Fred Fisher, Jr., age 85, of North Platte, died at Centennial Park Retirement Village on August 28, 2021.
Fred was born to Fred, Sr. and Helen Fisher in Loup City on July 14, 1936. When he was 3 years old his parents divorced, so he ended up moving around with his family to Colorado, Oregon, Wyoming and back to Nebraska. In 1948, Fred's mother sent him to live with his dad in North Platte. These were emotional times for Fred.
He graduated from NPHS in 1954 then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Following his discharge in '58, Fred returned to North Platte where he went to work for Pittsburgh Plateglass. A year later he was hired by the FAA to be a flight controller trainee, thus beginning a long career as a flight controller. His work took him to Indiana, Kansas, and Iowa then he was trained in radar and moved to Lincoln in 1977. Fred retired from the FAA in 1990 and eventually returned to North Platte.
He was a member of First Christian Church and Eagle Aeries #2839 and in his free time he enjoyed building cabinets.
Fred is survived by his wife, Judy, of Lincoln; children, Vernon (Tracy) Fisher, of Gibbon, Michael Fisher, Wayne (Sheryal) Fisher and Rebecca Fisher, of Lincoln, and Jon Fisher and Deborah Fisher, of North Platte; his sister, Janet Tanner, and half brother, Larry Whiting, of Denver, CO; as well as 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and other family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Fisher; sister, Mildred Wazenski; and son, Brian Fisher.
Cremation was chosen. Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at First Christian Church. The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or prior to the service. Private family inurnment will be in Ft. McPherson National Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the donor's choice. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
