INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh watched his star-studded defense lead the way in winning last year's Big Ten title.

He needs some new faces to emerge to make it two in a row — and he thinks he has the bodies.

Just four months after losing Heisman Trophy runner-up Aidan Hutchinson, defensive back Daxton Hill and linebacker David Ojabo in the NFL draft, Harbaugh returned to Indianapolis to explain what the Wolverines have in reserve.

“We had a great defense last year," Harbaugh said Tuesday at football media days. “People are asking how we're going to replace those stars? The thing is I've been part of many teams where the no-star defense was the better defense and I've got a sneaky suspicion it could be even better this year, honestly.”

But much has changed around the Big Ten and especially in Ann Arbor since the Wolverines made their first College Football Playoff appearance.

In addition to losing Hutchinson, Hill and Ojabo, defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald rejoined the Baltimore Ravens. Then, for the second straight year, Harbaugh took the advice of his most trusted adviser, his brother and Ravens coach John Harbaugh, and hired Jesse Minter, another former Baltimore assistant.

The revamping and readapting, especially on defense, has become a league-wide routine.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day responded to his first non-title season by hiring defensive coordinator Jim Knowles from Oklahoma State. Injuries, turnovers and poor play sabotaged Indiana’s big expectations last season, so coach Tom Allen replaced both coordinators and decided to start calling defensive plays again.

“I didn't like how it felt,” Allen said. “That's where I cut my teeth as a coach and how I got this job. So we created a system where I'll be calling the plays and Chad Wilt will be the defensive coordinator. To me, it was more of a gut-feeling that I needed to do this.”

The bigger changes may be more evident in the Big Ten West, where the league's more traditional black-and-blue image remains most prevalent.

Iowa, Wisconsin and Northwestern have combined for eight consecutive division titles and have captured 10 of 11 since the league's format was introduced in 2011.

Each team has had its greatest success when balanced, ball-control offenses are paired with stout defenses. The model worked perfectly for Iowa last season and Northwestern in 2018 and 2020 though the Buckeyes won all three title games.

The problem: When things go awry, it can get ugly fast.

“The quickest way to lose games is to throw the ball over your head at Level 3 and we had that happen too much last year,” Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said, explaining his team's 3-9 mark with a lone Big Ten win in 2021. “It's really everybody but we've been pretty solid in that group (secondary) over the years and I think we'll be very competitive there this year."

There is no guarantee Wisconsin, which lost eight of its top 10 tacklers from 2021, or Iowa, which lost three key players in the secondary, will be as strong in 2022.

Michigan State was an impressive 11-2 (7-2 Big Ten) in coach Mel Tucker's second season despite finishing 11th in the league in defensive pass efficiency.

But it's Ohio State and Michigan that will face the most scrutiny this season after being picked to finish first and second in the East. The soaring expectations for Michigan after finally beating the Buckeyes for the first time in a decade only make the stakes that much more important for Harbaugh and his new defensive guru.

“I’d have to go back to before the 2021 season and my brother said you can have Mike Macdonald or Jesse Minter, they’re both great,” Harbaugh said. “So I went back and talked to Jesse Minter and just felt it was the absolute best thing for the team."

One of Thanksgiving's traditional matchups moves to the hardwood this November, as Nebraska will face Oklahoma in the opening round of the ESPN Events Invitational. Nebraska will face Oklahoma at 4 p.m. (central) at the HP Fieldhouse on the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex just outside Orlando. The game will be carried by ESPN and also the Huskers Radio Network. The matchup between the Huskers and Sooners will be the first in men's basketball between the two schools since February of 2011. &nbsp;Oklahoma holds a 104-83 in the all-time series, as the two programs were conference rivals from 1921 until 2011, when Nebraska joined the Big Ten Conference. Under the direction of Porter Moser, Oklahoma went 19-16 and reached the second round of the National Invitational Tournament in 2022. The Sooners return a pair of starters from that team in forwards Tannner Groves (11.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Jalen Hill (9.1 ppg, 5.9 rpg). All three teams on Nebraska's side of the bracket played in the postseason last season, as Memphis and ­Seton Hall are the other teams on NU's side of the eight-team bracket. &nbsp;The Huskers will play either Memphis or Seton Hall on Friday with the start time and TV information determined by the results of the first games in Orlando. Huskers to face Oklahoma on Thanksgiving at ESPN Events Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren talked Tuesday about the conference being bold and aggressive as college sports goes through a period of sweeping change and left the door open for more expansion after the league added Southern California and UCLA.

Warren's opening remarks to begin Big Ten football media days went nearly 15 minutes before he directly mentioned the two Los Angeles schools that announced last month they will be joining the conference in 2024.

“Regarding expansion, I get asked every single day what's next? It may include future expansion," Warren said. “We will not expand just to expand. It will be strategic. It will add additional value to our conference.”

He added: “We are in a perpetual state of evaluating what's next for college athletics.”

Warren also said the Big Ten is in the process of finalizing a new media rights deal that will go into effect next year, with an announcement expected “sooner rather than later." He dodged questions about what it could be worth to the conference but some projections have the Big Ten in position to pay out about $100 million in revenue annually to its schools in the coming years.

He did say USC and UCLA will enter the conference as full members with regards to revenue sharing. In previous expansions with Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland, the incoming members received partial shares of revenue at first.

The West Coast additions will make the Big Ten a coast-to-coast conference. For football coaches, the prospect of making long road trips was not much of a concern compared to the benefits USC and UCLA bring.

Just a year ago at the first in-person Big Ten media days hosted by Warren as commissioner, the SEC dominated headlines with news that Texas and Oklahoma would be leaving the Big 12 for the Southern superconference.

The Big Ten's counterpunch came about 11 months later.

“I thought it was a very smart move for our league to get out in front of any changes that might be happening around the country,” Nebraska coach Scott Frost said.

Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck summed it up succinctly: “L.A.! Are you kidding me? That's perfect.”

Warren reminisced about the days when his family would shop from a Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog and the company's long history in and around Chicago. The third-year commissioner, who received plenty of criticism of the Big Ten's handling of the 2020 pandemic season, said he would not let the conference become an outdated business like Sears.

“Where expansion goes, I don’t know,” he said. “It is important for all of us in business to recognize that were in a time of change. I’m embracing change. I’m going to be very aggressive.”

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Four-time Pro Bowl guard Richie Incognito has retired after a turbulent 15-year NFL career.

Incognito announced the decision Friday at the headquarters of the Las Vegas Raiders. The 39-year-old played his final three seasons with the Raiders. He also had two stints with the Buffalo Bills and spent time with the Miami Dolphins and St. Louis Rams.

While an outstanding lineman, Incognito pushed the boundaries of fair play and was fined numerous times for what was considered inappropriate play. He also was suspended by the Dolphins for misconduct against a teammate and some opponents alleged he made racial slurs.

“After stepping away from football in 2018, I knew if I came back, it’d be to finish out my career on my terms, it also had to be with the right team,” Incognito said during his farewell press conference. “It felt like home the minute I got here.”

Members of the team, including several offensive linemen, along with his agent, family members and team owner Mark Davis gave him a round of applause as he entered the room.

Incognito referenced the “bad boy image” he had acquired during his time in the NFL, which came with a lot of scrutiny in past organizations, but said Davis and the Raiders put their trust in what he could do on the field.

“He created such a fierce leadership mentality amongst these young guys, that he’s teaching them how to become football players and how to become Raiders,” Davis said. “That’s the thing about being a Raider, they’re badasses on the field, but they’re kittens off the field.”

The Raiders signed Incognito in May 2019 to a one-year deal. He started 14 games and earned his fourth Pro Bowl appearance as a reserve. After being extended to a two-year, $14 million contract at the end of the season, he appeared in only two games in 2020 before suffering an Achilles injury that kept him out the remainder of the season.

That contract was nullified in 2021 when he was cut from the team. The team eventually resigned him at a reduced rate for the 2021 season, but a calf injury sidelined him once again for the season.

“I’ve had a lot of setbacks, a lot of adversity,” Incognito said. “That’s probably what I’m most proud of, is coming back from those setbacks and that adversity. From each one of those setbacks along the way, just the learning and growing ... it’s that continued growth and continued improvement that I’ve learned the most about myself.”

Incognito has long been known as one of the most controversial figures in the sport after a series of inappropriate behavior dating to his days with the University of Nebraska.

A third-round pick by the Rams in 2005, Incognito emerged as one of the best at his position. He played in 164 NFL games.

Incognito wants fans to remember his work ethic and tenacity on the field.

“I just want people to know that I played with passion, I played with heart, I played with courage, I played hard for my brothers, I was a total pro, I was dedicated 24/7. Everything in my life was about being a better football player, being a better player, being a better teammate, being a better person,” Incognito said.

The New Jersey native said he would love to get into coaching, especially if offered the chance to come back and work with the Raiders.

Until then, the Scottsdale, Arizona-resident plans on obtaining his MBA at Arizona State, while he continues to support and mentor the Raiders this season.

“I’m forever indebted to this organization for letting me come back and rewrite the ending,” Incognito said.

Knights men’s basketball sign second player from Serbia

A longtime Chadron High School teacher and coach, Curt Holmquist, will soon receive a special coaching award.&nbsp; He will be presented the Ken Cook Award from the Nebraska Coaches Association’s during its annual banquet in Lincoln on Sunday, July 24.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He will be the 16th&nbsp;recipient of the award and the first from west of Lexington. The selection is made by the NCA’s board of directors to recognize coaches “who have made lasting contributions to Nebraska high schools in Girls’ Basketball.”&nbsp;

Holmquist, who primarily taught math, was on the Chadron Schools faculty 37 ½ years and had been the girls’ basketball coach 24 years when he retired at the end of the 2013-14 season with a 316-197 career record.&nbsp;

Nine of his teams qualified for the state tournament.&nbsp; The final three had a combined 68-13 record and each was ranked among the top 10 in Class C-1 by the Omaha and Lincoln newspapers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While he coached girls’ basketball longer than any of the other sports, he also was Chadron’s head volleyball coach five years, the girls’ golf coach 16 years and the boys’ golf coach six years.&nbsp;

In addition, he helped coach track more than 20 years and prior to taking over as the girls’ basketball coach, had been an assistant for four boys’ hoops coaches in a 12-year span. He also was an assistant volleyball coach both before and after he’d been that sport’s head mentor.&nbsp;

After Holmquist had been at Chadron High 34 years, the administration insisted that from then on he should limit his coaching to two sports a year.&nbsp;

A native of Ravenna, Holmquist was basketball team starter as a senior and a three-year starter on the golf team, graduating in 1971.&nbsp; The following fall he enrolled at Chadron State College, but at the end of his freshman year was drafted into the Army.

He returned to CSC in the fall of 1973 and was working in the cafeteria, when he met and before long married another cafeteria worker, Mary Mendoza of Bayard.&nbsp; The couple has three adult children—Dionne, Courtney and Alec. All three were excellent athletes and as elementary students nearly always were bouncing a ball on the sidelines in the gym while their father was directing practices.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Holmquist’s first girls’ basketball team had a 3-14 record, but the Lady Cardinals were 12-9 the next season and made their first trip to the state tournament in March 1992. Sixteen of his 24 hoops teams had winning records.

He took his second team to state in 1995-96, after it had lost 11 games in a row before winning its last two regular-season games and the three district tournament games to earn the trip to Lincoln.&nbsp; The Lady Cardinals were the eighth seed and lost to top-seeded Battle Creek 68-29 in the opening round.

The next year the Cards defeated Bennington in the first round at state and were ranked No. 6 in Class C-1 at the end of the season.

In 1999-2000, the Cardinals did even better, going 19-5 while playing the games at state extra close. They edged Tri-County 59-56 and Superior 42-41 before being nipped by Arlington 36-34 in the championship tilt.&nbsp; The Omaha World-Herald ranked them No. 2 at the end of that season.

Holmquist’s basketball teams also went to state in 2004-05, 2005-06 and the last three years he coached. The 2011-12 and 2012-13 teams won their first games in Lincoln and finished fourth in Class C-1 both years.

&nbsp;All told, nine of his girls’ teams reached the state tournament.&nbsp; Each of his last five girls’ golf teams also qualified for the state tournament.

DENVER (AP) — Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been added to the new Broncos ownership group.

Rob Walton announced the inclusion of Rice in a statement issued Monday on behalf of the Walton-Penner family ownership group. The group agreed to buy the franchise from the Pat Bowlen Trust last month for a reported $4.65 billion. It's pending approval by the NFL.

“A highly respected public servant, accomplished academic and corporate leader, Secretary Rice is well known as a passionate and knowledgeable football fan who has worked to make the sport stronger and better,” Walton said in a statement. "Her unique experience and extraordinary judgment will be a great benefit to our group and the Broncos organization.”

Rice has strong ties to the Denver community. She received her undergraduate degree and Ph.D. from the University of Denver.

The former provost at Stanford University, Rice served as Secretary of State under President George W. Bush from 2005-09. She's also been on the College Football Playoff selection committee and chaired a commission on college basketball.

The new ownership group is led by Walton and includes his daughter, Carrie Walton Penner, and her husband, Greg Penner.

Walton, 77, was chairman of Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, from 1992-2015, when he retired. He is the eldest son of founder Sam Walton and Helen Walton and has an estimated net worth of nearly $60 billion.

Condoleezza Rice added to new Broncos ownership group

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Toniu Fonoti, Prince Amukamara and Bruce Pickens are among six former Nebraska Cornhuskers who will be inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in September.

The Nebraska chapter of the National Football Foundation announced the honorees Monday.

Fonoti, who played guard from 1999-2001 and went on to a five-year NFL career, helped lead the Huskers to two national rushing titles and was a finalist for the Outland Trophy as a senior.

Amukamara (2007-10) was Big 12 defensive player of the year and a Thorpe Award finalist as a senior. He was a first-round NFL draft pick and made 99 starts in nine pro seasons.

Pickens (1988-90) helped lead Nebraska to a Big Eight title and appearances in the Orange, Fiesta and Citrus bowls. He played four NFL seasons after being the No. 4 overall draft pick in 1991.

Other former Huskers to be inducted are tackle Ron McDole (1958-60), linebacker Lee Kunz (1976-78) and defensive back Ric Lindquist (1979-81).

Two other inductees are from the small-college ranks. Darrell Morris was head coach at Nebraska-Kearney from 2000-14 and tight end Ross Wurdeman (1998-2001) was a two-time NAIA All-American for Concordia.

Only individuals 18 and older are allowed to buy tickets. Identification will be required at the time of in-person purchase.

The drawing will be 5 p.m. July 29, and the winner will be notified by phone.

MPCC does not have ownership of the shotgun. Ownership will be transferred from the Gun Gallery to the winner after arrangements are made by the winner.&nbsp;
