OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men’s tennis team racked up seven wins at the Creighton Invite before splitting duals with Northwest Missouri State and Washburn on Sunday. The Bluejays completed a 5-0 sweep of the Bearcats on Sunday morning before falling to Washburn, 5-2, in the afternoon.
Creighton opened the weekend with six singles wins from five different Bluejays during the Creighton Invite, while the duo of Neil Saxer and Timothee Lustig combined for a 6-3 doubles win over Omaha’s Kaeden Taylor and Kristian Thomas.
Mathis Dahler claimed a 6-4 singles win over Omaha’s Pavan Uppu on Friday, while Saxer (7-6 (8-6), 6-1), Jack McMahon (6-4, 6-1) and Lucas Mommessin (6-3, 3-6, 10-7) each picked up victories on Saturday. Maxime Grunig, meanwhile, captured singles wins over Northwest Missouri State’s Carlos Doria (6-4, 6-3) and Washburn’s Gael Mourmant (6-4, 2-6, 10-7) to close out play at the Creighton Invite.
Creighton then improved to 2-0 this season in dual matches with a 5-0 sweep of Northwest Missouri State on Sunday morning.
The Bluejays earned the double point with a pair of 6-3 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Rocky McKenzie and Dahler teamed up for the victory at the top doubles positions, while Lustig and Mommessin combined for the win on the No. 3 doubles court to give the Jays a 1-0 advantage.
Creighton then tallied straight set victories on the No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles courts to earn their second sweep of the season. Sebastian Papp got the Bluejays started with a 6-1, 6-3 win on the No. 4 singles court, while Lustig posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the top singles spot to put the Jays up 3-0.
McKenzie followed with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph on the No. 4 singles court to clinch the overall dual, before Mommessin closed out the sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 singles spot.
Creighton would then suffer its first loss of the season, falling to Washburn, 5-2, after battling for nearly three hours.
Washburn earned Sunday’s doubles point with a 6-2 win at the No. 1 doubles position and a 6-3 triumph at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The Ichabods then secured the overall dual win with straight set victories at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions.
Saxer and Mommessin earned Creighton’s only wins in the match, claiming a pair of three-set victories on the No. 2 and No. 5 singles courts. Saxer edged out Miyagawa, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 10-5 on the No. 2 singles court, while Mommessin battled his way to a 6-1, 5-7, 10-5 victory over Petr Leipner on the No. 5 singles court.
Creighton returns to the court on Saturday, Oct. 3 for the Drake Invite in Des Moines, Iowa.
