Melvin Sappenfield (1938-2020

Melvin Sappenfield, 81, of North Platte, Nebraska died at the North Platte Care Center on Saturday, April 18, 2020.

Melvin was born at Leoti, Kansas to Pearl and Ruth Sappenfield on May 13, 1938. He grew up in Leoti and Atwood, Kansas, then graduated from Atwood High School. Melvin joined the U.S. Navy in 1956 then returned home following his discharge to help take care of his dad.

On November 11, 1962, Melvin married LaVonne McClelland in Kansas where they lived. Eight years later they moved to North Platte and later divorced. Melvin later met Joleen Shaw, of Gothenburg, Nebraska and they became good friends. They were together until she passed away in 2013.

Melvin worked for Lystads Pest Control (which later became Eco Lab) until retiring in 2001. In retirement he became a fisherman and camper and liked to golf. He was a member of Indian Meadows Golf Course and a Past Master Mason in Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Ruth; and brother, Merle Sappenfield.

Melvin is survived by his sons, Michael (Gina) Sappenfield, of North Platte, and Jarett Sappenfield, of Hutchinson, Kansas; three  grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other family.

Cremation was chosen and a family burial will be in Kansas. The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
