TAMPA, Fl - Nebraska head coach John Cook was announced as the 2023 AVCA Division I Women’s Coach of the Year on Thursday. Cook has been selected as the national coach of the year for the third time in his career, as he also took home the honor in 2000 and 2005.

Cook has led Nebraska to a 32-1 record this season heading into an NCAA Semifinal matchup with Pittsburgh. The Huskers lead the nation in wins and winning percentage, and Nebraska won an outright Big Ten Conference title and was selected as the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament.

Cook, who was also the AVCA North Region and Big Ten Coach of the Year, led Nebraska to a 28-1 record in the regular season, the program’s best regular-season record since 2005. The Huskers won their first 27 matches of the season and held the No. 1 ranking from Oct. 23 through the end of the regular season.

Nebraska’s success has come despite a young roster that features no seniors for just the second time in Cook’s 24 seasons. Nebraska’s regular rotation features four true freshmen and one first-year transfer. The Huskers’ 17 NCAA Semifinals rank second in NCAA history, and Nebraska’s six semifinal appearances since 2015 lead the nation.• John Cook has led Nebraska to an NCAA Semifinal for the 10th time in his 24 seasons. Cook is the fourth Division I coach to take one school to 10 NCAA Semifinals, joining Russ Rose (Penn State), Andy Banachowski (UCLA) and Jerritt Elliott (Texas).• Nebraska is 129-36 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Huskers rank second in NCAA history in postseason wins and winning percentage (.782).• Cook is 88-19 in the NCAA Tournament as Nebraska’s head coach. He is 96-24 in his NCAA Tournament career. Cook ranks second all-time in career NCAA Tournament victories and NCAA Tournament wins at one school.• Bekka Allick had a career-high 12 blocks in the regional final (her previous career high was 10 at Minnesota on Nov. 25, 2023). Allick’s 12 blocks were the most by a Husker in an NCAA Tournament match during the rally-scoring era (since 2001), breaking the record of 10, which was accomplished seven times by five Huskers.&nbsp;• Merritt Beason had 19 kills in the Arkansas match. She has produced double-digit kills in 17 of her last 18 matches, including all four matches of the NCAA Tournament. Beason has 444 kills this season. She moved into the top 10 on Nebraska’s single-season kills list, passing Mikaela Foecke (441 in 2017) and Sarah Pavan (443 in 2005) for the ninth-most single-season kills by a Husker in the rally-scoring era (since 2001).• Lexi Rodriguez had 20 digs in the regional final to increase her career total to 1,404. Rodriguez became the seventh player in school history to total 1,400 career digs.

HUSKERS RACK UP POSTSEASON AWARDS• Merritt Beason, a junior opposite hitter who transfered to NU from Florida, was named the AVCA Region Player of the Year, as well as All-Big Ten First Team and All-Region Team. Beason has stepped in as a team captain and is contributing a team-leading 3.86 kills per set this season with 2.09 digs per set and a .293 hitting percentage. A native of Gardendale, Ala., Beason earned four Big Ten Player of the Week honors this season and was the AVCA National Player of the Week on Oct. 24 following 21 kills in a 3-2 win over then-No. 1 Wisconsin. Beason had a career-high 27 kills on .426 hitting in a 3-2 reverse sweep at then-No. 16 Penn State on Nov. 3. As a sophomore at Florida in 2022, Beason was an All-SEC and AVCA All-Region selection.• Junior libero Lexi Rodriguez was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in her career, becoming the fifth player in Big Ten history to receive that honor twice in a career. She also earned AVCA All-Region and All-Big Ten First Team honors for the third time. Rodriguez, who averages 3.62 digs and 1.26 assists per set, leads a Husker defense that ranks first nationally in opponent hitting percentage. The junior from Sterling, Ill., was twice named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week this season despite opponents frequently tailoring their game plans to avoid Rodriguez on the court. Rodriguez was a first-team AVCA All-American in 2021 and a second-team AVCA All-American in 2022.&nbsp;• Freshman outside hitter Harper Murray was voted the AVCA Region Freshman of the Year and the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, making her the second ever Husker (Madi Kubik, 2019) to earn that distinction. Murray also earned All-Big Ten First Team and unanimous All-Freshman Team accolades. Murray ranks second on the Huskers in kills with 3.23 per set and adds 2.10 digs per set with a team-high 34 service aces. Murray was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times this season.• Freshman setter Bergen Reilly was chosen Big Ten Setter of the Year, becoming the first ever freshman to earn the award since it originated in 2012. She also earned All-Big Ten First Team, All-Freshman Team, and AVCA All-Region Team accolades. Reilly, just the second true freshman setter to be the starter at Nebraska under head coach John Cook, is putting up 10.64 assists and 2.70 digs per set and has 15 double-doubles this season. The Sioux Falls, S.D., native ranks 17th nationally in assists per set. Reilly was named Big Ten Setter of the Week four times this year and Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice. She paces a Husker offense that ranks in the top 20 nationally in hitting percentage (.279) and kills per set (14.06).&nbsp;• Bekka Allick, a sophomore middle blocker from Lincoln, Neb., has been Nebraska’s top defensive presence at the net with a team-best 1.45 blocks per set this season. Offensively, Allick adds 1.80 kills per set on .325 hitting. Allick had a career-high 12 blocks in the NCAA regional final win over Arkansas, the most by a Husker in an NCAA Tournament match during the rally-scoring era. SCOUTING REPORT: PITTSBURGH• Pittsburgh (29-4, 16-2 ACC) earned a third straight trip to the NCAA Semifinals with a 3-2 reverse sweep of Louisville in the regional finals, its second time in four weeks reverse sweeping the Cardinals.&nbsp;• The Panthers rank second nationally in opponent hitting percentage (.138) and third in hitting percentage (.308). Pitt is No. 2 in the nation in blocks at 2.97 per set. &nbsp;• Outside hitter Olivia Babcock was the ACC Freshman of the Year. Babcock leads the attack with 3.61 kills per set and has served a team-high 50 aces.&nbsp;• Setter Rachel Fairbanks was the ACC Setter of the Year. Fairbanks averages 9.32 assists per set.&nbsp;

The attendance of 92,003 set a record for the largest crowd to watch a women’s sporting event in the United States. The crowd of more than 92,000 also surpassed what is widely regarded as the world-record attendance for any women’s sporting event.• The previously recognized world record was 91,648 fans in an UEFA Champions League match between Barcelona and Wolfsburg on April 22, 2022, at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain. Four Nebraska volleyball players were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Teams on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Merritt Beason and Lexi Rodriguez were selected to the AVCA All-America First Team. Setter Bergen Reilly was chosen to the AVCA All-America Second Team. Outside hitter Harper Murray was named to the AVCA All-America Third Team.&nbsp;

The Huskers' four All-America selections brings their nation-leading total to 103 all-time, and it's the most All-Americans Nebraska has had in a season since 2016.&nbsp;

Rodriguez is now a three-time All-American after earning first-team honors in 2021 and second-team honors in 2022. Beason, Reilly and Murray are all first timers.&nbsp;

Four Huskers earn AVCA All-America Honors

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp;– The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.supernovas.com/" target="_blank">Omaha Supernovas,</a>&nbsp;Nebraska’s professional volleyball team in the newly-established&nbsp;<a href="http://www.provolleyball.com/" target="_blank">Professional Volleyball Federation</a>, saw three of its first&nbsp;draft picks&nbsp;in franchise history&nbsp;honored as American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans&nbsp;as announced Wednesday morning by the organization. &nbsp;

Hawaii’s Amber Igiede&nbsp;and Western Kentucky’s Paige Briggs were each named Third Team All-Americans while Sophie Davis of James Madison was selected as an honorable mention.&nbsp;

"It is really exciting to have three of our Supernovas draftees receiving All-American honors," Head Coach Shelton Collier said. "This is an incredible week with our Pro Volleyball Federation Draft, AVCA Convention, and national championships all happening. Igiede was certainly regarded as one of the elite middle blockers in the country and Briggs is highly&nbsp;regarded for her all-around game. Davis was a high achieving, high IQ middle attacker and had a strong season as well. All three were key leaders on high successful teams this fall, and we are excited about having them in the gym with us in January."&nbsp;

Most recently, Igiede&nbsp;became the Supernovas’ first draft pick in team history when she was selected No. 7 overall in the 2023 Pro Volleyball Federation U.S. College Player Draft on December 11. The Louisiana&nbsp;native&nbsp;caps off her college career with back-to-back All-American awards as she was also named an AVCA Third Team All-American after the 2022 season. &nbsp;

Igiede&nbsp;was one of the best middle blockers in the country this last season, winning the Big West Player of the Year award after guiding the Rainbow Wahine&nbsp;to their fourth-straight Big West title. She finished the regular season leading the conference in kills per set (3.79), hitting percentage (.401), points (516.5) and points per set (4.70). The 6-foot-3&nbsp;Igiede&nbsp;ends her college career as the No. 3 middle blocker with 1,371 kills in the NCAA active records list. &nbsp;

Briggs was originally selected No. 5 overall by the Orlando Valkyries, but she was traded to Omaha in a deal struck between the two teams on draft day. It marks the third AVCA All-American award for Briggs, but the first time she’s&nbsp;landed on the third team. She&nbsp;earned honorable mention status last year in 2022 and as a sophomore following the 2020-2021 season.&nbsp;

The 5-foot-10 outside hitter had an illustrious career with the Hilltoppers posting 1,857 career kills&nbsp;and 184 aces which&nbsp;are both third in school history. Plus, her&nbsp;3.55 kills per set career average ranks fifth in program history while her 1,426 digs are eighth. &nbsp;

Briggs saved her best season for last as she was named the Conference USA Alyssa Cavanaugh Player of the Year following a season with 4.00 kills per set on a .330 hitting percentage including&nbsp;a career-high 61 aces and 282 digs. She was one of the key leaders in helping Western Kentucky go&nbsp;30-5 and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2023. &nbsp;

Davis rounds out the trio with her first career AVCA honor after a monster final season with the Dukes. Selected No. 24 overall by the Supernovas in the U.S. college player draft, Davis will go down as one of the best players in program history as she leaves JMU as the school record holder in hitting percentage (.372), solo blocks (136), block assists (447), and total blocks (583). &nbsp;

The 6-foot-2 middle blocker was a force at the net recording triple-digit blocks (139) for the fourth time in five seasons including a career-best 3.07 kills per&nbsp;set on a .355 clip. Davis also continued to excel from behind the service line posting 22 aces in 2023. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native recorded only 15 aces in her first three college seasons before exploding for 49 the past two years. &nbsp;

All five draftees will join the current roster in January as they attempt&nbsp;to make the Supernovas’ final roster. All Pro Volleyball Federation teams will cut&nbsp;down to 14-person rosters ahead of their season openers, with two additional roster spots saved for college draftees for a total of 16 players.&nbsp;The Supernovas will host the first Pro Volleyball Federation match on January 24, 2024, as Omaha takes on the Atlanta Vibe at the CHI Health Center, with the first serve set for 7 p.m.&nbsp;

REAL PRO VOLLEYBALL&nbsp;competition will officially begin in the United States with the Omaha Supernovas hosting the Atlanta Vibe in the first match in league history at the CHI Health Center in downtown Omaha on January 24, at 7:00 p.m. CT. Nebraska supports volleyball better than anyone, as evidenced by the more than 92,000 fans that turned out this season for a collegiate match at the Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium in August, setting a new world record for the highest attended women’s sporting event.&nbsp;

The Louisiana&nbsp;native&nbsp;caps off her college career with back-to-back All-American awards as she was also named an AVCA Third Team All-American after the 2022 season. &nbsp;Igiede&nbsp;was one of the best middle blockers in the country this last season, winning the Big West Player of the Year award after guiding the Rainbow Wahine&nbsp;to their fourth-straight Big West title. She finished the regular season leading the conference in kills per set (3.79), hitting percentage (.401), points (516.5) and points per set (4.70). The 6-foot-3&nbsp;Igiede&nbsp;ends her college career as the No. 3 middle blocker with 1,371 kills in the NCAA active records list. &nbsp;Briggs was originally selected No. 5 overall by the Orlando Valkyries, but she was traded to Omaha in a deal struck between the two teams on draft day. It marks the third AVCA All-American award for Briggs, but the first time she’s&nbsp;landed on the third team. She&nbsp;earned honorable mention status last year in 2022 and as a sophomore following the 2020-2021 season.&nbsp;The 5-foot-10 outside hitter had an illustrious career with the Hilltoppers posting 1,857 career kills&nbsp;and 184 aces which&nbsp;are both third in school history. Plus, her&nbsp;3.55 kills per set career average ranks fifth in program history while her 1,426 digs are eighth. &nbsp;Briggs saved her best season for last as she was named the Conference USA Alyssa Cavanaugh Player of the Year following a season with 4.00 kills per set on a .330 hitting percentage including&nbsp;a career-high 61 aces and 282 digs. She was one of the key leaders in helping Western Kentucky go&nbsp;30-5 and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2023. &nbsp;Davis rounds out the trio with her first career AVCA honor after a monster final season with the Dukes. Selected No. 24 overall by the Supernovas in the U.S. college player draft, Davis will go down as one of the best players in program history as she leaves JMU as the school record holder in hitting percentage (.372), solo blocks (136), block assists (447), and total blocks (583). &nbsp;The 6-foot-2 middle blocker was a force at the net recording triple-digit blocks (139) for the fourth time in five seasons including a career-best 3.07 kills per&nbsp;set on a .355 clip. Davis also continued to excel from behind the service line posting 22 aces in 2023. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native recorded only 15 aces in her first three college seasons before exploding for 49 the past two years. &nbsp;All five draftees will join the current roster in January as they attempt&nbsp;to make the Supernovas’ final roster. All Pro Volleyball Federation teams will cut&nbsp;down to 14-person rosters ahead of their season openers, with two additional roster spots saved for college draftees for a total of 16 players.&nbsp;The Supernovas will host the first Pro Volleyball Federation match on January 24, 2024, as Omaha takes on the Atlanta Vibe at the CHI Health Center, with the first serve set for 7 p.m.&nbsp;REAL PRO VOLLEYBALL&nbsp;competition will officially begin in the United States with the Omaha Supernovas hosting the Atlanta Vibe in the first match in league history at the CHI Health Center in downtown Omaha on January 24, at 7:00 p.m. CT. Three Supernovas draft picks earn All-American Honors

North Platte, Neb. – North Platte Community College avenged an earlier season loss to the Broncos of Hastings College JV, 87-79, on Wednesday night.

Bryce Baez posted his fourth double-double of the season, finishing the game with 21 points to accompany his 11 rebounds. Emmanuel Oladeru also recorded a double-double after tallying 21 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes of action.

North Platte managed to take a 40-30 lead into the halftime break behind 16 points from Oladeru. The Knights had a battle on their hands throughout the opening 14:42 of the half, as each run was challenged by the hot perimeter shooting by the Broncos.

Trailing 30-29, the Knights launched an 11-0 run over the final 2:58 of the quarter to take the lead into the halftime break.

The North Platte lead grew in the opening minutes of the second half, but Hastings rallied to cut the margin to 68-65 with 5:29 to play in regulation. A short 8-0 spurt provided some momentary relief as the Knights went back on the offensive. The Broncos narrowed the margin to one possession before a putback by Parker Baumann pushed the lead to 81-76.

North Platte put the game out of reach by going 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to give Kade Erickson his first win as a head coach.

North Platte (6-6) will close out December with Southeast Community College on Friday afternoon. Tip is set for 2 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

NEW CHS VOLLEYBALL COACH ANNOUNCED

North
Platte, Neb. – North Platte Community College announces that long-time head
coach Kevin O’Connor has stepped down from his head coaching post after 39
years at the helm of the men’s basketball program.

“We
would like to thank Coach O’Connor for his dedication and contributions to the
North Platte Community College men’s basketball team,” said Vice President of
Academic Affairs and NPCC Dr. Jody Tomanek. “His efforts to build successful
teams’ year in and year out elevated the program to historic success.”

O’Connor
is the all-time winningest coach in Region IX, amassing 744 career wins
including 31 winning seasons during his tenure. He guided the Knights to two
NJCAA National Tournament appearances in 2010 and 2013, while claiming 22
Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference titles.

O’Connor
was named Region IX Coach of the Year four times, while also earning NCCAC
Coach of the Year and Omaha World Herald’s Male College Coach of the Year
designations during his storied career. He has coached nine NJCAA All-Americans
and 19 NJCAA Academic Team selections.

O’Connor
began his collegiate playing career in North Platte totaling 659 career points
from 1974-76, before finishing off his eligibility at the University of
Nebraska-Kearney. Prior to returning to North Platte in 1985, O’Connor spent
time as an assistant coach at the College of Great Falls in Montana and the
University of Nebraska-Kearney.

O’Connor
will stay on as the athletic director for NPCC athletics, while continuing to
serve as a mathematics instructor for the institution. 

Assistant
coach Kade Erickson has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the

The Ogallala Indians girl's and boy's teams are making a trip east tonight to take on the North Platte St. Patricks. The girls are 3-1 on the season and will take on a 1-4 St. Pats team. The boy's matchup features the #4 team in C-1, the Indians taking on the #2 in D-1, St. Pats.

Nebraska had a total of 103 student-athletes earn Fall Academic All-Big Ten recognition as announced by the Conference Office on Monday.

The group of Husker student-athletes includes 50 football players, 22 soccer student-athletes, 16 women’s cross country athletes, eight volleyball student-athletes and seven members of the men’s cross country team.

The Husker honorees included three student-athletes who earned a 4.0 grade-point average for the academic year, including&nbsp;Alea Hardie, a cross country runner from Sioux Falls, S.D.,&nbsp;McKenna Lovehaug, a cross country student-athlete from Fargo, N.D., and&nbsp;Abby Vacek, a soccer player from Lincoln.

The 50 football honorees were led by seven players who earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for a fourth time. Lincoln, Neb.-&nbsp;Nebraska men’s gymnastics held its annual intrasquad meet on Friday evening at the Devaney Sports Center with team Scarlet narrowly taking the win by .05 to beat out Cream, 248 to 247.95, respectively.

The competition began on floor, with Cream edging Scarlet, 42.45-41.4. The event was led by sophomore Luke James, putting up a 14.75 on the event. Second and third place was claimed by junior Chris Hiser (14.05) and captain Sam Phillips (13.9) respectively.

On pommel horse, Scarlet beat out their competitors after notching a 41.7 over Cream (40.9). Junior Travis Wong took the event title (14.5), while sophomores Nathan York (14.2) and Toby Liang (13.75) followed closely behind.

On rings, the event was highlighted by Sam Phillips claiming a 13.65. Asher Cohen finished in second place with a 13.45. Nathan York rounded out the top three with a score of 13.1. Scarlet secured the win on rings, 39.8-39.2.

After a well fought battle, the rotation on vault was a draw among both teams, finishing at an even score of 43.9 for the Scarlet and the Cream. Freshman Chase Mondi debuted a glimpse of his skill in the upcoming season after taking the event title on vault with a 14.9. Captain Zac Tiderman notched a 14.85, and Sam Phillips finished in third with a 14.6.

Team Cream took the event victory on parallel bars, 40.45-39.3. Asher Cohen snagged the title (13.5), with freshman Cole Partridge (13.5) and senior Yanni Chronopoulos (13.45) securing second and third spot.

The intrasquad concluded on high bar, with team Scarlet just scraping by with the triumph (41.9-41.05). Zac Tiderman led the Scarlet with a score of 14.25. Sam Phillips took second after notching a 14.15, and captain Taylor Christopulos collected the third position with a 13.85.

Scarlet tops Cream at Gymnastics intrasquad

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp;– The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.supernovas.com/" target="_blank">Omaha Supernovas,</a>&nbsp;Nebraska’s professional volleyball team in the newly-established&nbsp;<a href="http://www.provolleyball.com/" target="_blank">Professional Volleyball Federation</a>,&nbsp;drafted five players, headlined by Amber Igiede&nbsp;from Hawaii,&nbsp;as&nbsp;part of the&nbsp;2023 Pro Volleyball Federation U.S. College Player Draft&nbsp;held Monday in Atlanta.&nbsp;

The Supernovas' draft class includes Igiede, Paige Briggs from Western Kentucky, Maggie Cartwright of Arkansas, Sophie Davis from James Madison, and Auburn's Kyla Swanson.&nbsp;

"Our coaching staff has invested so many hours in preparing for this draft, and we are ecstatic with our selections,” Supernovas Head Coach&nbsp;Shelton Collier&nbsp;said. “Our first pick, Amber Igiede, is no doubt one of the top middle blockers in the country. For us to be able to trade for Paige Briggs, whom we targeted as the most skilled all-around player we really wanted at the top of the draft, was incredible for us.&nbsp;

Our staff loves&nbsp;Maggie Cartwright and Sophie Davis for their energetic vibe and versatility. We are so fired up about drafting Nebraska native Kyla Swanson, who had an amazing high school career in Wahoo. All five players were so excited when we called them to let them know that they were drafted by the Supernovas. They are all going to add tremendous value to our gym immediately&nbsp;in January.”&nbsp;

Omaha added a middle blocker with its first pick at No. 7 overall, drafting Igiede&nbsp;from Hawaii. The 6-foot-3 Louisiana native has grown into one of the best middles in the country as part of the Rainbow Wāhine. For the past four seasons, Igiede&nbsp;has played nearly every&nbsp;match, becoming a star player as early as her freshman&nbsp;season when she recorded 2.28 kills per set on a .349 hitting percentage en&nbsp;route to being named to the 2019 All-Big West First Team along with VolleyballMag.com Freshman All-American honors.&nbsp;

Igiede&nbsp;turned into an elite middle blocker over the next few seasons, with a massive jump coming between her sophomore and junior years. The Baton Rouge native became an offensive focal point during the 2022 season, averaging 3.79 kills per set on a .433 hitting percentage, which ranked No. 5 overall in the NCAA. Igiede’s&nbsp;blocking was one of the best in college volleyball that season as well, recording 138 total blocks for 1.29 blocks per set. The biggest jump, however, came in serving. Coming back to Arkansas for her fifth and final season, Cartwright had career highs in kills (363) and kills per set (2.85) while posting 89 blocks and 36 aces in helping the Hogs reach the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.&nbsp;

Davis improved her play dramatically over the past two seasons as she was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 after recording 148 total blocks, which led the conference. Her .407 hitting percentage was also the highest in school history. Additionally, she nearly doubled her career aces total that season with 27 after posting 15 in the previous three years. Davis was named to the Sun Belt First Team All-Conference in 2023 after recording similar numbers with 139 blocks, a career-high 3.07 kills per set mark, and 22 aces.&nbsp;

Swanson helped the Warriors to back-to-back Class C-1 State Championships in 2017 and 2018 while recording the highest hitting percentage in the state with clips of .488 in 2017 and .462 in 2018.&nbsp;

Swanson committed to Illinois and former Nebraska assistant Chris Tamas, where she would spend the next four years. The 6-foot-4 middle didn’t&nbsp;garner much playing time in her first two seasons, but that changed when she grabbed a starting spot ahead of her junior season in 2021.&nbsp;

Girls Basketball Coaches poll 12-11

Yesterday, Maxwell High School Senior Jocey Cheek signed her letter of intent committing to North Platte Community College for the foreseeable future.

"I've always watched games and have always been around that area," Cheek said, "I loved the experience and general culture at NPCC and I'm super excited to be a part of it."

Cheek joins a Knights squad that finished the season 14-21 and was just one set shy of winning the Region 9 Tournament last season in Columbus.

This past season at Maxwell Cheek finished with 231 Kills, 24 aces, and a team-high 25 solo blocks.

“I’m proud of our guy for an unbelievable bounce back game after a really difficult night in Minneapolis where we could not have played worse in the second half. Give Minnesota credit for the pressure they turned up on us, but I thought we learned a lot from that game. Our guys were locked during the film session the next morning and went out and had two really good hard physical days of practice preparing for a very tough Michigan State team. I thought the second half we got out, we talked about the starts obviously that have been an issue for our team, and to come out and get off to an 11-2 start in the second half and take a lead. They got a little lead on us there late, but for the most part we kept it for the entire 20 minutes. We made really smart decisions unlike the other night, and that’s something I give our guys a lot of credit for is learning from the mistakes we made in Minnesota. We had 12 turnovers in the second half (against Minnesota), tonight we had two. When you get the ball to the elbow, we worked a lot with that, getting movement, getting it to the elbow, cutting, and trying to use pressure against the defense. I thought our guys did a masterful job of getting the job to Rienk (Mast) and continuing with that, doing the things that made us successful.&nbsp; When I look at that box score, obviously Juwan (Gary) and Rienk with the nights they had, but you could argue anybody that stepped on the floor tonight was the player of the game. Eli (Rice) and Matar (Diop) go out and give us huge minutes especially with Josiah out of the lineup today with his ankle. Start to finish, I was just really pleased how the guys went out there and played a complete 40-minute game. Really talked a lot about that, and it couldn’t have happened at a better time.”&nbsp;

On Juwan Gary’s first start of the season and the game overall

“We’ll see. We’ve got a week to make that decision. Juwan’s energy out of the gate was great. It is just exactly what he does when he comes off the bench. It doesn’t change the person or the player that Juwan is. He is going to go out there and compete every time he’s on the floor. Made some huge blocks for us late in the game. Shot looked phenomenal tonight. He had great balance, and great lift, and knocking down shots when he was open. He had a really nice play to Rienk (Mast) after the timeout play. Just really made winning plays all night long. Rienk was an absolute monster on the glass. Got it handed to us the other night. Minnesota was much more physical than us. Again, that was a huge emphasis for us going into this game. Getting back in transition. We gave them too many in the first half, did much better in the second, but transition and rebounding were the two keys and for the most part, I thought we did a solid job.”

On shooting from 50% from the field and team decision making

“We executed. We talked about playing with pace but playing with smart pace. If we didn’t have anything, I thought we did a really nice job of getting into a set, and I thought we executed very well, especially in the second half. I think we were 65%, and that is not easy to do against a Tom Izzo team. We just kept going back to what was working, and I can’t call a timeout every possession. These guys have to go out there and execute. When we didn’t have anything, we didn’t press, we didn’t force, we got the ball where we needed to get it. You look at Rienk with six assists. It showed a little bit of what Derrick (Walker) did for us last year, and again the guys cut and withstood runs. I thought they kept their poise and composure. One thing I was really pleased with our team was how well they were communicating in huddles, and talking to each other, and taking constructive criticism, and then going out and executing. That makes our job as coaches a lot easier when those guys are over there talking about things that they need to figure out on the floor, and I thought our huddles were the best they’ve been all year tonight.”

“Disappointed is the word. There’s some things we did better. Couldn’t believe some of the shots we missed early then made a decent amount of shots. Boys basketball Coaches Poll 12-11

KEARNEY, NE.&nbsp;– The Tri-City Storm’s annual Teddy Bear Toss event at the Viaero Center on Friday night gathered hundreds of stuffed animals to be donated throughout the local community during this holiday season.&nbsp;

Prior to puck drop, more than one hundred stuffed animals were donated through both private and sponsorship donations. These were placed in select seats before the game and given to fans who arrived early for Friday’s event. The Teddy Bear Toss goal was scored by Storm forward Cam Briere during the 1st&nbsp;period of Tri-City’s rivalry matchup against the Omaha Lancers. Following the scoring play, hundreds of teddy bears and various stuffed animals made their way onto the ice as fans participated in the annual tradition. Every Storm player assisted staff members in their efforts to collect the donated items from the ice, and Tri-City went on to win the game by a final score of 4-3. &nbsp;

Stormy, along with several Storm players, will distribute the stuffed animals collected from this year’s event to various charities and organizations in the local community including CHI Health, Kearney Goodfellows, S.A.F.E. Center, Kearney/Buffalo County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA’s), Kearney Children’s Museum, Kearney Regional Medical Center, and Compass. Presenting sponsor Slumberland Furniture will also receive stuffed animals collected at the event and assist in distribution to those in need. &nbsp;

Yesterday, the Storm hosted its annual Paint the Ice event ahead of next weekend’s Concrete Cares game. Members of the local community were encouraged to paint messages of support on the ice at the Viaero Center to support those affected by cancer. The Storm’s home game against the Lincoln Stars on Saturday, December 16th&nbsp;will be played on the painted ice, and proceeds raised during the postgame jersey auction will benefit Concrete Cares, on behalf of Kearney Concrete. Concrete Cares is a volunteer group whose primary focus is fighting cancer on a local level. The mission of the organization is to make a difference in the local community by enabling friends, relatives, and families to join the fight to provide support for those stricken with cancer. Members of the local community were encouraged to paint messages of support on the ice at the Viaero Center to support those affected by cancer. The Storm’s home game against the Lincoln Stars on Saturday, December 16th&nbsp;will be played on the painted ice, and proceeds raised during the postgame jersey auction will benefit Concrete Cares, on behalf of Kearney Concrete. Concrete Cares is a volunteer group whose primary focus is fighting cancer on a local level. The mission of the organization is to make a difference in the local community by enabling friends, relatives, and families to join the fight to provide support for those stricken with cancer. LINCOLN, Neb. -&nbsp;The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Semifinals with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over third-seeded Arkansas Saturday evening in front of 8,713 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Nebraska erased a late five-point deficit to rally and win set one, 26-24. The Huskers then cruised to a 25-14 victory in set two but Arkansas (28-6) battled over the next two sets. The Razorbacks won set three, 25-21, handing the Huskers their first set loss of the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas then led 19-17 in set four before NU rallied for a 25-23 victory.

The Huskers will face No. 4 Pittsburgh on Thursday at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. The match is set for 6:00 pm CST, followed by Wisconsin vs. Texas.The Huskers, who finished 21-0 at home this season, hit just .194 in the match, but Nebraska held Arkansas to a .100 attack percentage. The Huskers had the advantage in kills (57-47), blocks (17-9) and digs (78-62), but the Razorbacks served up eight aces while Nebraska's lone ace came on the first point of the match.Merritt Beason, the NCAA Lincoln Regional Most Outstanding Player, finished with a match-high 19 kills. She recorded a double-double by adding 11 digs and nearly posted a triple-double after finishing with eight blocks, tying her career high. Harper Murray had 15 kills and 12 digs for the Big Red. Bergen Reilly also had a double-double with 40 assists and 16 digs.Defensively, Bekka Allick had a career-high 12 blocks. Her 12 stuffs were the most ever by a Husker in an NCAA Tournament match during the rally-scoring era and were just one shy of the program record for any postseason match. Lexi Rodriguez had a match-high 20 digs to lead the Nebraska floor defense, as five Huskers finished with double-digit digs.Reilly and Rodriguez joined Beason on the Lincoln Regional All-Tournament team.Three Razorbacks finished with double-digit kills, led by 14 from Jillian Gillen.Set 1:&nbsp;Arkansas went up 6-3 after three straight kills. The Razorbacks led 12-6 after a kill and ace by Gillen on back-to-back rallies. Murray and Beason posted back-to-back kills, and Beason and Allick combined for a block as the Huskers pulled within 12-10 after a 4-0 run. Arkansas answered with three points in a row and held a 16-11 lead before a kill by Batenhorst and Arkansas hitting error made it 16-13. However, the Razorbacks restored their five-point lead at 18-13. Back-to-back kills by Jackson brought NU back within three, 19-16, but once again Arkansas had an answer with a kill and block by Gillen to go up 21-16. Murray posted a sideout kill, which brought Kennedi Orr in to serve. From there, Murray terminated again and then added a block with Allick. A hitting error by Arkansas cut its lead to one, 21-20, after the Huskers' 4-0 run. The Razorbacks led 23-21 when a service error and block by Allick and Beason tied the score at 23-23. Beason terminated a kill for the Huskers' first lead since 2-1 and set point, 24-23. An Arkansas kill tied it 24-24, but Beason once again put down a kill to earn a second chance at set point. This time, a block by Beason and Jackson won the set, 26-24.&nbsp;Set 2:&nbsp;Allick had a block and kill, and Beason, Batenhorst and Jackson combined for six kills as the Huskers went ahead 9-2. Back-to-back kills by Jackson and Reilly kept the lead at seven, 11-4. Arkansas cut it to 15-10, but a kill by Beason and block by Beason and Jackson made it 17-10 Huskers. Arkansas got within five again, 17-12, but Beason recorded a kill and Jackson terminated on the slide to make it 19-12 Huskers. Jackson and Murray had kills for a 23-13 lead, and a kill by Beason and block by Allick and Reilly closed the set out, 25-14.&nbsp;Set 3:&nbsp;Arkansas held an 8-7 lead when kills by Allick and Beason put the Huskers on top, 10-8. Back-to-back aces by Gillen put Arkansas back in front, 13-12, but Batenhorst and Murray terminated two straight kills for a 15-14 NU lead at the media timeout. But the Razorbacks responded with a 4-0 run out of the break to claim an 18-15 advantage, and the Huskers used a timeout. A solo block by Murray ended the run, and a kill by Murray and block by Beason and Allick cut it to 19-18. But after a timeout, the Razorbacks got a kill and a block to go up 21-18, and the Huskers called timeout. Beason then tallied her 14th kill, and a back-row kill by Murray got NU within 21-20. The Razorbacks answered with a 4-1 run to win the set, 25-21.&nbsp;Set 4:&nbsp;Nebraska led 9-8 when a kill by Murray brought Orr in to serve again, and she delivered a 4-0 Husker run that put the Big Red up 13-8. Reilly and Allick had a block in that run, and Reilly dumped a kill. A kill by Murray put the Huskers ahead 14-10, but two straight hitting errors and a net violation allowed the Razorbacks within 14-13. Arkansas tied the score at 16-16, but Beason hit off the block and out to put NU back on top. But a service error and hitting error put Arkansas in front, 18-17, and an ace made it 19-17 Arkansas. Batenhorst terminated after a timeout, and a kill by Beason tied the score at 19-19. Arkansas regained a 20-19 lead but the committed a service error and attacking error to give the Huskers a 21-20 lead. Gillen answered with a kill, but the Huskers won the next three points on a pair of blocks and a third Arkansas attack error. The Razorbacks then fought off two match points before a service error sent Nebraska into the NCAA Semifinals.
