Knights drop doubleheader to McCook

McCook, Neb.  – North Platte fell to Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference leader (RV) McCook Community College in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

The Indians opened up the scoring with three runs in the first inning and a five run second inning.

North Platte got two runs back in the top of the fourth inning by kick starting the frame with back-to-back singles from Victoria Arellano and Heaven Hutchison. Hutchison’s single moved Arellano into scoring position and a sacrifice fly to right field plated the first run of the game.

McCook retired the next two batters before an error by the shortstop allowed Hutchison to score. Paige Warren struck out the next North Platte batter and limited the Knights to just one more hit over the next three innings to close out the win. 

Sheena Smith went the entire way allowing eight runs on seven hits, while striking out two in six innings of work.

McCook continued their momentum into the second game while jumping out to a 16-0 lead in the opening four innings. Strong pitching held the Knights offense without a hit, as Lexi Knapp and Olivia Moorhead combined to retire six North Platte batters.

Alieze Moreno pitched 2.2 innings in the loss. She allowed eight runs on six hits and struck out two.

Knights (4-14) return to Region IX action on April 1 against Central Community College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Dowhower Softball Complex in North Platte.
