Larry “Woody” Wood, age 80, a longtime resident of McCook, Nebraska passed away November 12, 2020 at Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, Nebraska. He was born in Indianola, Nebraska on October 3, 1940, the second born child to Dean L. and Georgia M. (Seals) Wood. Larry attended grade school at North Star in Frontier County and also in Stockville, Nebraska. He attended Stockville High School for two years before attending Bartley High School in Bartley, Nebraska where he graduated with the class of 1959.
After graduating, Larry moved to McCook, Nebraska where he went to work for State Side Standard Service, K. Don Coburn. He worked at the gas station in McCook for six years. On October 29, 1961, Larry was united in marriage to Mary Ann Beneda at the First Baptist Church in McCook and on September 4, 1962 they welcomed their only child, Penney Ann Wood. In December of 1965, Woody went to work for McCook Public Power District Rea as a lineman. He worked for the district for 29 ½ years before taking a buyout on May 1, 1994 when he retired.
Larry was a member of the National Rifle Association for years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping, wood working, and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1986; father in 1989; daughter, Penney Ann in 1992; and a brother-in-law, Bill Weiss in 2019.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann of McCook; sister Connie Weiss of McCook; brother-in-law, Owen Beneda and wife, Lois Jane of McCook; two nephews; one niece; and many friends.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday afternoon, November 18, 2020 at Riverview Cemetery in McCook with Mike Roth officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 17, 2020 from 10:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. Memorials may be made to the family of Larry Wood for future designation.
