Alvin E. Blumanhourst (1929-2021)

Alvin E Blumanhourst, age 91, of Cozad, Nebraska died Friday May 14, 2021 at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, Nebraska following a prolonged illness.

Alvin was born on November 18, 1929 at Sumner, Nebraska to Alfred and Rachel Blumanhourst. Alvin attended school and graduated from Sumner High School with the class of 1947.

After graduation Alvin farmed with his father until October 1951 when Alvin was drafted and volunteered to join the Marine Corps. Alvin served 2 years during the Korean conflict with 13 months spent in Korea.

Alvin married Doris Ester Furby at Amherst, Nebraska on December 16, 1951. Alvin and Doris lived in Southern California while he was stationed stateside in the Marine Corps.

After the service, Alvin returned to Nebraska and worked in various agricultural pursuits until he started at Farmland Service CO-OP in Gothenburg.  Alvin lived on a farm north of Gothenburg where he farmed and raised livestock while continuing to work for CO-OP. In 1979 Alvin and Doris moved to Cozad where he managed the CO-OP Fertilizer Plant until his retirement in 1992.

After retirement Alvin worked part-time at various jobs including Cozad Police Department dispatch, Cozad Country Club, and Farmland Service CO-OP. Alvin and Doris spent many winters at the Split Rail RV Park in Mission, Texas.

Alvin was a member of the Cozad Country Club, VFW, American Legion, and an active member of the Honor Guard for 65 years.

He enjoyed golfing, cards, and playing pool.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Doris; sons Edward Blumanhourst of Cozad, Nebraska and Dale (Regina) Blumanhourst of Valley Center, Kansas; daughter Crystal (Rick) Graves of Robins, Iowa; grandson Benjamin (Samantha) Blumanhourst of Valley Center, KS; granddaughters Sandra Blumanhourst of Lincoln, NE and April Graves of Robins, IA; great-grandsons Kade, Asher, and Liam Blumanhourst of Valley Center, KS; sisters Nora Dyer of Kearney, NE, Elsie Dockweiler of Central City, NE, and Doris Dockweiler of Hooper, NE; and brother Dean (Lorraine) Blumanhourst of Lincoln, NE.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Alfred Blumanhourst.

Memorials are suggested to the Cozad VFW Post 890.

Services will be held Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel in Cozad, Nebraska. Burial with Military Honors will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, Nebraska.

Visitation with family present will be Tuesday June 1, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad, NE.
