Denyse J. Scott (1938-2020)

Denyse Scott, age 82, of Hayes Center, Nebraska passed away at her home in Hayes Center on September 15, 2020.  She was born on January 12, 1938 in Hayes Center, Nebraska to Dennis and Elsie (Tate) Rathburn.  She attended school in Hayes Center and graduated with the class of 1955.  Denyse started working at the local ASC office at the age 0f 16 years, while she was still in high school.

On August 1, 1958, she married VerDon Scott.  Denyse and VerDon were blessed with five children:  Brent, Candace, Roger, Dennis and Mitchell.  The family made their home in Hayes Center for several years before moving to Kearney, Nebraska where Denyse worked at the West Company.  After two years in Kearney, the family returned to Hayes Center where Denyse started a second career, having retired from the ASC office, as a secretary at the grade school until her final retirement.

Denyse was a member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ.  When not busy raising her children and supporting her community through her different jobs, Denyse enjoyed arts and crafts.  Countless people are still wearing her creations or have her artwork on their walls.  She was a gracious and giving person.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband VerDon; and a sister, Martha Gerih.

Survivors include her son, Brent Scott of Wallace, Nebraska; daughter Candance Scott of Ypsilanti, Michigan; son Roger Scott of Hayes Center; son Dennis Scott of Hayes Center; and son Mitch Scott of Hayes Center; sisters Betty Jean (Dean) Mintling of Boulder, Colorado and Jan Breeze of McCook, Nebraska; a brother, Richard Rathburn of Crete, Nebraska; brother-in-law Ron Scott of McCook, Nebraska; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be on Friday, September 18, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. CT at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Hayes Center, Nebraska with Pastor Jean Miller officiating.  Interment will follow the services in the Hayes Center Cemetery.  In honor of Denyse's wishes, there will be no viewing or visitation and the casket will remain closed prior to the services.
