NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The COVID-19 outbreak forced the cancellation of sports and activities all across our state and country.
But, for the cast of West Side Story at North Platte High School, the news that the show would not go on was broken to them as they prepared for their final dress rehearsal before opening night.
If you're familiar with plays and musicals, you know that any video or photo reproduction is strictly prohibited under federal copyright law. In some cases, organizations can pay a fee for the rights to record a performance for educational or nostalgic purposes.
But, extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary solutions and publishers are authorizing schools nationwide to air live streams of previously recorded productions.
So, now, the show will go on April 27 through May 3 with permission from Music Theatre International, which owns the rights to the musical.
