SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. - Recent Western Nebraska Community College graduate Jordon Underwood of Oshkosh was named a Distinguished Chapter Member by Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society.
The awarded members are selected based on a student's embodiment of the Hallmarks of the Society through active participation in their chapter. It is awarded to students with exceptional leadership, scholarship service, and fellowship with their chapter and community. Only 30 students are recognized nationwide.
"It was a great honor I got the ability to receive a medallion for this award," Underwood said. "I was really thankful for friends, family, professors, and the PTK organization for this award."
In addition, he was also the recipient of the Board of Governors Award at the WNCC Student Award Ceremony in late April. This is the highest award conferred by WNCC, given to an outstanding graduating sophomore who best exemplifies the qualities of excellence in academics, leadership, and service to the college and the community.
During his time at WNCC and through his college project through PTK, Underwood spoke with students from area high schools about his experiences and the role that WNCC specifically played in his education.
"PTK and WNCC have made a big difference in my life," Underwood said. "I got the ability to meet new people and develop friendships that will last forever."
Underwood received his associates degree in May and plans to continue his education next fall at Chadron State College to pursue a bachelor's degree in elementary education.
