Storm opens regular season with win over Phantoms

The Tri-City Storm opened the 2023-2024 Regular Season with a 2-1 victory over the defending Clark Cup Champions at the 2023 DICK’s Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic. Nolan Roed, and Dallas Vieau each scored their first career USHL goals for the Storm in the victory. Cameron Korpi backstopped Tri-City to the win in net. The Storm returns to action tomorrow night in the team’s second and final game of the Fall Classic. Tri-City will battle the Sioux Falls Stampede on FedEx Rink #1 in tomorrow’s matchup. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm CT.

Nolan Roed netted the first goal scored by any player in the USHL this season at 15:59 of Wednesday’s opening period. The goal was scored even strength, and was assisted by Nick Peluso, and Trevor Connelly. The Storm heavily outshot the Phantoms by a 12-2 margin in the 1st period.

Dallas Vieau scored his first goal with the Storm at 8:41 of Wednesday’s middle period. The goal was assisted by Ryan Smith, and Trevor Connelly. Tri-City outshot Youngstown 8-7 in the 2nd period, and the Storm carried a two-goal advantage into Wednesday’s final period.

The lone goal of the 3rd period was netted with less than a minute to play by Youngstown’s Sascha Boumedienne. The Phantoms lifted goaltender Owen Bartoszkiewicz for an extra attacker, and fired a slapshot past Cameron Korpi for the team’s only scoring play of the evening. The goal was assisted by Andrew Strathmann, and Charlie Cerrato. The Storm was outshot 15-11 in the 3rd period, but outshot the Phantoms 31-24 overall in a winning effort in the team’s opening contest of this year’s sixty-two-game regular season.

Cameron Korpi recorded his first win of the season in net for Tri-City after turning away 23 of Youngstown’s 24 shots on goal during the battle. Korpi also denied Youngstown’s Charlie Cerrato on a penalty shot attempt at 12:17 of Wednesday’s 3rd period. Owen Bartoszkiewicz dropped the game in goal for the Phantoms. He made 29 saves on 31 shots in Youngstown’s one-goal loss to Tri-City.

Tri-City hits the ice again on Thursday, September 21st, in a neutral-site game against the Sioux Falls Stampede at the 2023 DICK’s Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic.
