The Hot Sheets: June 27th, 2024

Alliance, Ne - Wednesday (June 26, 2024) morning, at 2:24am, Alliance police received a call from James Haller at 101 S. Flack Ave that he had just shot an intruder who had forcibly entered his home. 

The suspect, Jerome Robb, who has a history of burglary was pronounced dead at the scene. Although the investigation is ongoing, evidence on the scene is consistent with the description of events provided by Mr. Haller. 

The deceased was transported for a routine autopsy by authority of the coroner. The case will be reviewed by the district attorney; however no charges have been recommended against Mr. Haller at this time.

(GRAND ISLAND, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— 58 high school students got the chance to train like a trooper last week at the Nebraska State Patrol Training Academy. The cadets were all part of the 54th&nbsp;Junior Law Academy, which gives high school seniors-to-be a glimpse of what it takes to be a Nebraska State Trooper.

“These cadets worked hard throughout the entire week, taking on some of the same training that our troopers go through,” said Captain Andy Ecklund, NSP Director of Training. “Junior Law gives these students an experience they’ll remember for years to come. These young men and women showed determination to complete the training and the drive necessary to make a difference for our state. We’d love to have them become Nebraska Troopers in a few years.”

Last week, 28 boys and 30 girls graduated from the 54th&nbsp;Junior Law Academy. Several of the cadets received awards for their excellent performances during the week.

Junior Law is an annual program organized by the American Legion Department of Nebraska and hosted by the NSP Training Academy in Grand Island. High school juniors from across the state are eligible to apply for the program. Troopers from around Nebraska come together to teach the cadets and put them through several blocks of training. Several current Nebraska State Troopers are graduates of Junior Law.

Applications for the 55th&nbsp;Junior Law Academy, scheduled for June 2025, will be made available in the coming months at the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.nebraskalegion.net/Programs/JRLaw.html" target="_blank">American Legion website</a>. The academy is open to boys and girls who are preparing for their senior year of high school.

The Hot Sheets: June 26th, 2024

Frontier County - Two are dead following a fatal head-on collision over the weekend in Frontier County, according to officials.

At approximately 12:45 am Saturday, an off-duty Trooper came upon a 2-vehicle collision that had occurred on Highway 83, approximately 6 miles south of Maywood. Additional troopers, Frontier County deputies, and EMS responded.

Preliminary investigation shows that a Ford Explorer, driven by Douglas Horn, 66, of Curtis, was northbound on Highway 83 when it crossed the center line and struck a southbound Mazda 6, driven by Jenna Cox, 24, of Hastings. Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

The Hot Sheets: June 25th, 2024

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has been notified of high levels of E. Coli at Medicine Creek State Recreation Area, also known as Harry Strunk Lake, located in Frontier County. This means the water has a higher than usual number of bacteria, and residents should take extra care to not swallow any lake water.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“With the assistance of DHHS, we carefully monitor our lakes weekly during the summer for potential health risks,” explains Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “When a lake has high E Coli levels, we recommend using caution around the water. If you are going to swim, make sure not to swallow water and don’t allow pets to drink the lake water.”&nbsp;

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), swimming during high E Coli levels can cause health issues. Young children should not be in the water at this point in time, since they are more susceptible to complications from E. Coli and other bacterial infections.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Symptoms can include abdominal cramps or pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, and loss of appetite, usually 3 or 4 days after exposure to the water. If you swam and are having these symptoms, contact your medical provider.&nbsp;

Southwest Nebraska Public Health DepartmentSouthwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has been notified of high levels of E. Coli at Medicine Creek State Recreation Area, also known as Harry Strunk Lake, located in Frontier County. This means the water has a higher than usual number of bacteria, and residents should take extra care to not swallow any lake water.&nbsp;&nbsp;“With the assistance of DHHS, we carefully monitor our lakes weekly during the summer for potential health risks,” explains Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “When a lake has high E Coli levels, we recommend using caution around the water. If you are going to swim, make sure not to swallow water and don’t allow pets to drink the lake water.”&nbsp;According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), swimming during high E Coli levels can cause health issues. Young children should not be in the water at this point in time, since they are more susceptible to complications from E. Coli and other bacterial infections.&nbsp;&nbsp;Symptoms can include abdominal cramps or pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, and loss of appetite, usually 3 or 4 days after exposure to the water. Harry Strunk Lake Health Notice 

CHADRON – Chadron State College alum Seth Ryker, Principal of Gothenburg Public Schools, said he is honored to be named the Nebraska High School Principal of the Year.

Ryker has been in education since 2000 when he started as a sixth through eighth grade teacher at Wolfe Creek Elementary in South Dakota. He later took a position at Broken Bow Public Schools as a social studies teacher and later as the Activities Director. In 2005, he became the Activities Director and Assistant Principal at Gothenburg Junior/Senior High School. He served in that role until 2017 when he became the principal for grades seven through 12.

Ryker said he was unsure about his career choice when he enrolled at CSC.

“I took the intro to teaching course with Dr. [Don] King and quickly became convinced that I had discovered my future,” Ryker said. “Chadron State College had me very well prepared to lead a classroom. I thoroughly enjoyed all of my methodology and coaching classes.”

Ryker began work on a master’s degree in Education Administration immediately after starting his first teaching position.

“The graduate program at CSC helped develop my leadership skills, as well as further developing my educational philosophy,” he said. “I met a lot of fellow graduate students who would become great administrators in other schools. Those relationships are still impactful all these years later. I have been blessed to work with outstanding teachers and fellow administrators, many of whom are also Chadron State graduates.”

Two CSC professors stand out in Ryker’s memory as making a lasting impact on him.

“Dr. King taught many of our education classes and led the professional semester. He helped instill a sense of professionalism and classroom readiness in us. Dr. Rolland Dewing served as my academic adviser and he supervised me during student teaching. I always appreciated his sense of humor and his perspective,” Ryker said.

Ryker said the students, parents, and other teachers he works with are the most rewarding aspects of his role in education.

“The high school journey and the milestones and challenges that go with growing up and preparing for adulthood is an incredibly exciting point in their lives. I also get to collaborate with an outstanding team of teachers. I have had very few original ideas, but I do always try to listen to those around me and enact programs and interventions that support our outstanding students,” he said.

In a press release from Nebraska State Association of Secondary School Principals, Allison Jonas, Superintendent at Gothenburg Public Schools, said Ryker possesses a remarkable talent for engaging with teacher leaders.

“His leadership style not only promotes teamwork but also inspires a shared vision among staff. His capacity to collaborate seamlessly with teachers and support staff has led to expanded opportunities for students, collaborative opportunities for staff, and a welcoming culture with high expectations for both students and staff,” Jonas said.

The storms occurred May 20 – June 3, resulting in severe thunderstorms, high winds, multiple tornadoes, heavy rain and flooding. There was damage to private property, public property and infrastructure in Butler, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas, Dundy, Fillmore, Hamilton, Hayes, Hitchcock, Howard, Keith, Lincoln, Platte, Polk, Red Willow, Saunders and Washington counties.

Gov. Pillen has issued an emergency disaster declaration, which will free up state funds and resources to assist those counties in addressing damage and other issues.

In a separate, but related action, Gov. Pillen has asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for additional time to complete preliminary damage assessments in those counties. Those assessments will further support the state’s request for federal assistance. The 30-day extension, if approved, would last until Aug. 2.

Gov. Pillen Issues Emergency Disaster Declaration for May 20 – June 3 Storms

Grant, Neb. - Perkins County junior Myles Bishop is spending the week in Washington D.C. and is representing Midwest Electric at the Nebraska Rural Electric Assocation (NREA) Youth Tour.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Nebraska Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour is a weeklong trip to Washington D.C. and is open to high school students who participate in Youth Energy Camp. More than 1,800 students from 41 states participated in this event. High school students who attend energy camp have the opportunity to become a state ambassador.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The NREA announced on June 19th that Bishop was selected as its&nbsp;Youth Leadership Council representative and will represent Nebraska at the 2025 NRECA PowerXchange in Atlanta, Georgia.&nbsp;

The PowerXchange tour is the largest gathering of electric cooperative leaders and lets these leaders get together and talk about the challenges of the industry changing. The 2025 event will take place March 7th - 12th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bishop will be entering his sophomore year at Perkins County and last year was a member of the Plainsmen football and basketball teams. He plays wide receiver in football and shooting guard on the basketball court.&nbsp;

Bryan is a well-known name in the country music industry and has won numerous awards during his career including the 2021 Entertainer of the Year at the ACM Awards. Bryan is currently on tour and has a scheduled stop in Omaha on July 26th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ticket information for the Luke Bryan show will come out later this month. The second concert for the Viaero Wireless Summer Series is still TBD.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: June 23rd, 2024

North Platte, Ne - Around 3am Saturday a small cluster of storms rolled through Lincoln County, however they packed a punch with winds that uprooted trees and even took the roof off an outbuilding at Mead Lumber at the corner of 6th and Eastman.&nbsp;

Dillon and Crystal Johnson live across the the street to the south and said "the wind hit around 3am, we heard a loud bang (sound) and the electricity went off." The Johnson's said city workers were quick to the scene and began to clear the street and work on getting electricty restored which they did about 50 minutes later. When the roof blew off it caught the power line as it sailed across the street.&nbsp;

Brandon Jones,&nbsp;Vice President of Construction Operations at Beveridge Incorporated was on the scene Saturday morning and said they were bringing in an excavator to help get the roof out of the tree.&nbsp;

There was damage all over North Platte including the airport where Trego Dugan had hanger doors damaged.&nbsp;

The National Weather Service was out surveying damage Saturday morning but hasn't released a statement in regards to what may have played a part in the wind damage. The Weather Service is calling for partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 87 today. North northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

The Lexington Police Department have identified the 39-year-old as Genaro Martinez-Martinez. Officials say they have worked with Homeland Security but have been unsuccessful in locating any family.&nbsp;

Lexington, Neb. - The Lexington Police Department suspects no foul play in the death of a man who was found lying in an alley last week.&nbsp;

On Thursday, June 13th at 6:15 pm, officers along with Lexington Fire and Rescue were dispatched to an alley downtown to a call of a male subject laying down. When first responders arrived on scene and evaluated the situation, it was determined the suspect was deceased.&nbsp;

According to the Lexington Police Department, investigation has revealed that the male subject was a 39-year-old not from the United States and was homeless. He had been in the Lexington area for one - two months. The male has been identified by officials but are withholding his identity pending family notification as they are still searching for any family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Evidence at the scene and an autopsy finding showed the male suffered rear head injuries, presumably from a backwards fall according to officials. No foul play is suspected. The investigation is still on-going.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: June 21st, 2024

CHAPPELL, Neb. — The spirit of the Pony Express lives on as modern-day riders, known as the Pony Express Re-Riders, embarked on their annual journey from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Covering nearly 2000 miles, these dedicated riders are racing against time, aiming to complete the historic route in just 10 days.

Equipped with a GPS device known as a SPOT tracker, securely nestled in the mochila, each rider carries the responsibility of ensuring the timely delivery of the mail. The SPOT tracker sends a signal, or "ping," to a satellite every five minutes, allowing enthusiasts and supporters to monitor their progress in real-time on a larger National Park Service map.

Today, the Pony Express Re-Riders passed through Chappell, a small town bustling with excitement at the sight of these modern-day couriers. Locals and visitors alike gathered at the junction of Hwy 30 and Hwy 385 to witness this historical reenactment firsthand.

"I caught them at the junction and it was an amazing sight," remarked one spectator. "To see them riding through, carrying on this tradition, it's truly inspiring."

From Chappell, the riders continue their journey, making their way towards Bridgeport and onward to Guernsey, Wyoming.&nbsp; Each stage of the ride echoes the resilience and determination that characterized the original Pony Express riders over a century ago.

 </figure>CHAPPELL, Neb. — The spirit of the Pony Express lives on as modern-day riders, known as the Pony Express Re-Riders, embarked on their annual journey from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Covering nearly 2000 miles, these dedicated riders are racing against time, aiming to complete the historic route in just 10 days.Equipped with a GPS device known as a SPOT tracker, securely nestled in the mochila, each rider carries the responsibility of ensuring the timely delivery of the mail. The SPOT tracker sends a signal, or "ping," to a satellite every five minutes, allowing enthusiasts and supporters to monitor their progress in real-time on a larger National Park Service map.Today, the Pony Express Re-Riders passed through Chappell, a small town bustling with excitement at the sight of these modern-day couriers. Locals and visitors alike gathered at the junction of Hwy 30 and Hwy 385 to witness this historical reenactment firsthand."I caught them at the junction and it was an amazing sight," remarked one spectator. "To see them riding through, carrying on this tradition, it's truly inspiring."From Chappell, the riders continue their journey, making their way towards Bridgeport and onward to Guernsey, Wyoming.&nbsp; Each stage of the ride echoes the resilience and determination that characterized the original Pony Express riders over a century ago.<figure>
