North Platte is about to get a new reason to lace up skates and roll into fun. Devon Shrum, the organizer behind Spin City, joined us in the studio this week to share highlights from last weekend’s community fundraiser and give a glimpse of what’s coming with the city’s newest roller rink.
The fundraiser, held last weekend, was an all-day event packed with activities for the whole family. “There was a great community turnout, lots of people interested, fun activities to do,” Shrum said. Attendees enjoyed a bake sale, chili cook-off, silent auction, and kid-friendly activities, all accompanied by live music. The event raised $2,500, an encouraging start toward funding Spin City’s opening.
So where did the idea for Spin City come from? “It all started because we don’t have anything like this around here,” Shrum explained. “It’ll be nice to have an environment where people can go and skate safely, learn how to skate, and have fun with friends and family.”
Shrum, a longtime roller derby participant, shared how personal her connection to skating is. “I never really had a place to learn how to skate. Having my own space where other people can learn, whether they’re interested in roller derby or just skating for fun, will be really helpful for the community.”
Spin City will feature a retro 80s neon theme, complete with a smooth skating floor designed for safety and enjoyment. Shrum plans to eventually add concessions, an arcade/game room, and tools to help new skaters stay upright while learning, like balance walkers. Skates will be available for rent up to size 14, and those who bring their own skates will receive a discount on entry fees.

The fundraiser was only the beginning. Another community event is coming up at The Pop Corner on the 15th from 4 to 8 p.m., with a portion of sales donated to Spin City. Fans can also expect t-shirts and more fun activities during the event.
For Shrum, the project is about more than just a rink. “The overwhelming community support so far has been amazing. It’s something we need—a place to get together and hang out,” she said. Shrum’s personal memories of learning to skate on uneven sidewalks and old rinks in her hometown inspired her mission to create a safe, fun, and smooth skating environment for kids and adults alike.
Looking ahead, Shrum hopes Spin City will be a lasting hub for recreation in North Platte. “I know we’ve had a couple of skate rinks in the past that have closed. Bringing this back is a really good idea, and I hope the community is supportive,” she said.
Spin City promises to be more than a place to skate—it’s set to be a space for memories, community, and fun for all ages. Keep an eye on Spin City’s Facebook page for updates and details about upcoming events.
