OGALLALA, Neb. — Western Nebraska residents will have an opportunity to learn more about native landscapes, buffalo grass and local history during a free PlantNebraska event planned for Wednesday, September 30, in Ogallala.
The “Trees, Prairie & Community” event will include a guided tour of Tri-Trails Park followed by a presentation on buffalo grass, prairie seeding and waterwise landscaping. Both activities are free and open to the public, although advance registration is required.
The morning will begin with a guided tour of Tri-Trails Park from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. The park is located about one mile south of West County Road 80, off Lawrence Road.
During the tour, participants will learn about the three historic trails that intersect at the site: the Oregon Trail, Pony Express Trail and Great Western Cattle Trail. The tour will also highlight the park's collection of trees and plantings, waterwise landscape improvements, historic markers and ongoing stewardship efforts.
The second portion of the event will take place from 11 a.m. to noon at the Arteburn Youth Center, 305 W. 10th St.
PlantNebraska Sustainable Landscape Specialist Brad Kindler will discuss planting and maintaining buffalo grass, establishing prairie landscapes and approaches to creating more waterwise landscapes in western Nebraska.
PlantNebraska says the event is designed to bring together local history, trees, native prairie landscapes and practical information for residents interested in more sustainable landscaping.
