Study: Nebraska ranks No. 34 for new cancer cases in 2020

A new study projects Nebraska will have the No. 34 most new cancer cases in 2020. Utah is expected to have by far the fewest.

While this deadly disease strikes at random, every year we learn more about lifestyle choices that can mitigate risk, and certain areas of the country have historically seen higher cancer rates than others.

SeniorLiving.org today released a study on States Most At-Risk For Cancer in 2020 which analyzed decades of historical data and future projections from the American Cancer Society; as well as lifestyle choices linked to cancer in each state including smoking, obesity and HPV vaccination.

Key Findings in Nebraska:

·         Ranks No. 34 with 545.9 projected new cancer cases per 100,000 people in 2020. The national average is 555.6 per 100,000.

·         15.4% of adults smoke cigarettes, 34.1% of adults are obese and 58.3% are up to date on their HPV vaccinations.

·         Men are at greater risk than women. (186.6 per 100,000 for men, 135.5 for women)

·         Breast Cancer and Lung Cancer are the two most common types expected

Key National Findings:

·         1.8 million new cancer cases are projected in 2020, 5,000 per day.

·         5 most at-risk states include: Florida, West Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Michigan.

·         5 least at-risk states include: Utah, Alaska, California, Texas, New Mexico.
