NORTON COUNTY —Three children were injured in a 4 vehicle accident just after 5p.m. Wednesday in Norton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Peterbilt semi driven by Jerry D Richard, 59, Scott City, was westbound on Kansas 383 six miles west of U.S. 183.

The semi struck the left rear of a 2016 Dodge Ram, a marked sheriff's department vehicle parked on the north edge of the highway facing west with emergency lights activated. Phillips County Sheriff's Deputy John Miner had stopped to assist a disabled motorist&nbsp; near West 800 Road. 

The impact pushed the Dodge Ram sheriff's vehicle into the north ditch. 

The semi then struck a trailer that was parked in front of the deputy's vehicle. The Peterbilt spilled fuel and caught fire as it continued westbound past a 1989 Dodge Ram and a 2015 Ram 1500 also parked on the north edge of the highway.

The 1989 Ram, the camper connected to it and the 2015 Ram also caught fire due to the amount of fuel spilled by the semi.

 Three front seat occupants of Ram 1500 were safely able to exit the vehicle while sheriff's deputy Miner was able to safely remove 2 occupants from the back seat of Ram 1500&nbsp; before they were injured by the fire.

EMS transported Ella Rae, 4; Emric Wilkens, 2 and Ryatt Wilkens, all from Wisconsin, to the Phillips County Hospital.

Deputy Miner suffered minor burns when he rescued the two children.  He was transported to Phillips County Hospital and is being referred to another facility for treatment of his injuries, according to the Phillips County Sheriff's Office.

There were no others injured, according to the KHP.

139 new positive cases of COVID reported in WCDHD jurisdiction

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska voters set a turnout record in the 2020 general election, with nearly 74% of eligible voters casting a ballot, the state's top election official said Wednesday.

Secretary of State Bob Evnen said voters beat the previous record from the 2016 general election by about 68,000 votes. Election officials statewide counted an official total of 936,106.

Evnen said 34 counties had a turnout of more than 80%, and four counties had a turnout of 88%. He said the record will likely increase once counties process an additional 20,000 to 25,000 ballots and provisional ballots that were submitted on Tuesday.

Early in-person and mail-in voting accounted for 436,269 of the total ballots cast, which was more than 90% of the total ballots requested. Evnen said 51,932 people voted early at their county election commissioner's office.

Evnen, a conservative Republican, said he would like to see more scrutiny placed on early balloting in the future. Any change in state law would have to go through Nebraska lawmakers, who have typically erred on the side of either expanding voting access or preserving the status quo.

Evnen argued that more than 25,000 ballots sent to voters at their request were never returned.

"What happened to those ballots? We don't know," he said. "Twenty-five thousand ballots is not an insignificant number."

Nebraska has 1,267,366 registered voters.

Officials will notify anyone who had close contact with the ill staffers, who are isolating themselves at home.

The department said it has now had 210 staff members diagnosed with COVID-19. Of that total, 174 people have recovered.

Statewide, 283 inmates had tested positive for the coronavirus as of Sunday and two deaths have been linked to the virus. Officials said 241 of the inmates who had COVID-19 have recovered from the illness.

Voters in Nebraska made their pick for president while holding mixed views about the country's direction, according to an expansive AP survey of the American electorate.

The race between President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden concluded Tuesday as the nation remains in the throes of a global public health crisis and mired in the economic downturn it brought on. AP VoteCast found that 49% of Nebraska voters said the U.S. is on the right track and 50% of voters said it is headed in the wrong direction.

Here's a snapshot of who voted and what matters to them, based on preliminary results from AP VoteCast, a nationwide survey of about 133,000 voters and nonvoters -- including 1,445 voters and 219 nonvoters in Nebraska --&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ap.org/en-us/topics/politics/elections/ap-votecast/methodology-2020-ge" target="_blank">conducted for The Associated Press by NORC at the University of Chicago</a>.

In the race for president, Voters under 45 were divided between Trump and Biden while Trump led Biden among older voters.

Voters without a college degree were more likely to prefer Trump but college-educated voters were divided between Trump and Biden.

Voters in cities were more likely to back Biden but both suburban voters and voters in small towns and rural areas were more likely to prefer Trump.

In the race for U.S. Senate, Both voters under 45 and older voters were more likely to back Ben Sasse over Chris Janicek.

Both voters without a college degree and college-educated voters were more likely to favor Sasse over Janicek.

Both suburban voters and voters in small towns and rural areas were more likely to back Sasse while voters in cities were split between Sasse and Janicek.

The coronavirus pandemic has spread through the U.S. for roughly eight months, killing more than 230,000 Americans. Overall, 20% of voters said the virus in the U.S. is completely or mostly under control, and 36% said it's somewhat under control. Forty-three percent of voters think the coronavirus is not at all under control in this country.

The coronavirus pandemic and the economy were top of mind for many voters in Nebraska. Thirty-four percent said the coronavirus pandemic is the most important issue facing the country today. Thirty-two percent named the economy.

Ten percent named health care, 7% named racism and 4% named law enforcement.

Voters were more positive than negative in their assessments of the nation's economy. Overall, 58% described economic conditions in the U.S. as excellent or good, and 42% called them not so good or poor.

Among registered voters who chose not to cast a ballot in Nebraska, 22% said that was because they don't like politics generally, 19% said they don't know enough about the candidates' positions and 14% said their vote doesn't matter.

In Nebraska, 62% of nonvoters were younger than 45 and 71% did not have a college degree.

 Nebraska voters mixed on state of nation

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) recovered an abducted child after receiving a report of an assault and kidnapping from Sedgwick County, Colorado.

At approximately 6:15 p.m. CT Tuesday, NSP received information regarding an assault and kidnapping that had occurred in Sedgwick County. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office provided information that the suspect had assaulted a woman, then drove off in the woman’s vehicle with her child still in the vehicle. The suspect was believed to be traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 in Nebraska.&nbsp;

At approximately 7:00 p.m. CT, troopers were able to locate the vehicle, a Mazda 3, at I-80 mile marker 177, near North Platte. Troopers and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies performed a traffic stop on the vehicle and took the suspect into custody without incident. The child was located inside the vehicle and was unharmed.

The driver, George Williamson, 31, of North Platte, was arrested on warrants for kidnapping and assault from Sedgwick County, Colorado, as well as a warrant for failure to appear from Dawson County, Nebraska. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail. The child was reunited with family.

The rate of new cases in Nebraska ranked seventh-highest among the states. The rate of new cases per 100,000 Nebraska residents over the past two weeks registered 759.41 on Tuesday, according to an Associated Press analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska increased over the past two weeks from 854 new cases per day on Oct. 20 to 1,160.14 new cases per day on Tuesday.

LINCOLN, Neb. – Excitement is building for Nebraska’s firearm deer season, which is Nov. 14-22.

This season, hunters can expect good deer and deer populations. Buck age structure is at or near all-time highs, with 50 percent of mule deer and 40 percent of whitetails aged 3 or older during the 2019 firearm season. Many units have increased or expanded antlerless opportunities since both whitetail and mule deer populations are above or near desired levels in those units.

Nebraska was one of several states taking on ballot measures in a climate of racial strife this election. Nebraska's proposal eliminates a passage in the state constitution, dating from the 19th century, that allows slavery as punishment for a crime. There was no organized opposition to the measure, which advanced through the Legislature this year on a unanimous vote.

One other state - Utah - is considering a nearly identical measure.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday won deeply conservative Nebraska, which hasn't seen its statewide popular vote go to a Democrat since Lyndon B. Johnson carried the state in 1964. But that doesn't mean Trump is guaranteed all five of the state's electoral votes.

Democratic challenger Joe Biden is hoping to peel off at least one electoral vote in Nebraska - one of only two states that allows its electoral votes to be split.

The former vice president has a chance of winning in the state's 2nd Congressional District, which encompasses Omaha and several suburbs. Polling has shown a competitive race between Biden and Trump in the district, while the president is far ahead statewide.

Since adopting the system in 1991, Nebraska has split its electoral votes only once: In 2008, when Democrat Barack Obama won the 2nd District on his way to the presidency.

Trump supporters who spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday tended to cite his performance in his first term for their decision.

"I went ahead and voted for Donald Trump because I believe he is honest, and he gets things done and he delivers," said Lisa Schneider, a 59-year-old homemaker in Omaha. "And most of all, he loves our country."

Christine Reisser, 56, is a retired teacher in Omaha who said she supported Trump because she wants him to continue doing what he has been doing for the past four years.

"He's going to keep our way of life intact," Reisser said.

Republican Sen. Ben Sasse easily won a second term in a race marked by controversy surrounding Democrat Chris Janicek, an Omaha cupcake bakery owner. Janicek won the Democratic primary in May, but then came under fire from his own party for sending sexually explicit texts about a female campaign worker in a group text message.

The Nebraska Democratic Party spent months trying unsuccessfully to force Janicek out of the race, and the party eventually endorsed longtime party activist Preston Love Jr. as a write-in candidate.

In the 1st District, Republican Rep. Jeff Fortenberry managed to fend off Democratic challenger Kate Bolz in one of the closest races he's faced in the 15 years he's held the seat. Republican Rep. Adrian Smith also won re-election to an eighth term representing the state's rural, deeply red 3rd District, handily defeating Democratic challenger Mark Elworth Jr.

As our city, state and nation continue to cautiously emerge from the coronavirus pandemic, Downtown North Platte will be a little brighter as the Fox Theatre lights their sign and movies return to the big screen at the historic theatre.

According to the North Platte Community Playhouse, movies will kick-off this weekend, with movies planned through December at this point.

Physical distancing will be practiced and masks will be required for those attending movies.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Concessions will be served.

Polls will be open until 8 p.m., except for far western parts of the state, where voting began and will end an hour earlier.

Conservative Nebraska is typically one of the safest locks for Republican presidential nominees, who have not lost the statewide popular vote since Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson carried it in 1964.

But while this year's statewide vote will no doubt go to Trump, former Vice President Joe Biden has a chance of winning in the state's 2nd Congressional District, meaning one of Nebraska's five Electoral College votes could go to the Democrat.

Nebraska is one of two states - the other is Maine - that allows electoral votes to be split. Nebraska's 2nd District encompasses Omaha and its suburbs as well as Offutt Air Force Base to the south. Polling shows a competitive race between Biden and Trump in the district, while the president is far ahead statewide.

Turnout heavy but manageable at Nebraska polling places

If you plan on doing some shopping at Walmart in North Platte, you may have to wait a couple of days.

The Post has confirmed that the North Platte Walmart location will be closing at 2:00 p.m. today and is expected to be closed for two days for cleaning after what was referred to by management as a "COVID-19 outbreak" within the community. Walmart officials say they are expecting to reopen at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 5.

The store will be deep cleaned and will proceed with current business operations and precautions upon reopening.&nbsp;

Walmart provided the Post with the following statement from the corporate level:

“As an essential business and a member of the North Platte community, we understand the role we play in providing our customers with food, medicine and other essential items, especially at this time. We also understand this community has been hit especially hard by COVID-19.

Health officials are working to curb the impact of this pandemic, and we want to be a part of the solution. In support of this effort,&nbsp;we have chosen to temporarily close our North Platte Supercenter location at&nbsp;1401 S. Dewey St. today&nbsp;at 2 p.m. as part of a company-initiated program.&nbsp;This will allow extra time for a third-party specialist to further sanitize the store and will also give our associates additional time to restock shelves and prepare the store to once again serve the community. We plan to reopen the store to customers at 7 a.m. on Thursday, November 5.

Everything we’re doing is for the well-being of our associates and customers, and in consideration of guidance by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and health experts. When the store reopens Sunday, we will continue to conduct associate health screens and temperature checks, and all associates will be provided with facemasks and gloves.

These protocols are in addition to the extensive measures we’ve put in place during the pandemic to help protect our associates and customers, including installing sneeze guards at registers, placing social distancing signage throughout the store and enacting an emergency leave policy for associates who are unable or uncomfortable coming to work. The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) has made multiple arrests in crime that involved multiple felony offenses, including burglary and kidnapping.

According to BCSO, at approximately 2:23 a.m., on November 3, dispatchers received a 911
report of a disturbance at 450 Main St, in Odessa.&nbsp; 

Authorities say a 61-year-old male
reported that armed men had entered his residence and got into an altercation with him. The men then departed the residence traveling eastbound on
Highway 30.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upon
arrival, deputies contacted the homeowner, and an acquaintance, a
28-year-old female.&nbsp; 

The female reported that while at her residence in
northeast Kearney, three masked men, armed with handguns, forced
entry and confronted her and a 43-year-old male&nbsp;about a debt she
owed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The
female told deputies she departed her residence with the men to go get money to pay the
debt. She said they traveled to Odessa, where they gained entry into the
residence at 450 Main St.&nbsp; 

The woman told deputies that, when confronted by the resident, the
three men departed.&nbsp; 

A short time later, a BCSO deputy located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle in west
Kearney, and with the assistance of officers of the Kearney Police
Department and University of Nebraska at Kearney Police initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, and
contacted three men.&nbsp; 

BCSO says following the traffic stop, all three men
were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, burglary,
trespassing,&nbsp;terroristic threats, use of a firearm to commit a
felony, possession of stolen firearms, possession of a concealed
firearm and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The
men arrested were identified as Ashton
B Holland, 28, of Austin, Texas, Randy
L Judd, 21, of Kearney and Billy J. Fletcher, 34, of Holdrege.
