OGALLALA, Neb. — Quarter Horse racing returns to Lake Mac Racetrack this weekend as the track hosts its second season of live racing on Friday and Saturday.
The two-day event will feature eight races, with four races scheduled each day beginning at 3 p.m. Mountain Time. More than $170,000 in total purse money will be awarded during the weekend.
Cynthia Smith, director of racing at Lake Mac Racetrack, said the growing purse is a sign of the event's continued success in western Nebraska.
"We are building something that western Nebraska can look forward to each year and continue to draw spectators and horses throughout the country to grow Quarter Horse racing in Nebraska," Smith said.
Nebraska-bred Quarter Horses will take center stage throughout the weekend, including races offering $30,000 purses. Each of those races includes a $20,000 purse with an additional $10,000 contributed by Adams Bank & Trust.
Beyond the racing action, organizers have planned activities throughout the weekend for visitors. Saturday morning will feature "Morning Thunder: Jockeys & Java," giving fans an opportunity to meet jockeys before the races. Guests can also enjoy VIP race day giveaways, live music, food vendors and Family Day at the Races on Saturday, where attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite Derby hats.
Fans will also be able to place wagers on the live races as horses compete in the high-speed, short-distance events Quarter Horse racing is known for.
The race meet is presented in partnership with the Nebraska Quarter Horse Racing Association, which works to promote and preserve Quarter Horse racing across the state.
Following each day of racing, entertainment will continue inside Lake Mac Casino Resort with live music. The casino's live table games pit, featuring blackjack and Texas Hold 'em, will also be open for guests.
