Richard Rudolph Lutz, 92, of Sutherland, passed away February 29, 2024 at Great Plains Health. He was born February 1, 1932 to Emil and Katherine (Wirth) in Wyoming, Nebraska.

Richard graduated from Avoca High School and farmed for a short while before enlisting in the United States Army. After his discharge, he married Ruth Elizabeth Canaway on June 4, 1955. The couple farmed North East of Nebraska City. Richard opened a mechanic shop in Nebraska City. They moved to Omaha in 1962 and Richard was body shop foreman for HP Smith. On June 8, 1969 they moved to Sutherland and he worked for John Hurt Chevrolet. While living in Sutherland he coached the high school trap team for about 20 years. Richard went to work at the Sutherland Power Plant from 1972- 1979. He started a shop in Sutherland called Dick’s Services and ended his working career at Big Mac Diesel.

Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapshooting, and the outdoors. He will be remembered for the family fishing trips to South Dakota. Family was the center of his life and he very much enjoyed his grandchildren. Richard was known to enjoy Strawberry Hill wine.

Survivors include children, Dick (Kelly) Lutz of Sutherland, Paul (Laurie) Lutz of Sutherland, Teresa McKinney of Lincoln, John Lutz of Sutherland; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; brother, Emil Jr. (Mary Ann) Lutz of Lee Summitt, MO; sisters, Carolyn Newkirk of Tecumseh, Jane Kates of Broomfield, CO; numerous other family members and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Katherine; wife, Ruth; children, Elizabeth, Margie, Peggy and Mark; sister, Kathy (Richard) Sheldon; brothers-in-law, Mike Conaway, Kenny Kates, and Lawrence Newkirk; daughter-in-law, Kendra; grandchildren, Mark and Brittnay.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland with the Reverend Vidya Sagar Arikotla as celebrant.  Rosary will be held 7:00 P.M., Friday, March 8, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Those wishing to sign the book may do so noon- 5:00 P.M., Friday, March 8, 2024 at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
