Gary D. Marrs of Sutherland passed away at age 85 on October 15, 2023,in Sutherland.
Gary was born July 10, 1938, to James and Mable (Cotton) Marrs in Wallace. When he was 10, the family moved to Sutherland and that is where he attended Sutherland Public School, graduating in 1956.
After high school, Gary went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad and worked until 1961 when he took a job with Natural Gas Distributing Company, relocating to Ogallala in 1972. In 1984, Gary moved back to Sutherland and retired from the Gas Company. In 1997, he went to work for Hi-Line Coop fertilizer plant until 2003. In 2007, Gary decided to help out a local farmer with harvest until finally retiring in 2021 as his health started to deteriorate.
On April 3, 1959, Gary married Patsy A. Morris in Sutherland and the couple had three daughters.
Gary was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, served as a volunteer for the Ogallala and Sutherland Fire Departments, and was on the search and rescue SCUBA team for many years.
Gary enjoyed camping, fishing and working in his garden. In the last few years he loved seeing the Union Pacific Big Boy and the 844 steam engines in North Platte. His great-grandsons, Remington and Colton, shared the love of trains with him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Karen; brother, Dennis; and grandson, Tyler Andersen.
Gary is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patsy; their daughters, Cindy Condreay, Deborah (Colin) Andersen and Janette (James) Dicke; five grandchildren, Heather Daves, Cletus and Cody Stickley, Tiara Obertance and Austin Dicke; nine great-grandchildren, Courtney, Keaton, Bryce and Tristen Stickley, Allie Maynor, Colton Obertance, Deziray Scammell, Remington and Kairi Dicke; as well as other family.
Cremation was chosen and graveside service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, November 4, in Riverview Cemetery at Sutherland. Please come in your casual clothes.
