On Sunday, May 14, 2023, Hershey resident Leonard Current, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 79.
Leonard was born March 18, 1944, to Ted and Christina Current in Stockville, where he grew up. He graduated from Bartley High School in 1962 then worked for several farm families in the area. In 1968, Leonard attended the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis. He (and his future wife) were in the first vet tech graduating class in 1970. Leonard went on to work for the University of Nebraska West Central Research and Extension Center as a vet technician in the veterinary science lab. When the veterinary science lab closed in 2002, Leonard retired.
On May 28, 1970, Leonard was united in marriage to Diane Cannon in Stockville. They moved to Hershey in 1976 and that is where they raised their son, Wylie, and have resided for the last 45 years.
Leonard had a passion for riding and roping. He enjoyed training his own horses and was president of the Lake Maloney Roping Club from the 70's to mid 80's. He had lots of friends and enjoyed catching up with them over coffee at the Kwik Stop in Hershey. Leonard was always telling people how impressed he was by his friends and his son's accomplishments. He will be remembered for his compassion and gentle soul.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Christina; sisters, Arlene Sass and Elaine Current; and Arlene's two sons.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Diane, and son, Wylie Current (Kristin) of Sutherland; granddaughter, Oaklee; and step grandchildren, Dustin, Tyler, Cody, Lauren, Matthew, Madison and Nolan.
Cremation was chosen and a family graveside service will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Sutherland 4th of July Rodeo Committee. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
