A North Platte man is in custody for raising Cain and leading police on a pursuit to Raising Cane's.

At around 8:44 p.m. on Monday, an officer with the North Platte Police Department attempted to perform a traffic stop on a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer for speeding in the 1800 block of West Ninth Street.

According to police, the driver, later identified as Gabriel Sardina, failed to stop and continued to travel at speeds up to around 40 mph in a residential neighborhood.

Investigator John Deal says the pursuit eventually made its way to Rodeo Road where Sardina began traveling eastbound at speeds of around 75 mph. The posted speed limit on Rodeo Road is 35 mph.

Police say Sardina eventually turned southbound on North Willow Street, then eastbound on A Street to Jeffers Street where the vehicle made a right turn and began traveling southbound, violating numerous traffic laws.

After traveling southbound on Jeffers, officers say Sardina turned into the parking lot of Raising Cains, 1304 South Jeffers, and came to a stop. Sardina was taken into custody without further incident. A search of the vehicle revealed prescription drugs for which Sardina did not have a prescription. Investigator Deal says the pills are not a controlled substance but do require a prescription.

Following further investigation, officers determined that Sardina took the vehicle to Raising Cane's because he wanted a friend who works there to take possession of it. Sardina also indicated to officers that he purposely ran so he would be incarcerated with a friend who is currently jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center. Sardina got his wish and was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and jailed on suspicion of willful reckless driving, possession of a legend drug, flight to avoid arrest and expired in-transit stickers.
