He lived in Colorado, Idaho, Oklahoma, California before settling in Nebraska in 1993.  While in Oklahoma, he met and married Jean Harris and two daughters were born to this union, Krista Fox and Kerry Stracke.  From Oklahoma, he moved to California where he met and married Patricia Drews.  To this union, a son was born, Kurt Hansell.  Years later, Gene married Shirley (Boyer) Rector.  They moved back to Nebraska where they owned a quarter horse ranch and Gene continued to work as an independent truck driver.  He drove a truck most of his life as an owner/operator.  He wore out many a good truck and put well over a million miles on them.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; older brother, Harvey; younger sister, Judy Cooper.
He is survived by wife, Shirley Hubbard; children, Krista, Kerry, and Kurt; sister-in-law, Kathy Hubbard; brother-in-law, Jerry Cooper; 8 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

At Gene’s request, there will be no funeral services.  For many years, he has said “if you can’t come see me when I’m alive, don’t bother when I’m dead!”  Per his wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered down in the timber at the ranch where he would feed the mares.
