Huskers Fall in Final Minutes at No. 2 Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. – A game-winning goal from Michigan State’s Emerson Sargeant with three minutes left gave the Spartans a 3-2 win over Nebraska on Thursday evening in Big Ten soccer action at DeMartin Stadium.

Nebraska (2-3-5, 0-2-2 Big Ten) turned a 2-0 second-half deficit into a 2-2 tie on goals from Ava Makovicka (72’) and a converted penalty kick off the foot of Ella Guyott (84’), her first goal since 2023. However, Sargeant capitalized on a Husker turnover and netted her fourth goal of the season to give Michigan State (7-1-2, 3-1-0) the 3-2 victory.

Makovicka scored for the second consecutive match, finishing with two shots. Guyott, a Papillion, Neb., native, recorded her first goal since the 2023 season and second of her career.

Overall, Sadie Sant led the Big Red with three shots. Avery Gillahan notched a season-high eight saves in goal for Nebraska.

The Spartans held an advantage in shots (22-12) and shots on goal (11-4).

Nebraska returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 27, with a match against No. 20 Michigan in Ann Arbor at Noon (CT). The match will be streamed on B1G+.
