LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraskans may begin enjoying recreational vehicle camping by reservation only at select state park areas starting May 20, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Limited RV camping will be available at select park areas where social distancing and group-size recommendations can be maintained to help ensure compliance with the state’s public health directives amid the COVID-19 health situation. A list of the available park areas will be posted on the agency website and updated as additional areas are established.

“We sympathize with those who have been affected by this virus and the rippling effects of trying to contain it, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of people who are passionate about camping,” Game and Parks Director Jim Douglas said. “We are pleased to now be able to allow limited RV camping, and we look forward to restoring more opportunities when the time is appropriate and as conditions allow. Our priority remains to protect the health and well-being of all Nebraskans.”

Those RV campsites will have the following requirements:

-- Designated sites, which will be spaced at least 25 feet apart, can be reserved online beginning May 17 at&nbsp;<a href="https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDEsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMDA1MDYuMjExNDE0MzEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwOi8vb3V0ZG9vcm5lYnJhc2thLmdvdi8ifQ.Ys6ixM4IET-lECN6avhUA1eKxKzIWmqaY3Y59KUWepI/br/78311070776-l" target="_blank">OutdoorNebraska.org</a>&nbsp;and prepaid. First-come, first-served and tent camping will not be allowed.

-- Only self-contained recreational vehicles, with factory features that allow them to hold potable water, contain wastewater/sewage and connect to electrical service, will be allowed to reserve a site.

-- No parks’ showerhouses or modern restrooms will be open until further notice. Vault toilets and RV dump stations will be open.

-- Each campsite will be limited to eight guests, and the length of stay will be limited to seven days.

-- Mormon Island State Recreation Area (SRA) near Grand Island and Danish Alps SRA near Hubbard will not be available, as they are near communities with high COVID-19 incidence. Park areas may be added to or deleted from the list as warranted and upon recommendations of health officials.

Game and Parks retains the ability to scale back the number of campsites if social practices are not followed or if public health officials determine there is an increased incidence of virus in any region of the state.

Park grounds remain open to the public for day use and a park entry permit is needed for each vehicle entering a park.

State designated beach and swimming areas will be closed until further notice, in part due to recent incidents involving large gatherings and lack of social distancing on beach areas at multiple state park venues. Other waterfront areas will remain open for day use and fishing as long as social distancing and the 10-person gathering size limit are maintained.

In addition, current Game and Parks closures for cabins, lodge rooms, group shelters, undesignated campsites, and tent camping at state park areas and wildlife management areas will be extended at least through May 31, with possible further extension.

People with park reservations for camping or lodging affected by the extended closure can contact Game and Parks for a refund or to reschedule.

Game and Parks will continue to evaluate closures and opportunities that can be restored following state guidelines and local directed health measures. Some Nebraska state park area RV camping opportunities to be restored

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A collaborative effort of several law enforcement agencies has resulted in the arrest of the suspect involved in a pursuit Tuesday near Brady.

At approximately 7:50 p.m. Tuesday evening, a trooper located a Chevrolet Silverado, which had been reported stolen in Cozad. The trooper observed the vehicle speeding at 100 miles per hour as it was traveling westbound on Highway 30 in eastern Lincoln County. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled.

The trooper initiated a pursuit, which turned north on Haythorn Road before circling back and returning to Highway 30 westbound. As the vehicle continued driving at approximately 100 miles per hour, NSP dispatch was able to confirm the identity of the suspect. Troopers then discontinued the pursuit. The entire pursuit lasted approximately nine minutes.

Wednesday morning, a local resident located the Silverado, which had been abandoned on Tin Camp Road, south of Highway 92 in McPherson County. The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office responded and confirmed that it was the vehicle that had been stolen and had been involved in the pursuit with troopers Tuesday evening.

Several law enforcement agencies, including deputies from the McPherson, Logan, and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Offices, the NSP Aviation Support Division, and NSP Police Service Dog Division, reported to the scene to assist in a search of the area to locate the suspect. Law enforcement received a report that the suspect was at an abandoned farmstead and were quickly able to locate him and take him into custody without further incident at approximately 2:25 p.m.

Shawn Grizzle, 33, of Cozad, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, theft by unlawful taking, willful reckless driving, and as a habitual criminal. Grizzle was lodged in Lincoln County Jail. Additional charges are pending from Dawson County.

Tourism Awards are geared towards promoting performance excellence
within our tourism industry. These awards will recognize individuals
and organizations which have demonstrated best practices and offer
excellent customer service to our visitors. 


Today we presented awards in seven
categories. Visitor Bureau Advisory Board met a week ago on April
29th and choose the winners from the twenty nominations presented. 
The awards we will present today are: Excellent Service within a
Hotel, Restaurant, Retail Outlet, Event and Attraction as well as    
       Volunteer of the Year and Hero of Tourism.

Director and Curator at the Lincoln County Historical Museum

No matter who
walks in the door of the Lincoln County Historical Museum, or what
they are asking of Jim, he treats them with kindness and courtesy and
works hard to make sure that their needs are met. And it’s not only
the visitors who recognize his kindness and professionalism. He
treats all of his volunteers with the utmost respect and goes out of
his way to make sure that they feel appreciated for the work that
they do.

Christmas
Village Drive Through Committee, Lincoln County Historical Museum

The museum’s
Christmas Village draws 11,000 visitors annually who come from 20
different states and 42 of the counties in Nebraska. This committee
of dedicated individuals begins planning for the Christmas Village
each summer. When December finally comes they give up their weeks and
weekends through Christmas Eve to make sure that the lights stay lit,
the popcorn is popped, and each car is personally greeted and
welcomed to the Christmas Village. In total, this committee of 12
puts in approximately 1,000 hours of time so that every visitor
leaves with a smile.

TRU’s guests by introducing them to local restaurants, attractions

within the TRU brand. When not busy at the property, she spends time
volunteering with the Lincoln County Historical Museum and the Miss
Nebraska Pageant.

Jack Morris has
been a faithful and dedicated member of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo
Committee for 20 years. He has served as either Chair or Co-Chair for
much of that time. The Buffalo Bill Rodeo has been elevated to a new
level in part because of Jack’s vision and dedication to making it
a premiere event within NEBRASKAland DAYS. Jack dedicates a
significant amount of time each year to the rodeo and NEBRASKAland
DAYS, always driven to produce an event worthy of its namesake.

Dusty Barner has
made a difference by filling a need for the valued “one of a kind”
experience that our visitors are seeking. Dusty understands that
tourists want to participate, not just look at something, and he
tirelessly works to provide that. Visitors to Dusty Trails can ride a
horse, pet a goat, tank down the river and watch wild life up close
and personal. Dusty Barner has become a Hero of Tourism by offering
an experience for the visitors to our area.

The second annual Excellence in

with the continued once a week essential grocery shopping and medical
rides. All riders must wear some type of mask. It could be a homemade
mask, scarf, bandanna, etc.

are doing our best we can at social distancing with having 3 or fewer
riders on the bus at a time. Thank you for your patience as we adjust
to these new guidelines.

North
Platte Public Transit will also be closed on Monday, May 25, 2020, in
observance of Memorial Day. There will be no bus service that day. We
will run accordingly Tuesday, May 26.

LINCOLN –&nbsp;Four additional deaths related to COVID-19 were reported to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday.

One death was an Adams County resident. A man in his 60s who had been hospitalized.

A fourth death was also reported. More details are forthcoming.

Local health departments are reporting deaths and cases in their jurisdictions. In the event of a discrepancy between DHHS dashboard data and deaths or cases reported by local public health officials, data reported by the local health department should be considered the most up to date.

The total number of COVID-19-related deaths in the state to date is 82, according to the DHHS data dashboard. The state case total, as of 5:45 p.m. Central Daylight Time, is 6,438. Nebraska's COVID-19 case totals are updated daily at&nbsp;<a href="http://dhhs.ne.gov/coronavirus">http://dhhs.ne.gov/coronavirus</a>.&nbsp;

Governor Pete Ricketts has announced changes to some of the state's Directed Health Measures, including reopenings of selected businesses in specific regions of Nebraska. Four additional COVID-19 related deaths reported in Nebraska on Tuesday

LINCOLN, Neb.-On Tuesday, at his daily coronavirus press briefing, Governor Pete Ricketts thanked CHI Health for swiftly setting up a laboratory to help run coronavirus tests for Nebraskans.&nbsp; Swabs taken at Test Nebraska mobile testing sites will be delivered to the CHI Health lab in Lincoln for analysis.

Derek Vance, President of CHI Health St. Elizabeth and Nebraska Heart, joined the Governor to talk about the laboratory. &nbsp;He noted that the lab can run 24/7 with the capacity to process 3,000 tests per day once testing is fully ramped up.

At today’s press conference, Gov. Ricketts also designated May 6-12, 2020 as National Nurses Week in Nebraska. &nbsp;Additionally, he proclaimed the entire month of May as National Nurses Month in the state. &nbsp;Dr. Kari Wade, President-Elect of the Nebraska Nurses Association, spoke about the vital work being done by nurses throughout the state during the ongoing pandemic.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;St. Elizabeth has served Nebraska and the city of Lincoln for over 120 years.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When the Governor called to ask if we would stand up a central laboratory to support Test Nebraska, we were honored to answer that call.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We’ve been working around the clock, with our staff and State resources, to get the laboratory ready.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Normally, it would take several weeks—even months—to set up and validate the equipment. &nbsp;In just under a week of hard work, we are now validated and ready to go.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We’ve received new equipment, such as robotics, to enable us to do the large number of tests.&nbsp; All of this has been funded by the State of Nebraska.

3 new COVID-19 cases, Panhandle total positive count 58

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A 16-year-old North Platte boy has drowned at an interstate lake just west of North Platte.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the boy was part of a group of about seven teens who were fishing and swimming at the lake on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say the body was recovered that the boy's next of kin have been notified. The boy's identity was not released.

The Birdwood Wildlife Management Area, commonly known as Fire Lake, is just west of North Platte along Interstate 80.

On May 5, 2020, at 4:35 p.m., Deputies received a report of a possible drowning that occurred at Birdwood State Wildlife Management Area (Fire Lake) off Homestead Road. This area is an interstate lake just west of North Platte, NE. Additionally, North Platte Fire and Rescue and the Lincoln County Dive Team responded.

Lincoln County Dive Team members were able to deploy and recover the deceased body of a 16-year-old boy. On scene investigation revealed that several teenagers were fishing and swimming in the area when the boy went missing. Drugs or alcohol were not a factor and the preliminary cause of death is accidental.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska has opened a new lab to analyze the results of about 3,000 coronavirus tests per day and will launch more testing sites beyond those operating in Omaha and hard-hit Grand Island, officials said Tuesday.

CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln will serve as the state's lab under the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.testnebraska.com/" target="_blank">TestNebraska</a>&nbsp;program, which state officials launched through a contract with a Utah startup.

"This is going to allow us to greatly expand our testing," Gov. Pete Ricketts said at his weekday coronavirus news conference.

Nebraska officials have sought to increase the state's testing capacity to get a better sense of where the coronavirus is and how quickly it's spreading.

Under the $27&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/52eda39181f16865f4a0f8ed43808d2b" target="_blank">million, no-bid contract</a>&nbsp;with Nomi Health and other firms, Nebraska received 540,000 tests, plus the equipment needed to analyze them and website support to help people enroll. Ricketts said about 122,000 Nebraska residents have signed up so far.

Iowa, which has a similar contract with Nomi, faced criticism last week because of a data-entry backlog at its State Hygienic Laboratory that resulted in a delay to virus test results. Ricketts said he doesn't anticipate any such delays in Nebraska, and he has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/52eda39181f16865f4a0f8ed43808d2b" target="_blank">defended the tests' accuracy</a>&nbsp;after questions were raised about those conducted in Utah.

The new lab will operate around-the-clock, seven days a week, with a staff of 15 to 25 medical technologists and lab assistants, said Derek Vance, the hospital's president.

Nebraska has already been testing for the virus at locations not affiliated with the TestNebraska program, including the state public health lab, the University of Nebraska Medical Center and some private hospitals, but officials acknowledge the need for more tests.

Nebraska has confirmed 6,083 coronavirus cases and 78 deaths as of Tuesday, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services. More than 28,500 people have been tested.

Nebraska sets up new lab, expects to add virus testing sites

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-&nbsp;Great Plains Health employees lined the hallway to celebrate Tuesday afternoon as a patient was discharged after treatment for COVID-19 that included five days on a ventilator.

Fifty-six-year-old Oscar Orellana of Dawson County was cheered by more than 50 Great Plains Health employees as he was wheeled out of the hospital after 13 days in the COVID unit. 

Orellana gave written consent for the send-off and was happily shouting “te amo” – I love you – to the staff as they wheeled him to his waiting family members. Wearing a Great Plains Health “together, we will rise” t-shirt, Orellana was also carrying 13 roses given to him by one of his nurses, Maddie Hoaglund. “He spent 13 days away from his wife and roses are her favorite flower,” said Hoaglund.

“This was a very sick patient and we are pleased to be celebrating his successful recovery,” said Mel McNea, Great Plains Health chief executive officer. “It is also a time to recognize the ongoing commitment and dedication of our staff members who are working the front lines during this COVID-19 pandemic. The celebration of Oscar’s discharge is confirmation that our hospital and team members are offering the best COVID-19 care to members of our region.”

Orellana will self-quarantine at home as he continues to recover from the disease and gain strength.

As of May 4, there have been 6,083 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in Nebraska and 78 deaths. In Lincoln County, there have been 33 positive cases and 2 deaths.

Great Plains Health employees celebrate COVID-19 patient’s recovery: from ventilator to discharge

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Another staffer at Lincoln's Nebraska State Penitentiary has tested positive for the new coronavirus, state prisons officials said Tuesday.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services announced the newest case in a news release, marking the system's fifth confirmed case of the virus.

The staff member is isolating at home, and anyone who may have had close contact with the employee in the last three days will be directed to self-quarantine until they are medically cleared to return to work, department Director Scott Frakes said in a written statement.

The department said no inmates have tested positive for COVID-19.

Another Nebraska prisons staffer tests positive for COVID-19

Longtime business instructor Kathleen McCune will retire from North Platte Community College on May 13.

McCune began teaching at NPCC more than 40 years ago – in fact, it was her first job out of college.

“I never intended to go into education, but I’m glad I did.” said McCune. “Teaching has given me a great deal of satisfaction over the years. That feeling of helping students reach their goals and knowing I’m making an impact on their lives is very rewarding – almost indescribable.”

Her arrival at NPCC, and rural Nebraska for that matter, was a bit of a culture shock.

McCune is originally from Merriam, Kan., which is on the outskirts of Kansas City. She graduated in 1972 from Shawnee Mission North High School with about 700 classmates then attended Kansas State University, in Manhattan.

“I was a business major originally,” McCune said. “I went into that field because, in some way, everything is about business. Then, I began studying foreign language as well. My idea was to put the two together into a multinational something.”

Her plans changed after she got married. McCune earned bachelor’s degrees in both business and foreign language in 1977 then obtained a Master of Business Administration degree in 1979.

Immediately after graduation, she moved with her husband, Myron, to North Platte then to Sutherland, where he is originally from. Myron began work as a veterinarian while Kathleen searched for jobs in local communities.

“I was basically going door-to-door submitting my résumé,” Kathleen said. “I put in an application at the college not knowing if there was even a job open. Luckily, there was a business instructor position open.”

Still, it wasn’t quite what she had imagined.

“My first thought was that I needed a job,” Kathleen said. “My second thought was that I would have to figure a lot of things out. I was meek, and quiet and introverted, but we had a fabulous faculty at the college. I paid attention to what they did and tried to emulate it. I soon found that I could make a difference through teaching, and I loved that.”

Although time-consuming, learning a new field proved to be a nice outlet for her. It took her mind off the fact that she was a state away from everything familiar and living in a community where she didn’t know anyone.

“Teaching kept me busy and helped me meet friends,” Kathleen said. “The first person I met was Marilyn McGahan. She was very kind and welcoming, and she helped me cultivate those connections and relationships that I needed.”

As she became more comfortable in her role, and at the urging of her colleagues, Kathleen began joining professional organizations.

“Once I was involved, I found so many advantages – from the support that came with having a network of peers to the opportunities to learn new things and grow as an individual,” Kathleen. “I’ve been able to develop leadership skills and hold leadership roles as a result of those skills. I’ve also had opportunities to write and publish, which I never would have done before.”

The National Business Education Association, Nebraska State Business Education Association, Association for Career and Technical Education, Association for Research in Business Education-Delta Pi Epsilon, Mid-Plains Education Association and Phi Beta Lambda are just a handful of organizations Kathleen has been involved with over the years.

She has written for “NSBEA Today,” “ACTEN — The Communique” and “The Forum” and co-authored two chapters for the National Business Education Association Yearbook. Kathleen also served as a reviewer for “The Journal of Research in Business Education.”

In honor of her commitment to students and the advancement of career and technical education, she has been named Region V Postsecondary Teacher of the Year by ACTE, the NSBEA and the Mountain-Plains Business Education Association. She doesn’t take full credit for any of the recognitions, however.

“My colleagues have always served as my mentors,” Kathleen said. “The business department at the college is a very strong department. We always say, ‘Give us a job, and we’ll get it done’.”

She admits those jobs have been much easier in recent years, thanks to the evolution of technology.

“When I started at the college, we had a chalkboard, overhead projector, Ditto machine and typewriter,” Kathleen said. “If I wanted to make a handout, it was a very laborious process. Now, our classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.”

Regardless of how she taught or what she taught with, the one thing that has remained constant is the students.

“The way we teach is different, but students’ needs are not,” Kathleen said. “Students expect faculty to care about them and respect them and that has remained true through the decades. They want to know their instructors believe in them, aren’t going to give up on them and will help them succeed.”

Being that person is what she’s going to miss the most as she enters retirement. Kathleen has always tried to serve as a role model of positivity, professionalism and passion for her classes.

“I’ve had some great experiences and great students over the years,” Kathleen said. “I love that I’ve been able to teach first-generation college students. Commencement is such an exciting time because I look at the crowd – at the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who are so excited to get that picture of a family member in a cap and gown, and I feel proud for them.”

The pleasure she still gets out of teaching is part of why Kathleen made the decision to retire now.

“I didn’t want to work to the point where I didn’t want to work,” Kathleen said. “I wanted to be young enough to maybe have another career and not retire so old that I wouldn’t have anything else to do. Sometimes, you don’t know what your opportunities are until you stop doing what you’re doing.”

While she’s looking forward to spending more time with her husband, children and eight grandchildren, the pandemic and subsequent new norm of teaching from home has made Kathleen realize that she will miss the structure, routine and busyness of walking into a classroom.
