Senior forward Eleanor Dale scored her second brace of the season to help the Nebraska soccer team top Missouri, 5-0, at Hibner Stadium on Thursday night.

The Huskers’ (4-0-1) combined 18 goals through the first five matches of the season is the most since also scoring 18 in 2011. Additionally, this is the second time this season NU has netted four or more goals in the second half.

Dale started the scoring for the Huskers as she tallied the lone goal in the first half for both teams. In the 19th minute, Dale continued her impressive senior showing as she recorded her fifth goal of the season and third-straight game with a finish. Dale gathered the ball from a top the penalty box and punched the ball into the top left corner of the net for the game-winner.

After the break, junior Florence Belzile netted her second goal of the season off the assist from Abbey Schwarz in the 49th minute. Then, in the 53rd minute, Dale scored her second goal of the game and sixth in 2023 off the assist from defender Jordan Zade, her fourth assist of the season.

In the 74th minute, senior defender Nicola Hauk recorded her third finish of the season and third-straight game with a score. Sophomore Sadie Waite shot a pass into the penalty box which was headed by Hauk into the back of the net.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To secure the 5-0 victory over Missouri (2-1-1), freshman Kayma Carpenter recorded her first career goal in the 81st minute as she dribbled through the defense and scored past the diving Missouri goalie.

Overall, the Husker offense topped Missouri in shots 14-5 and 11-1 in shots on goal.

In the goal, senior Sami Hauk and Cece Villa combined for the Huskers’ second shutout of the season.

Up next, the Huskers travel to Manhattan, Kan., to face Kansas State on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. (CT). Action will be aired on ESPN+.

Huskers shut out Tigers, 5-0

The Nebraska volleyball team delighted a crowd of more than 92,000 by never trailing during a 3-0 sweep of Omaha on Wednesday night in an outdoor match at Memorial Stadium.

While Nebraska (4-0) was dominant in its fourth straight sweep to start the season, it was Husker Nation who stole the show on Volleyball Day in Nebraska. The announced crowd of 92,003 surpassed the previous world record crowd for a women’s sporting event of 91,648 fans for a 2022 soccer match between Barcelona and Wolfsburg. Nebraska also drew the largest crowd in the 100-year history of Memorial Stadium for Wednesday’s match.

In a day of celebration for Nebraska’s affinity for the sport, the Huskers’ dominant performance was yet another reason why There is No Place Like Nebraska when it comes to volleyball.

Nebraska won all three sets by double digits in its 25-14, 25-14, 25-13 sweep. The Huskers hit .263 for the match while holding Omaha (0-3) to a -.080 attack percentage. Nebraska’s defense limited the Mavericks to only 18 kills on 88 attacks. The Huskers recorded seven blocks while forcing Omaha into 25 attack errors.

Seven Huskers had multiple kills on the historic night. Andi Jackson led the way with eight kills on 12 swings, while Harper Murray put down six kills on 15 swings. Lindsay Krause added five kills on 13 swings. Bergen Reilly had 19 assists, seven digs and three kills while Merritt Beason had eight digs, four blocks and a pair of aces to go along with three kills. Lexi Rodriguez added 15 digs and three service aces.

Set One:&nbsp;Nebraska used a 6-0 run to break an early tie and grab a 10-4 lead. Murray and Krause contributed to the lead by combining for six kills on seven swings. The teams traded sideouts until a Murray ace forced Omaha to call its second timeout with the Huskers on top 15-8. Nebraska then went on a 6-1 spurt to take a 23-10 lead en route to a 25-14 win. Nebraska hit .286 in the opening set while limiting Omaha to a .034 mark. Nebraska’s freshmen combined for seven of the Huskers’ 11 kills in set one – on only 15 swings – while Krause added the other four kills on just seven swings. NU also had three service aces and Rodriguez recorded five digs.

Set Two:&nbsp;Set two was similar to set one, as it was tied early until Nebraska won six straight rallies to take a 10-4 lead and force an Omaha timeout. The Huskers won four of the six rallies after the timeout before the Mavericks called another timeout at 14-6. Nebraska’s lead quickly grew to double digits, and the Huskers closed out a 25-14 on Jackson’s fourth kill of the set and seventh of the match (on 10 swings). NU hit .229 in the second set but the Husker defense limited Omaha to a -.048 attack percentage, as the Mavericks had only six kills on 42 swings with eight errors, including three Nebraska blocks.

Set Three:&nbsp;Nebraska led 5-2 early in set three before Omaha quickly cut the lead to one. But the Huskers answered with a 5-0 run to take a 12-6 lead, as the Mavericks called a timeout. UNO pulled to within four at 15-11 before Nebraska won nine of the final 11 rallies to close out the match with a 25-13 win on a Maggie Mendelson kill.&nbsp;

Jayden Jones used an even par second round to vault himself to a seventh-place finish at the Mount Marty Invite on Wednesday.

Jones paced the Knights in the first round, shooting 80 (+8) to tie for 22nd through the opening 18 holes. He rebounded on the second day to shoot a round low 72, which catapulted him into the top ten. His effort helped propel North Platte to a two-round score of&nbsp;646, which earned them a seventh-place finish in the team standings.

David Winkelmann, Treyten York and Caeson Clarke each bested their opening round scores, as they climbed into the top 35 by the end of the final round.

"It was a good start to the season," said head coach Will Peers. "I'm proud of all the guys for battling when things weren't going our way."

The Knights will continue their fall season on Sept. 19 at the Elks Country Club in Columbus.

Sports schedule for August 29th

Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White met with members of the media following Monday’s practice. White discussed the execution and speed of the defense going into this Thursday’s game and also addressed the flexibility of the defense.&nbsp;

“The young men have done everything asked of them,” White said. “It’s been going well, and it can always be better in terms of the coaching staff, teaching or getting rid of the confusion on my end. The process is still ongoing. We tweaked stuff. We put in new things, but at a certain point it’s about eliminating problems and letting them play fast.”

White discussed what it takes to receive a Blackshirt for this year’s defense.

“Consistency,” he said. “Who’s been the most consistent guy and I think Chief (Borders) stood out. His attitude, his efforts, and again, that’s the cool part when you get to reward the effort. Talent. You put that to the side because all the guys are talented. We’re highlighting the effort and the attitude.”

He also spoke on the versatility of the defense this season.

“Coach Dvoracek has done a great job of moving the guys around,” White said. “He’s done a good job of teaching to the point where Javin (Wright) is starting to show up and make a lot of plays. They’ve been intertwining their skill sets so we can put guys at any one spot during the game.”

The Huskers will return to the practice field on Tuesday as they prep for the season opener on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Minnesota.

White discussed the execution and speed of the defense going into this Thursday’s game and also addressed the flexibility of the defense.&nbsp;“The young men have done everything asked of them,” White said. “It’s been going well, and it can always be better in terms of the coaching staff, teaching or getting rid of the confusion on my end. The process is still ongoing. We tweaked stuff. We put in new things, but at a certain point it’s about eliminating problems and letting them play fast.”White discussed what it takes to receive a Blackshirt for this year’s defense.“Consistency,” he said. “Who’s been the most consistent guy and I think Chief (Borders) stood out. His attitude, his efforts, and again, that’s the cool part when you get to reward the effort. Talent. You put that to the side because all the guys are talented. We’re highlighting the effort and the attitude.”He also spoke on the versatility of the defense this season.“Coach Dvoracek has done a great job of moving the guys around,” White said. “He’s done a good job of teaching to the point where Javin (Wright) is starting to show up and make a lot of plays. They’ve been intertwining their skill sets so we can put guys at any one spot during the game.”The Huskers will return to the practice field on Tuesday as they prep for the season opener on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Minnesota.

Nebraska guard Keisei Tominaga had 17 points off the bench, as Japan rallied from an 18-point third-quarter deficit in a 98-88 victory over Finland Sunday morning in the FIBA World Cup.

Tominaga hit 6-of-9 shots, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, while adding three steals and two assists in 18:35 of playing time, posting a +17 in the minutes he played. Tominaga had 11 of his 17 points in the second half, as Japan outscored Finland 35-15 over the final 10 minutes of action to pick up their first-ever win over a European team in the FIBA World Cup.

With the win, Japan is now 1-1 in Group H and will play Australia for a chance to advance to the next round. That game is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:10 a.m. (central) and will be available on ESPN+.&nbsp; Japan and Australia are both 1-1 in Group H following Sunday’s results, while Germany leads the group with a 2-0 record.

Tominaga is 11 points per game on 63 percent shooting, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range, in Japan’s two contests.

Trailing 71-53 with 2:36 left in the third quarter, Tominaga, who hit a pair of 3-points in the first half, sparked the comeback with five straight points as Japan cut the lead to 10 at the end of the third quarter.&nbsp; He played throughout the fourth quarter.

Tominaga became the second member of his family to play in the World Cup, as his father,&nbsp;Hiroyuki, represented Japan at the 1998 FIBA World Championship in Greece. The event was eventually renamed the FIBA World Cup. &nbsp;Tominaga is the fourth Husker to participate in the FIBA World Cup, joining Tai Webster (2014 and 2019), Jorge Brian Diaz (2014 and 2019) and Bill Johnson, who won a gold medal with the United States in 1954.

Tominaga helps Japan to win over finland at FIBA World Cup

The Nebraska volleyball team moved to 3-0 after a 25-16, 25-23, 25-16 sweep of SMU in front of a crowd of 8,311 on Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers kept their opponent under a .100 hitting percentage for the third straight match, as the Mustangs (1-2) hit .045. Nebraska hit .144 with 38 kills and 22 errors, but outserved SMU with a 4-1 edge in aces and a six fewer service errors. Nebraska had four more blocks (11-7) and 19 more digs (60-41).&nbsp;

Harper Murray led Nebraska with 14 kills with a .310 hitting percentage. She also had 10 digs and was named the most outstanding player of the tournament. Merritt Beason added eight kills and eight digs, and Bekka Allick chipped in seven kills and four blocks.&nbsp;

Andi Jackson had five kills and seven blocks, while Lindsay Krause had three kills and five blocks.&nbsp;

Bergen Reilly posted 29 assists and nine digs, and Lexi Rodriguez notched 14 digs and two service aces. Rodriguez was also named to the All-Tournament Team, along with Laney Choboy, who had seven digs on Sunday.&nbsp;

The Huskers had 38 kills to SMU's 25 and outdug the Mustangs 60-41.

Set 1: The Huskers went on the first run of the game behind two aces from Rodriguez to take a 6-3 lead. SMU got to within one point before Allick and Murray notched two kills each as NU went on a 10-2 run to make the score 18-9. Nebraska rattled off six straight points to get to set point at 24-10 before the Mustangs went on a 6-0 run of their own. The Huskers closed out the set on Murray’s eighth kill of the set to win 25-16.

Set 2: The teams traded points for the first half of the second set. NU scored two straight heading into the media timeout, part of a 5-0 run that gave the Huskers a 17-13 advantage. Kills by Krause and Jackson helped the Huskers make the score 20-15. SMU fought back and cut NU's lead to 23-22 before a Krause kill took the Huskers to set point. With NU clinging to a 24-23 lead, Jackson and Krause ended the set with a block to give Nebraska a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Set 3: The Huskers started quickly in the third set, notching three blocks in the first four points to grab a 4-1 lead. Behind kills from Allick and Krause, NU brought the advantage to 7-2 and forced a Mustang timeout. Murray had two kills and Beason had one in a 4-0 Husker run later in the set that made it 16-7, and the Big Red never looked back. NU pulled away to a 25-16 win for a perfect three sweeps in three matches to start the season.&nbsp;

Huskers finish Ameritas Players Challenge with sweep of SMU

Senior forward Eleanor Dale scored twice in the first half as the Nebraska soccer team topped Gonzaga 3-1 at Luger Field on Sunday.

With the victory, the Huskers (3-0-1) wrap up their trip West with two road wins and a combined nine goals in just two games. Additionally, senior goalie Sami Hauk tallied six saves in her 14th career victory and third of the season.

For the second-straight game, senior defender Nicola Hauk tallied a score as she found the back of the net in the second minute of the game. From inside the penalty box, Sarah Weber gathered the corner kick from Lauryn Anglim and headed the ball into the goal box, which was gathered and shot by Hauk for the score.

In the 23rd minute, Dale scored the game-winner and her first goal of the match as she gathered the errant Gonzaga (3-1-0) pass in the Bulldog backfield, dribbled and punched the ball into the top right corner of the net.

Dale then extended the Husker lead to 3-0 in the 38th minute as she scored again. Hauk dribbled across midfield and shot a pass down the pitch to Maggie Altman. Altman gathered and passed the ball to Dale who sent a sliding shot past the Gonzaga goalie. This finish marked Dale’s 20th career goal and fourth of the year.

Despite the Bulldogs outshooting Nebraska by an 8-5 margin, the Huskers held Gonzaga scoreless in the first 45 minutes and took the three-score advantage into the break.

In the second half, Gonzaga fought back with a goal in the 64th minute by Kate Doyle, but the Huskers were able to hold on and grab the 3-1 victory.

Overall, the Bulldogs held the advantage in shots (17-10) and shots on goal (7-5), but NU led in saves (6-1).

Up next, the Huskers host Missouri on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Hibner Stadium before hitting the road for a match against Kansas State on Sunday, Sept. 3 in Manhattan, Kan.

Both Nebraska Kearney cross country teams have been picked second in the 2023 MIAA preseason coaches’ polls (<a href="https://themiaa.com/news/2023/8/25/miaa-releases-2023-miaa-womens-cross-country-preseason-poll.aspx" target="_blank">women</a>&nbsp;…&nbsp;<a href="https://themiaa.com/news/2023/8/25/miaa-releases-2023-mens-cross-country-preseason-poll.aspx" target="_blank">men</a>).

The league’s head coaches (11 men and 13 women) vote on the makeup of the poll and cannot vote for their own team.

The UNK women, fresh off its’ first-ever NCAA Championships appearance, garnered 130 points and one first place vote. Pittsburg State (139 points, 10 first place) is the favorite with Northwest Missouri ranked third (115).

Last fall, the Lopers were second at the MIAA Championships, fourth at NCAA Central Regionals and 22nd&nbsp;at the NCAA meet in Seattle. Pitt is the defending league champ.

Redshirt junior&nbsp;Grace Bonsall&nbsp;(Kearney) and junior&nbsp;Mara Hemmer&nbsp;(Fremont) lead the way as both earned 2022 All-MIAA honors. Junior&nbsp;Jordan Soto-Stopak&nbsp;(Albion) and sophomore&nbsp;Lexi Liess&nbsp;(Overland Park, Kan.) joined them at nationals last December.

The men were nationally-ranked throughout the 2022 season and finished 22nd&nbsp;at the NCAA’s. They were runners up at both regionals and conference with Missouri Southern the defending MIAA Champ.

UNK tallied 88 points and three first place nods with MSSU (96 points, seven first place) just ahead. Pittsburg State (83) is a close third.

Head coach&nbsp;Brady Bonsall&nbsp;has two returning All-Region qualifiers in&nbsp;Myles Bach&nbsp;(Cedar Rapids, Ia.) and&nbsp;Brett Schoenhofer&nbsp;(Andover, Kan.). Fellow juniors&nbsp;Sam Lueders&nbsp;(Blair) and&nbsp;Payton Davis&nbsp;(David City) also were part of UNK’s seven runners at the national championships.

The Blue &amp; Gold heads to St. Joseph, Mo., next Friday night (Sept. 1) for the first-ever Griffon Twilight meet. The women run at 7 p.m. (5k) with the men going at 7:20 p.m. (6k).

Junior&nbsp;Jordan Soto-Stopak&nbsp;(Albion) and sophomore&nbsp;Lexi Liess&nbsp;(Overland Park, Kan.) joined them at nationals last December.The men were nationally-ranked throughout the 2022 season and finished 22nd&nbsp;at the NCAA’s. Fellow juniors&nbsp;Sam Lueders&nbsp;(Blair) and&nbsp;Payton Davis&nbsp;(David City) also were part of UNK’s seven runners at the national championships.The Blue &amp; Gold heads to St. Joseph, Mo., next Friday night (Sept. 1) for the first-ever Griffon Twilight meet. The women run at 7 p.m. (5k) with the men going at 7:20 p.m. (6k).
