Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton's McCormick Endowed Athletic Director Marcus Blossom has been appointed to the NCAA Women's Basketball Oversight Committee for a term of three years. Blossom's term began on September 1, 2026 and will conclude on August 31, 2029.
"I'm honored by the appointment and look forward to serving, advocating for, and advancing women's college basketball in this new role," noted Blossom.
Blossom joined the prestigious 18-member committee that is made up of
4 representatives from the autonomy conferences - 1 from each conference.
3 representatives from the 6 highest ranked non-autonomy conferences.
4 representatives from the remaining conferences.
1 Faculty Athletics Representative.
3 student-athlete representatives.
1 WBCA executive director (nonvoting).
1 vice chair of the Division I Women's Basketball Committee (nonvoting).
1 public member (nonvoting).
Of the 12 representatives of the conferences - 3 must be head coaches - one from each conference category.
During Blossom's first five years with Creighton (2021-present), Bluejay student-athletes have excelled in the classroom and on the field of play, while fundraising numbers and donors have increased substantially. Additionally, Blossom introduced the first strategic plan for athletics, a roadmap that will help Creighton athletics continue to advance forward and maintain its current momentum. He has navigated the evolving iterations of NIL and revenue sharing and has provided the necessary guidance, education and opportunities for Creighton student-athletes, while keeping the athletic department ahead of the curve.
Under Blossom's leadership Creighton programs have made 21 NCAA postseason appearances and finished runners-up for the DI-AAA Directors' Cup trophy in 2023, recording the school's second-best overall Directors' Cup finish the same year. Since Blossom's arrival, Creighton and UCLA are the nation's only schools to reach the Elite Eight in men's soccer, women's volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball. Creighton, UCLA and Kentucky are also the nation's only schools to reach the Sweet 16 at least once in men's soccer, women's volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball in those five years.
Before coming to Creighton, Blossom served at College of the Holy Cross where he was the Director of Athletics for over two years. Prior to Holy Cross, Blossom spent five years at Boston College finishing his tenure as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business and Administration and served as a senior administrator at Providence College. He also worked with the NCAA as an Assistant Director of Championships (2008-10) and Central Michigan as the Athletics Business Manager (2006-08) before being promoted to Assistant Athletic Director, Business Operations (2008).
The Women's Basketball Oversight Committee ensures that appropriate oversight of women's basketball is maintained, works to enhance the development and public perception of the sport, and makes recommendations related to regular-season and postseason women's basketball. The committee prioritizes the enhancement of the student-athlete educational experience (academically and athletically) and, in doing so, promotes student-athletes' personal growth and leadership development.
The Women's Basketball Oversight Committee also supervises qualifications and/or selection procedures for the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship while also reviewing recommendations from the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee and processing other issues related to the administration of the championship. The committee will assume many of the duties of the former NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Issues Committee and will provide direction to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Rules Committee regarding playing rules.
