Gilbert R. Hiatt, age 62 of North Platte, NE passed away on July 22, 2021, at his home. He was born on November 24, 1958, to Irving and Vivian (Cooper) Hiatt in North Platte, NE. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1977. On June 21, 1980, Gilbert married the love of his life Cathy McClellen. Through their 41 years together they were blessed with four children: Jeremiah, Michael, Jordan, and Maegan.
After graduation, Gilbert spent many years working with his family at Hiatt construction. In 1984 he decided to make a change and drove a truck for Pepsi. Several years later he was hired by Miller Brewing Co. and in 1993 he hired on at the Union Pacific Railroad and worked as an engineer until retiring in 2017.
Gilbert had a love for sports. He had a competitive spirit and enjoyed playing, watching, refereeing, and coaching his kids. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting & fishing and the many stories that came with them. He also loved and took pride in his many outdoor and indoor projects including transforming two houses into homes on his acreage on Platte Valley Road.
Gilbert was a family man. His actions spoke highly on what he lived for. He was so proud watching his children grow up to become adults and achieving their goals and dreams. He also was blessed with 10 grandkids. They are each unique and have a special place in Papa’s heart. He enjoyed listening and watching all of them have fun. Ten at once was sometimes a handful, but he always encouraged there was room for more!
He is survived by his wife, Cathy; three sons, Jeremiah (Alexis) of Lincoln, NE, Michael (Brittany) of Miamisburg, Ohio, Jordan (Tara) of North Platte, NE; daughter Maegan of Lincoln, NE; his ten Grandchildren, Lily, Brody, Mason, Scarlett, Ivy, Paisley, Lulu, Jaxon, Violet, Malcolm and Arko (Grand Dog); Father, Irving P. Hiatt, his siblings, Irv (Renae) of North Platte, Vern of North Platte, Laura (Lyle) Miller of North Platte, Judy (Tim) Nowak of Menasha, WI; Mother and Father in-law Kay and Lyle McClellen of North Platte; Brother and sister in-laws, Deb (Christopher) Keith of Fountain, CO, Karen (Terry) Waite of North Platte, Roger (Pam) Mcclellen of Charleston, SC, Larry (Shana) McClellen of Lincoln, NE, John (Brenda) McClellen, Loretta (Ben) Pavelka of North Platte, Michelle (Mark) Pieper of Lincoln, NE; numerous nieces and nephews who were very dear to him.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his Mother Vivian Hiatt, his grandparents Gilbert W. and Ida Hiatt, Ray Cooper and wife, Angel Baby Hiatt, nephew Brett McClellen, and many other special family members that were near and dear to his heart.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with The Reverend Joshua Brown Celebrating. Burial will follow at the North Platte City Cemetery. Rosary will be 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 26, 2021 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Memorial book signing will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 26, 2021 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.
