LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Prison officials say an inmate has died at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln.

A news release from the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services say 53-year-old Jay Witt died Wednesday afternoon at the prison. While the cause of death has not been determined, the release said, Witt was being treated for an unnamed medical condition at the time of his death.

Witt, who entered the prison system in October 2014, was serving a 30- to 40-year sentence for manslaughter and weapons counts in the 2013 killing of William Furlong at the Hells Angels Clubhouse in Omaha.

State law requires a grand jury investigation whenever someone dies in state custody.
