NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The FNBO Chili Cook-Off filled the bank’s parking lot with the smells of simmering pots, the sound of laughter, and plenty of hometown pride Friday, all to raise money for Mid Plains United Way.
The lunchtime tradition, held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., gave locals a chance to sample creative chili recipes and cast their votes while cheering on businesses that went all-in on themes and costumes.
Dayspring Bank stirred up victory with its Pork Green Chili, earning the title of Best Chili. Lashley Land Residential ladled their way into second, while Two Brothers Yak Chili (sponsored by Bow Creek Ranch) took third.
Of course, the competition wasn’t just about taste—it was also about flair. Lashley Land Residential won Best Booth with their cheeky “Make Chili Great Again” theme. Title Services of the Plains claimed second place, while the “Spice Girls” booth from Trego Dugan Aviation added some pop-star fun for third.
The biggest laugh of the day? The Pie in the Face showdown. FNBO Director, Agribusiness Relationship Manager Aaron Weismann was one of four nominees, raising the most money and ultimately winning the pie to the face. A spirited auction turned his good-natured sacrifice into another $60 for United Way. One well-aimed throw later, and laughter filled the parking lot.
Organizers say the event brought out the best of North Platte: a little friendly rivalry, a lot of chili, and strong community support for a good cause.
