August 9, 2023 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;– The Nebraska Diplomats hosted its annual awards banquet on Tuesday evening at the Younes Conference Center North in Kearney.

During the banquet, Governor Jim Pillen, Nebraska Diplomats President Desiree Wineland, and Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director Sherry Vinton helped present the following awards:

Business of the Year&nbsp;– Preferred Popcorn, Chapman

In 2018 Preferred Popcorn expanded their Chapman facility into a state-of-the-art popcorn processing plant with a $6.5 million expansion. With an investment of $2 million in 2022, the company opened Preferred Snacks in Waco to provide quality, ready-to-eat flavored popcorn and snacks. The venture in Waco started with seven employees and has grown to 17 as of the summer of 2023. It is poised to have 25 employees by the end of this year. In December 2022, in an effort to remain viable well into the future, Preferred Popcorn and Snacks was purchased by Performance Food Group, a Fortune 500 company.

Since its beginning in 1932, the primary focus of Gerkin Windows and Doors has been to manufacture energy-saving window and door products. The business has established itself as an innovator in the design and manufacturing capability of insulated windows and doors. Its window and door products are sold throughout North America by professional building material distributors and dealers. Gerkin Windows and Doors recently invested $14 million to make a significant expansion, adding 40 jobs. The company plans to hire 30+ additional employees as it continues to grow.

North Platte is enjoying rapid economic growth, with approximately $2 billion in new projects underway. North Platte wrapped up 2022 with record retail sales and lodging revenues. 2023 is already the city’s largest construction year on record, as measured by the value of building permits.

In 2006, Mark started Graepel North America in Omaha. It began as a sales office and has grown into a successful manufacturing business under his leadership. Graepel now operates a 85,000-square-foot plant on seven acres in the Hilltop Industrial Park in southwest Omaha.&nbsp;Since arriving in Omaha from Germany, Mark has immersed himself in Nebraska life. He has joined the Millard Rotary Club, the German American Chamber of the Midwest, and the Nebraska Diplomats. As an active Diplomat, and current Nebraska Diplomats board member, Mark is always available to host companies, help with trade missions, and promote Nebraska as a great place to work and live. He and his wife, Heike, have three sons and enjoy all that Nebraska has to offer.

Ambassador Plenipotentiary&nbsp;– Terry McMullen, President of AIT Worldwide

The Ambassador Plenipotentiary award is given to someone whose contributions to Nebraska extend beyond in-state influence. Throughout Terry’s career as a Nebraska Diplomat, he has been quick to mentor young Nebraskans and recruit them to become Diplomats. He is always willing to help the Diplomats and the Nebraska Department of Economic Development with recruitment and the development of international relationships. He has hosted dinners and international gatherings, organized golf outings, and shipped items overseas to promote Nebraska, and he is an effective advocate of the state.

Governor’s Excellence in Agriculture Entrepreneurship Award&nbsp;– Sentinel Fertigation, Lincoln

Sentinel Fertigation uses satellite imagery to monitor corn crops and recommends fertilizer application rates based on real-time data. Sentinel’s founder and CEO, Jackson Stansell, launched the company in 2021 as the fruit of his Master’s thesis research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Sentinel Fertigation has expanded to have six full-time staff and three interns, and is actively helping producers in four states. It has immediate plans to expand into five more states and into international markets. In 2022, its first commercial year, Sentinel Fertigation was able to improve nitrogen fertilizer efficiency by 23%, saving farmers 42 pounds of nitrogen per acre, resulting in $40/acre savings. Additionally, using less nitrogen to produce the same yield ultimately reduces fertilizer run-off and/or permeation into groundwater.

Stansell’s graduate research was supported by the Nebraska Corn Board, the Daugherty Water for Food Institute, and the Central Platte Natural Resources District. It is a great example of how local entities are fostering entrepreneurship to benefit farmers in Nebraska.

 <li>Sustainable Beef, a rancher-owned beef processing plant, is currently under construction. It is expected to create 875 direct and 1,040 indirect jobs in North Platte. In August 2022, Sustainable Beef announced a major partnership agreement with Walmart.</li><li>Leaders in North Platte have played a key role in the development of an&nbsp;Industrial Rail Park&nbsp;near Hershey. Over time, the 300-acre park is projected to have a $1.8 billion impact and create up to 1,000 jobs.&nbsp; In October 2022, the North Platte Area Chamber and Development Corporation, in partnership with Lincoln County, purchased a 53,000 square foot production facility from Greenbrier Rail Services that will have an initial spur to the Union Pacific mainline. The Nebraska Department of Economic Development certified the rail park as an Inland Port Authority in February 2023.&nbsp;</li><li>Rev Development is redeveloping North Platte’s mall into a mixed-use commercial and housing development known as&nbsp;District 177. The $85 million project involves construction of numerous retail spaces, along with 96 apartment units.&nbsp;</li><li>North Platte has successfully completed a $4 million, four-year project to transform its historic downtown into the newly renovated&nbsp;Canteen District.</li><li>The National Guard has constructed a $3 million&nbsp;readiness center and new guard unit facility&nbsp;at the North Platte airport.</li><li>North Platte has engaged in new housing development through its successful&nbsp;“Shot in the Arm” housing initiative. The North Platte Area Chamber and Development Corp. put together the incentive program, which has assisted the construction of 500 new housing units since 2015.</li><li>Great Plains Health&nbsp;has grown to 1,200 employees and is currently constructing a stand-alone, $30 million Primary Care Center. North Platte wins Community of the Year at Nebraska Diplomats Banquet

The City of North Platte’s contractor Western Engineering will begin resurfacing operation, which&nbsp; includes roto-milling the surface and laying asphalt, on Friday August 11th.&nbsp;

The sequence of areas to be overlayed are as follow:

1. Poplar Street from 12th Street to Cody Park.&nbsp; 2. 9th Street from Cottonwood Street to Poplar Street.&nbsp; 3. 8th Street from Poplar Street to Roosevelt Avenue.&nbsp; 4. Poplar Street from Philip Avenue to Francis Street.&nbsp; 5. Cottonwood Street from Philip Avenue to Francis Street.&nbsp; 6. Easy Street from Cottonwood Street west.&nbsp;

As part of the resurfacing project all vehicles and trailers will have to be removed until the milling and placement operations are completed. There will be some short periods of time that driveways will not be accessible as these operations pass the driveways. We apologize for any inconvenience&nbsp; that this may pose and will work as quickly as possible to minimize the inconvenience.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE – August 8, 2023 – Due to high sales, officials in the states participating in the Mega Millions® Lotto game have increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Tuesday, August 8 drawing to $1.58 billion or $783.3 million with the cash option selected. Nebraska Extension is providing in-field training opportunities during the Nebraska Corn and Soybean Clinics. The training is scheduled for 2 locations – Mead and North Platte.&nbsp; Learn about research-based recommendations for improving yield and profit potential. See a “growing season” all in one place - the training includes hands-on interaction and field demos.

Aaron Nygren, Nebraska Extension water and cropping systems educator at the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension &amp; Education Center, says “We look forward to better serving Nebraska corn and soybean farmers with these clinics and hope that you will join us to have a hands on discussion with Nebraska Extension specialists and educators about topics important to your operation.”

The Tuesday, Aug. 29 training is at the University of Nebraska West Central Research, Extension &amp; Education Center, 402 West State Farm Road, North Platte, Nebraska and Thursday, Aug. 31 is at the University of Nebraska Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension &amp; Education Center (near Mead), 1071 County Road G, Ithaca, Nebraska.&nbsp;

The clinics will differ in content due to variables at each location.&nbsp; Nicolas Cafaro, assistant professor and cropping systems specialist in agronomy and horticulture at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center, says “Nebraska has diversity of soil, weather conditions, and cropping systems. That means that corn and soybean management is also different across Nebraska. We want to bring better access to the clinics for Nebraskans.”

Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. Training is from 9:30 a.m. - 3:20 p.m.

Focusing on both corn and soybeans will provide a well-rounded educational experience.&nbsp; Cafaro says, “The management of one crop could influence the other crop in the following year and sometimes the same year (such as herbicide drift), so a systems approach is important.”

Topics include: Growth Stage and Crop Physiology: Corn and Soybean Planting-R1; Nutrient management: N, P, IDC; Insect and Weed Management; Weed Management; Growth Stage and Crop Physiology Corn and Soybean R1-harvest; Irrigation; and Plant Pathology.

4.5 CCA credits have been applied for and are pending.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Sutherland Chamber of Commerce Makers Market Craft and Vendor Fair will be held August 27th in downtown Sutherland. This is the third year of the event with my returning vendors. The event is from 10am - 3pm central time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The event will welcome many different vendors to the show and also still accepting registrations. "Right now we have right around 50 vendors, a few keep trickling in and we are accepting more but it will be just a great time," said Muriel Clark. "We have everything from home decor, to clothing, to leather goods, and everything in between."&nbsp;

The NCTA Heifer Link initiative was launched at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in January 2015 as an integral part of the Ownership Advantage Program. With Heifer Link's introduction, students are given a unique chance to receive a bred heifer during their fourth semester.

This year, Hadley Sayer of Wallace took advantage of this opportunity to support his goal of expanding his operation raising purebred show cattle in Nebraska.

Hadley shared,&nbsp;"Over the past two years, NCTA has allowed me to develop useful connections that I will utilize throughout my future endeavors. The Heifer Link Program through NCTA has provided me with a great addition to my herd. I am truly grateful for this opportunity, and all the others, that the college has provided me with."

Under the guidance of experienced faculty members, the Heifer Link program aims to equip students with hands-on knowledge and skills crucial for successful careers in animal agriculture. Students participating in the program gain valuable experience in livestock management, animal husbandry, and overall farm operations.

Apart from the day-to-day responsibilities, students also participate in projects related to livestock production, nutrition, and genetics. These projects provide an additional avenue for students to delve deeper into the field of animal agriculture and contribute to advancements in the industry. They also gain hands-on experience in reproductive management, including artificial insemination and pregnancy diagnosis.

"NCTA and its partners have been committed to empowering students starting out in the livestock industry through the Ownership Advantage Program," says Dr. Larry Gossen, dean of NCTA. "By introducing the Heifer Link component, where students take ownership of a donated heifer during their academic journey and leave the NCTA campus with a bred heifer, we aim to provide our next generation with a remarkable head start on building their own herds."

Beyond the campus, Aggie students have the unique opportunity to work on the ranch crew to care for our expanding herd at our 2,147-acre Leu Ranch, at our adjacent campus cattle facilities, and participate in internships with cattle ranches and feedlots, gaining invaluable hands-on experience.

Additionally, the program provides an excellent platform for networking with industry producers and engaging in discussions on pressing industry issues. Dean Gossen affirms that this program not only equips students with practical skills but also fosters a deep understanding of the cattle industry, preparing them to excel in their future careers.

Fudge joined the Board of Directors for the 2005 Celebration, then transitioned to the role of Executive Director a few months after his final Board year in 2011. 2024 will mark his 20th Celebration with the organization. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this organization,” said Fudge. “I don’t know that I could have ever dreamed that my time here would be so rewarding. We’ve made lifelong friends with people we may have never had the opportunity to meet without this place.” &nbsp;

The organization has perhaps never been stronger. Facilities have been upgraded to keep pace with the demands of the 21st century, while more projects to upgrade older structures are in the planning phases. “The organization has done a wonderful job positioning itself for the next 20 years,” said recently retired Buffalo Bill Rodeo Committee Chairman Jack Morris. “The Board and the Committee’s have come together to make sure everyone is on the same page working towards putting the best product we can.” &nbsp;

Fudge to Retire from NEBRASKAland DAYS

The OVFD was paged for a vehicle fire in the county. Agency responded with command, engine, and tender. MA called from Brule immediately. On arrival, found van style semi trailer actively burning from the rear axles and already extended to freight. 

Extinguishment was hampered by high volume of traffic on roadway and access into trailer due to the size and volume of the freight. Heavy equipment was requested from NDOR and roadway shut down request made. KCSO and OPD, with NDOR staff, diverted traffic for approximately 4 hours. 

KLFD was called for extra tenders and Big Springs FD for pack personnel to assist with salvage and overhaul. Ogallala Volunteer EMS provided rehab/standby at scene.  Due to the professionalism and unparalleled cooperation between local agencies, no secondary accidents or injuries occurred. 

Fire cause determined to be mechanical in nature from faulty brake or wheel bearing on trailer. Trailer damaged beyond repair. Contents damaged by fire and smoke. Thanks to all agencies involved.&nbsp;&nbsp;

(August 7, 2023) Lexington, Neb. – Dawson Public Power District announced its 2022 financial performance review, highlighting that $8 million was invested into its distribution system without issuing new debt.

The publicly-owned electric utility grew its cash reserves by $8.5 million, reduced long-term debt by $4.4 million and invested $8 million into its distribution system. The District remains dedicated to providing safe, reliable and affordable energy to its valued customers, and its current strong financial position reinforces its ability to fulfill these commitments well into the future.

Dawson PPD strengthened its cash reserves through a combination of strong irrigation sales, a power cost adjustment from its wholesale provider, Nebraska Public Power District, and management of operating expenses. A rate stabilization fund, established in 2020, also assists in keeping rates as low as possible despite the impact of inflation or any other unforeseen circumstances.

By refinancing three bonds in 2020 to capitalize on low interest rates, paying down principal since that time, and using current operating revenue to fund improvements, Dawson PPD’s total interest expense is down 17 percent over the past two years.

Over the past decade, the company has invested $102 million into its infrastructure. Notably, in 2021 and 2022, Dawson PPD allocated $5.6 million and $8 million, respectively, to bolster its electrical grid. These recent investments were made possible without the need for new debt issuance, thanks to the company's strong financial position.

Dawson PPD experienced exceptional success in irrigation sales, with a 30 percent increase in the sale of 216 million irrigation kilowatt hours compared to 2021. The District’s total revenue in 2022 was $70.9 million, or 632.1 million kilowatt hours across all rate classes.

LINCOLN — The proposed merger between two central Nebraska utility districts has been officially proclaimed dead, though a spat broke out over a comment made about “frontier justice” if the merger had proceeded.

Dave Rowe, the president of the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District, said that a vote a week ago by Central’s board had ended pursuit of a merger with Dawson Public Power “unless and until there is a change in circumstances.”

But Rowe added that he condemned a comment made at the July 28 meeting that directors who voted to approve the merger would face “frontier justice.” That is a term that implies a lynching or judgment by vigilantes.

“Threats to the livelihood of the general public and businesses in the area, as well as directors who might be in favor of the merger are not acceptable and is nothing more than extortion, plain and simple,” he stated, in a press release Thursday.

On Friday, a leader of the irrigators’ group that opposed the merger called for peace going forward.

“We are all neighbors and want to be friends when this is all over,” said Gary Robison of Citizens Opposed to the Merger.

&nbsp;“We have encouraged peaceful resolution of this process from the beginning despite the challenges imposed upon us. We look forward to working with Central to help solve the challenges facing the district,” Robison said in a statement.

A week ago, before an overflow crowd, the Central board of directors&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/planned-merger-of-central-nebraska-power-districts-short-circuited-by-friday-vote/">voted 7-5 to approve a charter amendment and proceed</a>&nbsp;with the merger with Dawson, but an eight-vote super majority was required.

The Central and Dawson boards&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/central-nebraska-utilities-say-merger-would-be-helpful-but-not-essential-to-massive-new-fertilizer-plant/">had promoted the merger</a>&nbsp;as the perfect marriage of a district that generated power (Central) with one that sold power to retail customers (Dawson). They said it would save money and enhance economic development.

The idea had advanced all the way to a state power board in April before being&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/proposed-merger-of-central-nebraska-utility-districts-headed-for-a-do-over/">sent back due to a technicality.</a>

Opposition seemed to increase after the initial rejection by the Nebraska Power Review Board, with some county boards and economic development agencies south of the Platte River passing resolutions of opposition.

The Citizens group, which formed to block the merger, argued that irrigators would have less control over water deliveries in the new, merged board of directors, and that there were no benefits to Central patrons.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - It's the last day of the 2023 Rail Days festival and the model train show is going on at the D&amp;N Event Center. The event runs from 9am - 3pm. There will be a pancake feed from 9am to 11am. After the model train show ends, there will be an ice cream social at the event center. Admission to the train show is $5 for adults, Youth (6-12) is $1, Kids 5 and under are free, and NPRD VIP get in for free.
