October is designated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHSTA as Pedestrian safety month. The North Platte Police Department wants to remind pedestrians to follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic as close to the curb as possible.
Always keep alert, and don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes and ears off of the road. Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections where drivers expect pedestrians. Look for cars in all directions including those turning left or right.
Make eye contact with drivers as they approach to make sure you are seen. Be visible by wearing bright colors during the day and reflective materials and use a flashlight at night, and watch for cars entering or leaving driveways and backing up in parking lots.
