– The Sioux Falls Cougars scored off a corner kick six minutes into the action to down Nebraska Kearney, 1-0, Sunday in South Dakota.
USF moves to 2-1-0 while the Lopers fall to 2-1-1. The game was delayed midway through the first half due to lightning.
At the time of that stoppage, it was already 1-0 on the scoreboard as senior Kate Stratman knocked in a corner taken by junior Lily Dahler. Her kick landed in the box with two teammates not heading the ball. However, the ball bounced to Stratman who then found the right corner of the Loper goal.
UNK had two more shots on goal than USF, 8-6, but nothing got past keepers Delani Daubman (five saves) and Morgan Jost (three saves) who each played a half. The Lopers out shot the Cougs by a 7-3 margin over the first 45 minutes with the home team returning the favor after the break, 10-4. USF also had an advantage in corners, 5-2.
Freshman Bella Spadavecchia (Greenville, S.C.) had three shots, two on goal, to pace UNK with junior Ka'iulani Nishigaya (Waipahu, HI) and freshman Vanna Reitsman (Papillion) at two shots apiece. Finally, keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln) made five saves.
The Lopers head to Denver next weekend to battle the Regis Rangers (2-2-0) and Colorado Christian Cougars (1-1-1; played at UH-Hilo Sept. 6).
