Wanda Lee (Kinsley) Schubauer, age 83, of rural Todd County, South Dakota passed away January 30, 2021 at Cherry County Hospital in Valentine, NE of natural causes. She was born August 27, 1937, in rural Todd County, SD to Dell and Bernice (Figert) Kinsley, the youngest of their six children.
Wanda attended a small country elementary school and graduated from Todd County High School in 1955. She received her teaching certificate from Black Hills State Teacher’s College in 1957 and taught school in Todd County 1957-1958.
Wanda married Theodore Maximillian (“Ted”) Schubauer June 20, 1958. They lived in rural Todd County during their 47 years of marriage - operating a dairy farm, raising chickens, gardening, canning and cooking, all while driving seven children to 4-H events all over the neighborhood. She enjoyed crocheting and made colorful afghans for all of her children and grandchildren. Other hobbies included growing a beautiful flower garden including her favorite gladiolus, reading, baking, watching monarch butterflies and solving crossword puzzles.
Wanda gave back to her community by serving for many years on the county election board. She enjoyed trips with Ted for the Rural Electric Association. In her later years, she worked for the Todd County Auditor’s office, the TC Middle School Library and her favorite, the TC High School Library. She thoroughly enjoyed her Ladybug club gatherings, card parties, summer picnics, and family reunions.
Grateful for sharing her life are her seven children, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Michael of Valentine, NE, Tayler (Jaylynn), Alex, Jennifer, Jason (Lizzie) and daughter Ella; Bret, Irving, TX; Joy (Chuck) Gess, Lakewood, CO, Matthew and Michelle; Neil (Toni), Rochester, MN, Elizabeth, Courtney and Travis (Shelby) and son Holden; Brian (Charlene), Malmo, NE, Danielle and Bailee; Carl, rural Todd County and Tammy (Joe) Bodeson, Rapid City, SD. She is also survived by sister Edith Neiss of Rapid City, in-laws Greg and Carol Schubauer, Ferne Schubauer, and Monica Francke, all of Valentine.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ted, parents, sisters Mavis Wiedman, Mildred Davenport and Antha Furrey, and brother Berdell Kinsley.
Private family Mass of Christian Burial and memorial service for Wanda Schubauer, age 83, will be held at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Valentine, Nebraska. A public graveside service will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at noon at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine, Nebraska. No visitation will be held.
