, right, and we’re able to continue producing that food fiber and shelter that takes care of the world population,” Keenan said.&nbsp;

Walmart has invested in Sustainable Beef LLC, a $325 million beef processing facility in North Platte. It will be served by five feed yards in Nebraska, another four in Kansas, and one in Oklahoma in a 100-mile radius. The facility and feed yards are only a part of the company's Prime Pursuit Supply Chain. Walmart will be able to trace the beef back to its ranches of origin and aid them in regenerative practices, navigating funding and technical assistance.

In order for cattle to be part of the Prime Pursuit Supply chain, they need to be identified and tracked throughout their life. While the cattle are finished in the feed yards, most are grazed on ranges, cornstalks, and cover crops before being moved into area feedlots.&nbsp;

“At first, we really wanted to make sure that we controlled erosion. We didn’t want to have that wind blowing our high-dollar Nebraska dirt around. In a short period of time, we figured out, hey, these cattle can graze this, and there’s a way to pay for this (cover crops) in some years,” said John Schroeder, manager at Darr Feedlot in Cozad.

Schroeder has developed different cover crop cocktails with oats, wheat, turnips, radishes, and canola. They also used manure to put back some phosphorus and potassium. He said the traditional corn, soybean, and alfalfa rotations are working well but stressed every area is different.&nbsp;

Cover crops are not just for cattle to graze. In some areas, they can also be a short-season cash crop. Sara Carlson, with Practical Farmers of Iowa, said regenerative agriculture has a lot of definitions.

“Our vision (of regenerative farming) is to build resilience back into farms and then communities. What we really need is more people in our communities, and resilient farms can do this,” she said.&nbsp;

Like others on the Climate Smart panel, Practical Farmers of Iowa also work with the farmers and livestock producers to get funding from USDA programs.&nbsp;

North Platte Post News Director Canon Rath caught up with Father Jonathon Sorenson and Jory Torress about the upcoming St. Patrick's Church Block Party Weekend as the event is this Saturday and Sunday.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The St. Patricks Church in North Platte is hosting a Block Party this Saturday and Sunday at the church which is located at&nbsp;415 N Chestnut St in North Platte. The event, which is a rebranding of the BBQ, will have an adult setting for Saturday while Sunday is the family friendly day.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saturday's event, which is set up for adults, will be a relaxed evening while folks can enjoy adult beverages and a nacho bar to enjoy. "We are going to have a beer garden, that will be a cash beer garden and a free will donation nacho bar," said Jory Torress. "We really just want to get everybody together and show the community that you can go to church and enjoy a drink responsibly with your parishioners and community."&nbsp;

Sunday will be geared towards the family friendly atmosphere and have plenty for everyone of all ages to enjoy Sunday's event. "On Sunday, we felt strongly having different events for all ages," said Torress. "It's hard to do creating events for all ages because high schoolers have different interest than toddlers." High schoolers will also be playing the role of helping run some of the events during Sunday's family day.&nbsp;
