Patrol: 2 Lincoln men killed in plane crash near Maxwell

The Nebraska State Patrol has preliminarily identified the victims of a plane crash that occurred Wednesday near Maxwell.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The two occupants are believed to be Adam Helmerichs, 41, of Lincoln, and Zachary Clausen, 22, of Lincoln. Next of kin has been notified and both families have confirmed that the two were traveling together. Helmerichs was the pilot.

Final positive identification is pending additional investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash itself.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Authorities have confirmed that one person died following a plane crash between North Platte and Maxwell on Wednesday.

Emergency personnel, including the North Platte and Maxwell Fire Departments, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, and Nebraska State Patrol, responded to the report of a plane crash near Mile Marker 185 on Interstate 80. 

Initially, the call was reported as a grass fire. Responding personnel discovered upon arrival that a plane had crashed.

Officials said at least one person is dead, and the aircraft is a total loss. 

No further information was released. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash. 

More information is expected to be released following the notification of next-of-kin.
