A 28-year-old McCook man has died following a head on collision with a semi.

At around 2:36 p.m. on Monday, deputies with the Frontier County Sheriff's Office and first responders from Maywood and Curtis responded to an injury accident on Highway 83, just north of Maywood.

According to the Sheriff's office, an investigation shows that a 2007 Ford Taurus, driven by Keith Padilla, was traveling southbound when witnesses say Padilla attempted to pass another vehicle. As Padilla attempted to pass, he collided head on with a northbound semi.

Authorities say Padilla was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the semi was transported to McCook Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation by the Frontier County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska State Patrol.

Drugs and alcohol are believed to have been a factor in the crash, however, further investigation is needed.
