Sargent, NE – David John Thompson age 61 of Sargent, NE went to meet Jesus, on January 7, 2024, at the CMCH in Burwell.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.

David was born January 28, 1962, in Guide Rock, NE to Anna Margaret Mann and Jack Hudson Thompson, Jr.

He lived a life of many adventures. He went to stay with his uncle Keith Pair in Mankato, KS, helping on the farm. He raised one baby pig who had a litter that he sold and bought a “1970 RT Challenger-pearl white” and “it was on”!

He also worked the farm of his grandfather, Evertt Mann, near Alliance, NE. He visited the Thompson White Horse Ranch on the Niobrara River near Stewart, run by his Aunt Ruth, the widow of his father’s twin brother Cal.

He went to Phoenix, where his dad was living. There he started and ran a landscaping service for several years.

He was in Hastings building grain elevators when he met Tami (Hansen). They moved to Sargent and were married on August 18, 2000.

David loved animals, gardening, cooking, and antiques. Dave was on the Board of Directors of the Junk Jaunt for several years. He promoted it all the time, earning the nickname Junk Jaunt King from Colleen at the local news station. Dave also promoted the Memorial Weekend flea market, moving it to Sargent to give the vendors a show to do and to give the small town of Sargent a boost.

September 30, 2019, Dave had a hemorrhagic stroke. At that time only 1% of hemorrhagic stroke victims lived, and typically only for 1 year. He was flown from Ord, NE to Kearney ICU. They did surgery to drain blood from his brain and then sent him to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. Miraculously he relearned to walk, to talk, to swallow, and to eat, but he was left with severe short-term memory and some long-term memory impairment. He was at home with his wife until he fell, breaking a hip on September 1, 2022. At this time, he made his home at a nursing home. After 2 more surgeries for broken hips, he lost his battle on January 7, 2024.

Dave is survived by his wife Tamara (Tami) Thompson, his children Nathan Brown of Sargent, Dustin (Brandi) Hinrichs of Hastings, Kristina Leggion (Jeremy) Finnerty of Geismar, LA, Jeff (Hannah) Selko, and Jason (Valerie) Selko of Sargent, grandchildren Jordon, Codi, and Kassia Hinrichs, Zoe Leggion, Eberlie and Kendri Selko, Alexa Ostrander, and great-granddaughter Amelia Hinrichs. Survived also by his siblings Melody (Lloyd) Smith, Daniel Wondercheck, Judy (Joe) Jones, all of Abilene, KS, Alta (Jay) Smutz of Salina, KS, and Hope (Ralph) Powell of Abilene, KS.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather Donald Reed of Abilene, KS.
