A Hastings man is in critical condition after his vehicle was struck by an Amtrak train near Minden.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, at around 2:15 a.m. on Sunday morning, a Honda Pilot with two occupants was driving through Minden when they apparently both fell asleep. When they awoke, they were stuck on the Burlington Northern tracks.
The patrol says the driver, 29-year-old Zachary Osgood, attempted to call for help in getting the vehicle off the tracks. Authorities say that as several people attempted to remove the vehicle, the train approached traveling at around 75 mph and struck the vehicle.
The vehicle caught fire, ejecting Osgood.
Osgood was transported to CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney where he is listed in criticasl contition.
Troopers say Osgood's passenger was out of the vehicle when it was struck.
Alcohol is believed to a factor in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
