Mary Jane Cohn, 97, of North Platte, NE passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at Linden Court.

Mary was born on March 20, 1927 in North Platte, NE the daughter of Clarence and Fern (Greeley) Stearns.  

Mary grew up and attended school in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School.  She married Wilbur “Shorty” M. Cohn on October 13, 1946 in Oberlin, KS and together they had 5 children.  Mary was a member of the First Christian Church, Moose Club, Eagles Club, Old Timers, RSVP, R&R, and the Shriner’s Auxiliary all in North Platte.  She and her husband Shorty did a lot of traveling and camping over the years.  She volunteered in recent years with the Thrift Center and Great Plains Health Hospital.

She is survived by her children, Dennis Cohn of Topeka, KS, Larry (Shirley) Cohn of North Platte, Kathy (Steve) Mentzer of North Platte, and Dannie Cohn of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Wendi, Brandon, Alicia, Melissa, Tracy, Cindy, Travis “T.J.”, Jeremy, Amber, Daniel, Nicole, Ashley, and Savannah; 26 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; sisters, Claire Shields and Shirley Simpson both of Omaha; sister in laws, Jean Stearns of North Platte, and Laurel Cohn of Grand Island; daughter in law, Brenda Cohn of North Platte; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Fern; in laws, Eva and Harry Cohn; husband, Wilbur “Shorty”; son, Verlyn; brothers, Clarence and Butchy Stearns; brothers and sisters in law, Bud Cohn, Doris and Harold Bayne, Velva Cohn, Harry and Harriet Ellis, Esther Jackson, Lee Cohn, Ted and Lois Cohn, Forrest Shields, and David Simpson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 27, 2024 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jeremy Rinke officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.  Carpenter Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
