Sutherland, Neb. - Around 30 residents of Sutherland gathered at the American Legion Hall on S. Maple Street on Thursday to celebrate Lasting Legacies, hosted by the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation. The event featured a pulled pork sandwich meal, live music from Sutherland Rascal Martinez, and a presentation celebrating legacies created in Sutherland.
Opening remarks were made by Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation president Dan O'Neill before passing the microphone over to Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation Executive Director Eric Seacrest who hosted a 25-minute presentation highlighting different legacies that have occurred in Sutherland whether it's grant money to the school system, scholarships for students and wrapping up the presentation telling the life of John Rusell Applegate and his grant created following his passing 2003 that benefits teachers and education.
The Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation serves 12 counites (Arthur, Custer, Dawson, Frontier, Hayes, Hooker, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, & Thomas). During the presentation, Seacrest mentioned that the Sutherland School Foundation has received well over $20,000 in funds to benefit the school system.
Students in the region have plenty of opportunities to earn scholarships to help cover schooling. Over $25,000 in scholarship money was awarded to students in 15 awards.
The Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation has awarded over 151 grants totaling over $300,000 for education. Earlier this year, the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation awarded a grant to Hershey Public Schools which used the funds to bring in Justin Matott who is an anti-bullying advocate.
The John Russell Applegate for Teachers Training and Support Grant was created after the passing of John Russell Applegate in 2003. After his passing, he left around $2 million to the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation which created grant funds for education, teachers training, and support. Over the last 20 years, $2.5 million has been awarded in the form of grants or scholarships.
Last year, the community foundation awarded over $300,000 in Betterment grants. Many grants/scholarships are open but get the application quickly as there are deadlines.
