NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A North Platte man was sentenced Monday to up to 30 years in prison in connection with the 2023 shooting of a 12-year-old child.
Brandon Girkin, 38, was arrested in December 2023 and pleaded no contest in March to four felony charges, including use of a firearm to commit a felony, second-degree assault, and two counts of attempted assault on a peace officer.

On Monday in Lincoln County District Court, Girkin was sentenced to between 20 and 30 years for the firearm charge, 8 to 13 years for the assault charge, and 10 to 15 years for each of the attempted assault on a peace officer charges. All sentences will run concurrently.
The shooting prompted a large law enforcement response in North Platte and left the young victim hospitalized. Girkin was taken into custody without further incident.
