OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Business leaders are optimistic the economy will begin to recover later this year in a nine-state region of the Midwest and Plains despite the ongoing impact of the coronavirus outbreak, according to a monthly survey released Monday.

The overall index for the region improved in May to 43.5 from April's 35.1 but it remained in negative territory. The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score below 50 suggests decline. A score above 50 suggests growth.

The survey's confidence index improved to suggest that businesses are optimistic the economy will begin to rebound within the next six months. That index improved to 56.6 in May from April's weak 45.5 reading.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said the survey shows that the coronavirus outbreak has had a greater impact on businesses tied directly to the consumer and a smaller impact on manufacturers.

"This is a consumer led recession with manufacturing lagging. Nonetheless, Creighton's survey indicates that the regional manufacturing sector is trapped in a recession," said Goss, who oversees the survey.

The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

The employment index for the region remained in negative territory at 40 in May, but it improved significantly from April's record low of 26.2. Goss said that before the coronavirus outbreak took hold in mid March there were only 160,170 workers in the region receiving unemployment benefits. By early May, that number soared to more than 1.3 million workers receiving unemployment.

The survey's inflation index increased to 48.6 in May from April's 44, but it still indicated that wholesale prices are declining.

The region's trade numbers both fell in May. The export index dropped to a record low of 15.9 in May from April's 19.4. The import index slipped to 36 in May from 38.7 in April.

Several other measures of economic health in the survey also suggested declines. The inventory index increased to 48.6 in May from April's 36.9. The new order index increased to 31.7 from April's 21. The sales index grew to 33.3 from April's 23.3, and the index that gauges speed of deliveries of raw materials declined to 63.8 in May from 68.3 in April.

Survey shows business leaders optimistic despite coronavirus

LINCOLN-More Nebraska prison employees have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing to 14 the total number of employees in the state's 10 prison facilities who've tested positive for the virus.

The two new cases are those of staff members employed at the state prison at Tecumseh, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said in a news release late Sunday. The release said both staffers are self-isolating at home.

The department said it will notify those who work and live in the facility about the new cases. Department officials also are directing anyone who may have had close contact with the infected staff members to self-quarantine until they are cleared by a medical provider.

The new, lighter restrictions approved by Gov. Pete Ricketts went into effect in 89 of Nebraska's 93 counties.

The new rules will also allow non-contact sports such as baseball, softball and volleyball to resume practices on Monday, and games can begin on June 18. Rodeos can also resume Monday, but contact sports such as football, basketball and wrestling will remain prohibited.

Ricketts imposed the rules to try to prevent the coronavirus from spreading and overwhelming the state's hospitals. State officials confirmed another 196 new cases on Sunday, bringing the statewide total to 14,101. Of that number, 170 people have died from the virus. More than 103,800 people have been tested so far.

Hospitals statewide continued to have adequate capacity, with 45% of hospital beds, 49% of intensive care unit beds and 77% of ventilators still available for use.

Some restrictions were also eased in hard-hit Hall, Hamilton, Merrick and Dakota counties, but to a lesser extent.

Nebraska kicks off 1st day of lighter virus restrictions

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A Hastings man has died following an automobile accident near Hershey.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, on May 30, 2020, at 4:02 p.m., the North Platte 911 Center received a call of a vehicle rollover accident at mile marker 164 on US Interstate 80 (just east of the Hershey, NE. interchange). Deputies and first responders arrived and found sixty-two-year-old Randy McCoy of Hastings, NE. deceased.

Accident Investigators determined Mr. McCoy was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 and left the roadway on right. The vehicle entered the north ditch, struck a drainage culvert and rolled numerous times. The vehicle came to rest on South River Road (just north of Interstate 80). 

Mr. McCoy was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. 

Marijuana was suspected as a contributing factor in the accident.

Hastings man killed in accident near Hershey

Using probiotics instead of antibiotics on livestock? A person might think, “Oh. So instead of injecting an animal with a type of medicine to keep them from getting sick we will feed them yogurt.” Sort of.

We would be feeding livestock “good” bugs – microorganisms that are best for their digestive system. The FDA defines direct-fed microbials (DFM) as “products that are purported to contain live (viable) microorganisms (bacteria and/or yeast) and are sometimes called probiotic products.” The FDA requires feed manufacturers to use the term “direct fed microbial.”

For example, the rumen in cattle have thousands upon thousands of unique types of microbes, so instead of giving them an antibiotic to keep them from getting sick we would feed them a ration based on the microbes in their stomach to keep them from getting sick or to make them feel better when they are sick.

Some livestock producers may ask “Why would we switch to probiotics instead of continuing to use antibiotics?” Antibiotics have a withdrawal time to ensure there is no antibiotic residue in the animal’s tissue by the time it is harvested. In spite of this, consumers still have fears of antibiotic residue. Since livestock producers respect those fears, the use of probiotics would provide an alternative to using antibiotics.

Will producers ever be able to completely stop using antibiotics? Probably not, because antibiotics have a true power to eliminate bacteria that cause disease. I believe that there could definitely be a future with much less antibiotics being used. Scientists go through a lot of research to pick specific microorganisms in a probiotic that will help whatever is wrong with that animal. Probiotics must be able to survive and grow in the host and adhere to and colonize wherever the pathogen may be. Often, that will be in the epithelial cells of the gut. Probiotics are also researched to make sure they do not cause a resistance in the host.

Advances in products to optimize gut health have led to using a feed additive such as mannan rich fractions, or MRFs, which remove unfavorable bacteria. MRFs are made from yeast carbohydrates and prevent pathogens from binding to gut epithelia. A pathogen causes a disease first by attaching itself to the gut lining, enabling it to replicate, causing inflammation leading to reduced nutrient absorption. MRFs have been shown to improve absorption of nutrients and thus improve performance, according to an article in All About Feed.

Will probiotics be able to work alongside with antibiotics? How are probiotics made for cattle?

Direct fed microbials have been used for decades to improve intestinal health, but recently have been found to improve conditions in the rumen, such as reducing acidosis in cattle with bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and their effect on starch digestion.

Probiotics, or DFMs, work very well when animals are in stressful situations said an article in Progressive Cattle. For example, when feedlots or producers are receiving high-risk calves that have heat stress or are immune-compromised, probiotics can help the animals immensely.

Probiotics are usually marketed as supplements and are not considered drugs that have to go through a formal approval process with FDA. Probiotics are just the “good” bugs that not all animals have enough of in their digestive systems.

Examples of probiotics and prebiotics (MRFs) already being used in livestock are mannan oligosaccharides, fructooligosaccharides, and yeast. These all help enhance the growth of good bacteria. Oligosaccharides attach and bind to pathogens and toxins, which then eventually will be eliminated from the animal.

Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species of bacteria have been proven to protect animals from certain infections. Some multi-strain probiotics also have a more broad-spectrum effect so that they can decrease more strains of infections. Probiotics also help the animal to absorb more nutrients.

My father is a large-animal veterinarian and my mom stays at home to take care of the cattle. We run a one-hundred head cow/calf herd. My family and I feed a mineral supplement called Vitaferm, which contains Amaferm and acts as a prebiotic. Amaferm helps deliver microbial protein and energy through increased digestibility. Antibiotics are used occasionally when we have a sick cow or calf.

Marketing probiotics in our beef rather than antibiotics will help producers like us avoid dealing with withdrawal times if we were feeding antibiotics. Instead of paying more for antibiotics, maybe probiotics will be more cost effective as long as they keep our livestock healthy.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - America's cities boarded up windows, swept up glass and covered graffiti Sunday as the country's most significant night of protests in a half-century promised to spill into another day of unrest fueled by killings of black people at the hands of police.

The turbulence sparked by the death of George Floyd - a black man who died after being pinned under the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer - shook not only the streets of New York and Los Angeles, but dozens of smaller communities such as Fargo, North Dakota, and Lincoln, Nebraska. The damage extended even to buildings near the White House.

Peaceful protests involving tens of thousands of people on Saturday gave way, in some places, to rioting, looting and violence, with police vehicles torched, stores emptied and objects hurled at officers. The police response varied from restrained to aggressive, with officers at times firing tear gas and rubber bullets.

Police and peaceful protesters alike pleaded for a stop to violence, saying it only hindered calls for justice and reform.

"It only hurts the cause," said Danielle Outlaw, head of the police force in Philadelphia, where more than 200 people were arrested as fires and looting engulfed Center City.

Disgust over generations of racism in a country founded by slaveholders combined with a string of recent high-profile killings to stoke the anger. Three months before Floyd's death, Ahmaud Arbery was fatally shot as he jogged through a Georgia neighborhood. A white father and son are charged in the slaying. The month after Arbery was killed, an EMT named Breonna Taylor was shot eight times by Louisville, Kentucky, narcotics detectives who knocked down her front door. No drugs were found in her home.

Adding to that was angst from months of lockdowns brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, which has disproportionately hurt communities of color, not only in terms of infections but in job losses and economic stress.

The droves of people congregating in chanting demonstrations threatened to trigger new outbreaks, a fact overshadowed by the boiling tensions.

"We're sick of it. The cops are out of control," protester Olga Hall said in Washington, D.C. "They're wild. There's just been too many dead boys."

The scale of the protests, sweeping from coast to coast and unfolding on a single night, rivaled the historic demonstrations of the civil rights and Vietnam War eras.

Curfews were imposed in places around the U.S., including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. About 5,000 National Guard soldiers and airmen were activated in 15 states and Washington, D.C.

In Minneapolis, the city where the protests began, police, state troopers and National Guard members moved in soon after an 8 p.m. curfew took effect Saturday to break up demonstrations. The show of force came after three days in which police largely avoided engaging protesters, and after the state poured more than 4,000 National Guard troops into Minneapolis. Authorities said that number would soon rise to nearly 11,000.

President Donald Trump appeared to cheer on the tougher tactics, commending the National Guard deployment in Minneapolis and declaring "No games!" He said police in New York City "must be allowed to do their job!"

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden condemned the violence as he continued to express common cause with those demonstrating after Floyd's death.

"The act of protesting should never be allowed to overshadow the reason we protest," Biden said in a late-night statement.

Dozens of additional protests were underway or expected on Sunday, from Miami to Kansas City to San Francisco.

At the Minneapolis intersection where Floyd was killed, people gathered with brooms and flowers, saying it was important to protect what they called a "sacred space." The intersection was blocked with the traffic cones while a ring of flowers was laid out.

County Commissioner Angela Conley showed up shortly after the curfew lifted, saying that police had trampled flowers and photos of Floyd. "The community needs healing, and what happened last night only exacerbated the pain that's been felt," she said of police action.

Conley said the demonstrations and confrontations with police would continue until the other three officers who were at the scene when Floyd was pinned down are arrested and prosecuted. The officer who put his knee on Floyd's neck, Derek Chauvin, was charged last week with murder. All four officers have been fired.

"We'll continue to have this militarized presence in our community until justice is done," Conley said.

In tweets Sunday, Trump blamed anarchists and the media for fueling the violence. Attorney General William Barr pointed a finger at "far left extremist" groups. Police chiefs and politicians around the country accused outsiders of coming in and causing the problems.

Few parts of America were untouched. Protesters set fires inside Reno's city hall, and police launched tear gas at rock-throwing demonstrators in Fargo, North Dakota. In Salt Lake City, demonstrators flipped a police car and lit it on fire. Police said six people were arrested and an officer was injured after being struck in the head with a baseball bat.

By Sunday, the fury had spread to Europe, where thousands gathered in London's Trafalgar Square, clapping and waving placards despite government rules barring crowds because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At least 13 police officers were injured in Philadelphia, and at least four police vehicles were set on fire. In New York, a video showed two police cruisers lurching into a crowd of demonstrators who were pushing a barricade against one of them and pelting it with objects. Several people were knocked to the ground. It was unclear if anyone was hurt.

"The mistakes that are happening are not mistakes. They're repeated violent terrorist offenses, and people need to stop killing black people," Brooklyn protester Meryl Makielski said.

In Indianapolis, two people were reported dead in bursts of downtown violence, adding to deaths reported in Detroit and Minneapolis in recent days.

Sites around the U.S. were defaced with spray-painted messages, from the facade of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York to the historic Hay-Adams hotel near the White House. Some of Floyd's gasped last words - "I can't breathe" - were repeated around the country, alongside anti-police messages.

On Sunday, maintenance crews near the White House worked to replace windows that had been shattered with large pieces of wood. Buildings for blocks were marked with graffiti, including curses about Trump. Shattered glass still covered the sidewalks. The damaged buildings included the Department of Veterans Affairs, directly across the street from the White House.

Some leaders prepared to put more soldiers in the streets by evening. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp authorized the deployment of up to 3,000 National Guard troops to Athens, Savannah and any other cities where more demonstrations were planned. Kemp had already approved up to 1,500 Guardsmen to help enforce a 9 p.m. Saturday curfew in Atlanta.

This week's unrest recalled the riots in Los Angeles nearly 30 years ago after the acquittal of the white police officers who beat Rodney King, a black motorist who had led them on a high-speed chase. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Another night of unrest in every corner of the country left charred and shattered landscapes in dozens of American cities Sunday as years of festering frustrations&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/48ef05c89be618a6f6d2bc9a7754aced">over the mistreatment of African Americans</a>&nbsp;at the hands of police boiled over in expressions of rage met with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Cars and businesses were torched, the words “I can’t breathe” were spray-painted all over buildings, a fire in a trash bin&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/d67bf4f43468288dc3a1dd2d9ee32f46">burned near the gates&nbsp;</a>of the White House, and tens of thousands marched peacefully through city streets to protest the death of George Floyd, a black man who died Monday after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on his neck until he stopped breathing.

His death is one of a litany of racial tragedies that have thrown the country into chaos amid the coronavirus pandemic that has left millions out of work and killed more than 100,000 people in the U.S., including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/8a3430dd37e7c44290c7621f5af96d6b">disproportionate numbers of black people.</a>

“We’re sick of it. The cops are out of control,” protester Olga Hall said in Washington D.C. “They’re wild. There’s just been too many dead boys.”

People set fire to police cars, threw bottles at police officers and busted windows of storefronts, carrying away TVs and other items even as some protesters urged them to stop. In Indianapolis, police were investigating multiple shootings, including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/493d4b3f49635397133f3d18a6a7a054">one that left a person dead</a>&nbsp;amid the protests — adding to deaths in Detroit and Minneapolis in recent days.

In Minneapolis, the city where the protests began, police, state troopers and National Guard members moved in soon after an 8 p.m. curfew took effect to break up protests, firing tear gas and rubber bullets to clear streets outside a police precinct and elsewhere.

At least 13 police officers were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/f7117ea1728ff427e71c28a07ac4fa0e">injured in Philadelphia&nbsp;</a>when peaceful protests turned violent and at least four police vehicles were set on fire. The damage in U.S. cities came as many Americans plan to return to in-person church services on Sunday for the first time in several weeks since the pandemic forced a ban on large gatherings. Pastors in pulpits across the country will likely be urging peace amid the rubble of riots.

Trump appeared to cheer on the tougher tactics Saturday night, commending the National Guard deployment in Minneapolis, declaring “No games!” and saying police in New York City “must be allowed to do their job!”

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden condemned the violence as he continued to express common cause with those demonstrating after Floyd’s death.

“The act of protesting should never be allowed to overshadow the reason we protest,” Biden said in a statement Saturday night.

Overnight curfews were imposed in more than a dozen major cities nationwide, including Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, San Francisco and Seattle.

This week’s unrest recalled the riots in Los Angeles nearly 30 years ago after the acquittal of the white police officers who beat Rodney King, a black motorist who had led them on a high-speed chase. The protests of Floyd’s killing have gripped many more cities, but the losses in Minneapolis have yet to approach the staggering totals Los Angeles saw during five days of rioting in 1992, when more than 60 people died, 2,000-plus were injured and thousands arrested, with property damage topping $1 billion.

But not all protests were marred by violence. In Juneau, Alaska,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/fa2742909eda0f96a8fece5b9fe916b2">local police joined protesters at a rally</a>&nbsp;in front of a giant whale sculpture on the city’s waterfront.

“We don’t tolerate excessive use of force,” Juneau Police Chief Ed Mercer told a gathering where most people wore masks and some sang Alaska Native songs.

The show of force in Minneapolis came after three days when police largely avoided engaging protesters, and after the state poured in more than 4,000 National Guard troops to Minneapolis and said the number would soon rise to nearly 11,000.

“The situation in Minneapolis is no longer in any way about the murder of George Floyd,” said Gov. Tim Walz, who also said local forces had been overmatched the previous day. “It is about attacking civil society, instilling fear and disrupting our great cities.”

Some residents were glad to see the upheaval dissipating.

“l live here. I haven’t been able to sleep,” said Iman Muhammad, whose neighborhood saw multiple fires set Friday night. Muhammad said she sympathized with peaceful protests over Floyd’s death but disagreed with the violence: “Wrong doesn’t answer wrong.”

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts condemned vandalism and violence in Lincoln and Omaha Friday nigt and early Saturday morning after the protests turned to unrest,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.omaha.com/news/gov-ricketts-praises-peaceful-protesters-while-denouncing-property-destruction-in-lincoln-omaha/article_16e579ae-2e97-57d3-8fc2-e2c847afb50e.html" target="_blank">The Omaha World-Herald reports.</a>&nbsp;But the governor also said "the significant majority" of protesters who were peaceful.

Floyd's death in Minneapolis&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/c743eaecd9a5948a4576565b12e3230d" target="_blank">has sparked protests</a>&nbsp;in cities throughout the country. Floyd, who was black and was handcuffed, died after a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, used his knee to pin down Floyd's neck for several minutes while Floyd pleaded for air and eventually stopped moving. Chauvin now faces third-degree murder and manslaughter charges.

In Omaha, 21 people were arrested on charges including disorderly conduct, failure to disperse, firearms possession and destruction of property.

Thousands of people blocked two streets near a mall in a busy commercial area a few miles west of downtown in a demonstration that began Friday evening with protesters carrying signs and chanting.

But as the night wore on, some protesters vandalized nearby businesses, mostly by breaking windows. Omaha police said people were still in the area around 1 a.m.

In Lincoln, three people were arrested for failing to disperse. A protest there started at 2 a.m. Saturday with about 200 people and continued for hours.

State Department of Health and Human Services data showed the number of coronavirus cases rose by 4.9% or 644 from Thursday night to Saturday evening, to 13,905 since the pandemic began. The state is now reporting 170 COVID-19-related deaths, up 3.7% since Thursday night.

Despite steady increases in cases, Gov. Pete Ricketts has moved to ease social-distancing restrictions, starting Monday. The relaxed rules will allow for larger crowds at public events, and bars and other attractions will reopen for the first time in months.

For some infected people, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause severe illness or death. But for most people, it causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks.

Overall, the cost of food bought to eat at home skyrocketed by the most in 46 years, and analysts caution that meat prices in particular could remain high as slaughterhouses struggle to maintain production levels while implementing procedures intended to keep workers healthy.

While price spikes for staples such as eggs and flour have eased as consumer demand has leveled off, prices remain volatile for carrots, potatoes and other produce because of transportation issues and the health of workers who pick crops and work in processing plants.

In short, supermarket customers and restaurant owners shouldn’t expect prices to drop anytime soon.

“Our biggest concern is long-term food costs. I believe they will continue to go up,” said Julie Kalambokidis, co-owner of Adriano’s Brick Oven, a restaurant in Glenwood, Iowa.
