Norma Jean Cochran

Norma Jean (Nelson) Cochran age 79 of McCook, passed away at her home on April 28, 2023 with her family surrounding her.  She was born in Denver, CO on July 14, 1943, to Richard and Jean (Grindinger) Nelson. She attained her GED.

Norma was united in marriage to Harley McNeil Cochran on June 20, 1959. To this union four children were born: Steven, Bradley, Lori, and Karen.  Harley preceded her in death on February 18, 2016.  She was employed for 25 years as an aide at the Hillcrest Nursing Home of McCook, retiring in 2008.

The Cochran home had an open door policy, friends and neighborhood kids were always welcomed, they seldom rang or knocked.  Norma was a good listener to all who came by. She was a Prayer Warrior for anyone that asked her to pray for them or had any special intentions. She always wanted to know the name and used it in her prayers. She enjoyed going out and watching the moon and the stars. In recent years, her Sunday ritual was to go to Wendy’s for a junior bacon cheeseburger with a small frosty.  Norma enjoyed the daily calls from her kids and would make them feel guilty when they were lax in calling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Jean; husband, Harley; sister, Carole Mayhugh; sisters-in-law, Dixie Wisehart and Barb Grundmayer; brother-in-law, Fred Cochran; nephews, Rich Nelson and Todd Wisehart.

Norma is survived by her children, Steven (MaryKay) Cochran of Kearney, Bradley (Melanie) Cochran of Imperial, Lori (Jim) Stull of McCook, Karen Cochran of McCook; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; brothers, Rick (Hanneke) Nelson of Delta, CO, Andy (Jody) Nelson of Conifer, CO and brothers-in-law Larry Wisehart of Russell, KS and Sonny Mayhugh of Great Bend, KS.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023, at the Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook, officiating will be Rev. Trevor Smith.  Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery of McCook.  Memorials may be left in Norma's name to the Community Hospital Hospice and Home Care.
