The National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) and the Nebraska Coaches Association (NCA) announced the advancement of 12 coaches and an athletic director as finalists for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association national coach of the year. The nominations were based on each coach’s&nbsp;career accomplishments&nbsp;through the 2021-22 athletic seasons and had not retired more than two years prior.&nbsp; Two former Nebraska prep coaches will be honored by being inducted into the national high school coaching hall of fame as well.

Eight finalists from across the nation, in nineteen recognized sports categories will be honored during the National Coach of the Year Awards Banquet which will take place at the NHSACA’s national convention (merged with the annual NCA Multi-Sports Clinic) in Lincoln, Nebraska on the evening of July 27. The highlight of the banquet will be the naming of the NHSACA national coach of the year in each sports category.

All Nebraska coaches were nominated for this national honor by the Nebraska Coaches Association.&nbsp; The selection is based on the following: career longevity, service to high school athletics, honors, championship years, and winning percentage. The nominees and finalists are evaluated by experts in the field of coaching using sport-specific rubrics to assign points in each category. NHSACA is the oldest coaches association in the nation formed by coaches, for coaches, and has been recognizing national coaches of the year since 1978.

NATIONAL HALL OF FAME:&nbsp;Two Nebraska legendary coaches and contributors&nbsp;Jon Appleget, Fremont&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jerry Bartee, Omaha&nbsp;will be inducted into the national high school coaching hall of fame at the same NHSACA Convention.&nbsp; Hall of Fame ceremonies will take place in Lincoln on July 25.

Girls Sub-District pairings released 

High School Basketball - North Platte High School @ Scottsbluff

North Platte Community College volleyball player&nbsp;<a href="https://npccknights.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/ramsey_morgan_mgni">Morgan Ramsey</a>&nbsp;will move on to the College of Saint Mary in Omaha. Ramsey signed a letter of intent to play for the Flames during the 2023-24 season.&nbsp;

"I chose College of St. Mary because it is a school that has a great athletic program," said Ramsey. "They are always competing at a high level. They are also a school that allows athletes to be enrolled in their nursing program, which is very rare to be able to do both."&nbsp;

The 6-foot, 1-inch outside hitter from Bartlett was one of three Knights volleyball players to be named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-Region IX Team last fall.&nbsp;

Ramsey finished the season first in the region with 3.44 kills per set and second in the region for total kills with 396.&nbsp;

She has been on the President's List at NPCC since arriving on campus, and her 4.0 GPA also landed her a spot on the NJCAA's 2021-22 All Academic First Team list. Additionally, her efforts in the classroom helped the Knights, as a whole, make the NJCAA's list for Volleyball Academic Team of the Year.&nbsp;

"I am really proud of Morgan and excited that she found a place to continue her volleyball career," said Alexa McCall, NPCC head volleyball coach. "Morgan has been a competitor since she stepped foot in our gym, and I know that she has qualities that are going to make her successful at CSM and in her life. She has grown so much in her time here and shown great leadership skills and hard work. I can't wait to see the things she accomplishes."&nbsp;

Ramsey said she has had a wonderful experience at NPCC. She will take those memories with her as she embarks on her new journey in the eastern end of the state.&nbsp;

"Here at NPCC, I have enjoyed how everyone goes above and beyond for you, both as a student and as an athlete," Ramsey said. "The academics are some of the best you will get, and the instructors are always there for help. For the athletic side, we have an awesome coaching staff that just wants you to succeed and be a good person both on and off the court. Our coaches strive to make us into respectful women. We also have a wonderful weights program and that makes all the difference when trying to improve physical skills. I can't say thank you enough to our athletic trainer and physical therapists who make sure I am taking care of my body and for keeping me on the court."&nbsp;

North Platte rallied late in the fourth quarter but came up short in a 44-41 loss to Lamar Community College on Tuesday night.

The Runnin' Lopes jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the opening quarter, but a quick response by the Knights knotted the game up on a corner three by Reece Halley. The Runnin' Lopes halted the momentum shift by capitalizing on their next offensive possession to retake the lead, before stretching the margin to 11-8 on a three by Jolee Ortiz. North Platte continued to hang around until a short spurt narrowed the deficit to one at the end of the opening ten minutes.

North Platte and Lamar combined for just 21 points in the second quarter, but the Knights managed to reverse the momentum late. Trailing 18-13, the Knights steadily chipped into the deficit to eventually knot the game up on a step back three by Noel Warrior.

A steal in the closing minute presented an opportunity for a huge momentum swing, as Warrior grabbed the loose ball and beat the Lamar defender to the paint for the layup. North Platte shut down the Runnin' Lopes offense on their final offensive possession of the period to take the 22-20 lead into the halftime break.

Lamar turned the tides in the second half by first limiting the Knights to just four points in the third quarter. North Platte managed to trim the margin to one possession three times in the final period, but Lamar never relinquished their lead down the stretch and closed out the Knights.

North Platte (6-16) returns to the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on Saturday for a rematch against Southeast Community College. Tip between the Knights and Storm is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Ramiah Adedigba finished the night with 33 points, as North Platte outlasted Lamar Community College 103-102 in overtime on Tuesday night.

Adedigba's point total is his second highest of the season to pace three Knights players in double digits. Bruce Carpenter closed out the game with 27 points on 10-of-24 shooting, while teammate Davion Evans chipped in 16 points, five rebounds and six assists in the win.

The Runnin' Lopes rebounded from the first half deficit to retake the lead in the early moments of the second half. The game remained tight as the margin never exceeded five until the final minute of regulation. A pair of free throws from Adedigba pushed the Knights lead to 91-85, but a 7-1 run capped off by a desperation three pointer in the closing seconds forced the game into an overtime period.

In the extra period, the Knights and Runnin' Lopes exchanged the lead as the early moments featured three lead changes. Aleksa Rudic provided the spark the Knights needed off the bench in the final frame as a follow tip and pullup jumper helped the Knights maintain the slight edge.

Lamar responded with a big three by Abel Maes to briefly take the lead, but clutch free throws from Adedigba in the final seconds proved to be what the Knights needed to earn the victory.

As a team, the Knights closed out the game shooting 46.2 percent (36-78) from the field, including 23-of-32 from the free throw line.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A grappling program that is making a return to greatness saw one of its athletes named Athlete of the Week.

North Platte High School 152-pounder Ryan Smith-Fox was named Nebraska Athlete of the Week (Jan. 16-22) by <a href="https://news.scorebooklive.com/nebraska/2023/02/01/north-platte-star-wrestler-ryan-fox-voted-sblives-nebraska-high-school-athlete-of-the-week-jan-16-22?utm_campaign=nebraska&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;fbclid=IwAR2V4LyTp1atc3dH01HBUGKWgZevfaD7wV-FpVM5COk4VkrRXpfz9ih7itQ">SBLive</a>&nbsp;after receiving over 16,000 votes. Smith-Fox, a Senior, was nominated for the honor following a dominating performance at a tournament in Lexington, where he pinned his first three opponents.

SBLive said Smith-Fox has only had three opponents take him into a full six-minute match, of those, only one was able to keep the scoring margin to less than a major decision.

Smith-Fox, who made an impressive Senior debut with the Bulldogs football team, plans to wrestle at Southeast Community College after graduating from NPHS. Wrestling is one of 14 new sports added to the offerings at Southeast.&nbsp;

Smith-Fox is the number one ranked wrestler in Nebraska at 152 pounds. The Bulldogs were ranked fourth in the latest Huskerland wrestling rankings.&nbsp;

Smith-Fox is having a stellar Senior season, with a 44-0 record, with 36 wins coming by pin. The current NPHS record for pins is held by Gavyn Brauer, with 44 in a season.

Pioneers. The home opener will be May 29 as the Pioneers return the favor for the first of a two-game series. The Plainsmen will

honor all military, veterans and their families at the May 29 Memorial Day game, which will be followed by a spectacular fireworks

show. The evening is presented by NebraskaLand Bank and gates open at 5:30 p.m. at Historic Bill Wood Field.

The Plainsmen will host teams from Kansas, Colorado and Idaho, in a 33-game home season that wraps up on July 26, followed by

a three-game road trip to Hays, Kansas as the season ends with a series against the Hays Larks.

“We’ve been fortunate to have received great response from a number of teams in our region as we put this schedule together,”

Plainsmen owner Chuck Heeman said. “One of our goals in taking on an unaffiliated schedule was to make the player experience a

better one, with fewer and shorter road trips, and we believe we’ve accomplished that. With 33 home games and 18 road games,

and the possibility of adding a few more home games, we should have an exciting second season and build on the success we had

High School Basketball - Sidney @ North Platte High School

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — Brooke Carlson, Elisa Backes, Maegan Holt, Klaire Kirsch and Shiloh McCool do almost everything together.

That includes movie nights and meals at the house four of the five share near the University of Nebraska-Kearney campus, organizing community service projects and excelling academically.

Oh, and they play basketball together. Lots and lots of basketball.

Carlson, Backes, Holt and Kirsch are the top four active players in career games played in Division II. Carlson has played in all 138 games for the Lopers since 2018. Backes and Holt each has appeared in 137 and Kirsch, who missed five because of injury last year, has played in 133. The four are using the fifth year of eligibility the NCAA granted players who went through the 2020-21 pandemic season.

McCool would be right there with them in games played if a knee injury hadn't forced her to take a medical redshirt in 2019-20. She has played in 106 games and plans to return next season.

That players from the same school rank one through four in career games is a quirky statistic, if not an anomoly, considering there are 294 teams in Division II women's basketball.

To coach Carrie Eighmey, it's a refreshing stat.

"With all the conversations there are about the transfer portal and grad transfers and all those kinds of things," she said, "the conversation has shifted (away from) the student-athletes who stay where they're at and invest long-term into themselves and into the program they're in."

None of the UNK players were aware of their distinction until last week.

"It's cool," Carlson said. "I don't think there's ever going to be a circumstance like this again, just with COVID and an extra year of eligibility and all of our seniors coming back. It's mind-blowing, it's amazing and it shows you how much loyalty there is in this program that we all came back to play for these coaches one more year."

Carlson, Backes, Holt, Kirsch and McCool were part of Eighmey's 2018 recruiting class known as the "Magnificent Seven." Two moved on, but the other five became fast friends while living on the same floor of the freshman dormitory.

They come from four different states — Carlson from the Omaha suburb of Elkhorn; Backes from Salina, Kansas; Holt from Council Bluffs, Iowa; Kirsch from Rapid City, South Dakota; and McCool from Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

They gravitated to this middle-of-Nebraska city of 34,000 that advertises itself as the Sandhill Crane Capital of the World for drawing more than 40,000 visitors to the area each spring to view the migration of the exotic birds. Mostly it's a college town, and one with a proud history in multiple sports dating to its days as Kearney State College.

"We have a great basketball team and we like each other," Backes said. "We love the school. We love the coaching staff. You're lucky if you go to a college and find one of those things."

The super seniors were building blocks for a program starting over in 2018-19. Only three players returned from Eighmey's 21-win team the previous season.

McCool said there were times all five freshmen were on the court at the same time, most playing out of position and with little idea of what to do. That first team ended up 15-14.

"Things have definitely changed," McCool said.

The Lopers have followed with seasons of 26, 22 and 24 wins and two NCAA Division II Tournament bids. At 15-3, they're on track for a fourth straight 20-win season.

McCool and Backes are the top two scorers this season and Kirsch is the program's all-time leading rebounder. Carlson and Holt are coming off the bench after starting in previous seasons; they say they had no problem accepting their new roles and never considered not coming back for a fifth season.

"Yeah, it kind of humbles me a little bit, and it makes me think of what are the other ways I can contribute to the team," Carlson said. "Can I be cheering on the bench louder, can I be helping people if I see something on the floor they can't see? It's buying into the team mentality and putting away our personal pride for the benefit of the team and for something greater than ourselves."

Memories made off the court might be more important to this group. Each spoke fondly of their time together, whether it was watching movies or sharing meals, playing cornhole before football games, going to the driving range to hit golf balls, rafting down the Kearney Canal or those dreaded 6 a.m. offseason workouts.

"We've been together for so long and through so much," Kirsch said, "that if one of us decided not to come back, it definitely would feel like a missing piece."

'Loyalty': Quartet of friends atop D-II women's games chart

Sam Griesel and Wilhelm Breidenbach combined for 23 points, but Illinois used a pair of big second-half runs to post a 76-50 victory at Pinnacle Bank Arena Tuesday night.

Terrence Shannon Jr. led five Illinois players in double figures as he finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds. The Fighting Illini shot 45.9 percent from the field and held Nebraska to 37 percent shooting to improve to 11-5 overall and 2-4 in the Big Ten.

The Huskers (9-8, 2-4 Big Ten) pulled within 34-29 after opening the second half with a 6-0 run before Illinois took control. The Illini (11-5, 2-4) used a 21-5 spurt to seize control and take a 55-35 lead.

Nebraska made one last run behind Breidenbach, who scored eight straight points to get NU with 55-45 with 9:09 left. The Huskers eventually pulled to within 59-49 as&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/derrick-walker/44060">Derrick Walker's</a>&nbsp;3-point play with 6:20 remaining capped NU's 14-4 run and got the Pinnacle Bank Arena crowd back into the game.

Illinois answered as a RJ Melendez putback and a steal and dunk from Shannon pushed the margin back to 14, and NU was unable to slice into the deficit.

Early on, it was a defensive struggle neither team could get going offensively. NU led 7-5 after a&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/juwan-gary/44063">Juwan Gary</a>&nbsp;3-pointer with 14:03 left in the half, but Illinois ran off nine straight points over a 3:16 span to take a seven-point lead, at 14-7. Consecutive layups by Greisel and&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/keisei-tominaga/44059">Keisei Tominaga</a>&nbsp;got NU within three, and Nebraska was within 25-20 with 3:52 left in the half before Illinois made a run.
