Joy Marie Steel of North Platte, Nebraska, passed away Friday, November 27, 2020 in North Platte. She was born December 20, 1933, in Sutherland, Nebraska to Simon & Wilda (Chase) Binegar.
She attended school in Sutherland for nine and a half years. The family then moved to North Platte where she attended North Platte Senior High and graduated in 1951. On February 17, 1951, she married Wesley E. Steel in Ogallala, Nebraska. They lived on the Steel Ranch, northeast of North Platte, for 59 years until Wesley’s passing, where they raised their five children.
Joy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, & friend. She enjoyed spending time with her family & friends. She loved to dance and play cards. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, and baking. She was a member of the Hall School Mothers’ Club, a 4-H Club leader, a timer for the Lake Maloney saddle club, a member of a bowling league & and active in the DAR & Christian Women’s Club.
She is survived by her children, Karen (Mark) McVey of Haigler, NE, Patricia Correll of Mitchell, NE, Eddie (Susan) Steel of North Platte, NE, and Sherri Britton of Lewellen, NE; grandchildren, Brian (Terra) McVey of Metamora, Illinois, Clay (Kellyn) McVey of Haigler, NE, A.J. (Krystal) McVey of Lincoln, NE, Travis Correll of Des Moines, Iowa, Ty (Kelly) Correll of Torrington, Wyoming, Brandi Tillman of North Platte, NE, Charles (Lori) Steel of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Patricia Steel of Lincoln, NE, Jennifer VanderWey, Kelly (Justin) Loeffler of Cheyenne, Wyoming; great-grandchildren, Jack & Grant McVey, Paislee & Charlee McVey, Drew & Lyndee McVey, Conner Correll, Jayden & Carlee Tillman, Bradley & Aubrey Steel, Shyla Stearns, Isabelle & Hayden Loeffler; sisters, Dona Samuelson of Chester, Oklahoma & Lois Burch of Riverton, Wyoming; brothers, Marvin Binegar of Oregon City, Oregon & Bill Binegar of North Platte; sister-in-law, Marie Grasz of North Platte, & many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wesley; son, Mike Steel; parents-in-law, Edd & Janie (Powell) Steel; grandson, Clint VanderWey; great-grandsons, James & Jed VanderWey; sister, Lola Wurl; brothers-in-law, Bill Burch, Kenneth Wurl, Harvey Grasz, Richard Samuelson; & sister-in-law, Shirley Binegar.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at North Platte Cemetery. Book signing will be from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2020 with family receiving friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte, NE which is in care of arrangements. The service will be live streamed on Adams & Swanson Facebook page for those not able to attend.
