Richard Berg (1935-2024)

Richard (Dick) Berg entered into his eternal home on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at the age of 88 years.  He was a born October 5, 1935, to Orlen M. Berg and Gladys O. (Bunde) Berg in Sioux Falls, SD.

He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1958 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corp of Engineers.  At the completion of his active duty and 7 ½ years of reserve duty , he completed his military obligation as a Captain.

He married Carolyn L. Niedan on December 22, 1957, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Midland, SD.  They lived in Rapid City, SD and had one daughter (Jeannine Berg Porter).

Dick worked for the SD Dept of highways as a District Maintenance Engineer for 14 years.  He then formed an Architectural Engineering partnership with Hengel, Berg, and Associates from 1972 to 1981.  He was a registered civil engineer in SD, WY, NE, MT, TX and CO.  He was active in the American Consulting Engineers Council and was South Dakota ACEC President and South Dakota National Director of ACEC.

Dick later moved to Littleton, CO to work for Project Construction Corporation as a construction project manager. He then worked for Jefferson County Schools for 9 years in the construction management department.

Dick leaves his daughter, Jeannine Kay Porter , CO along with 2 grandsons: Christopher Porter and wife Amanda and great grandchildren Ainsley, Henry and Callum of Humble, TX and Mychal Porter and wife Tara and great granddaughters Evelyn and Ava.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 57.5 years, Carolyn, parents Orlen and Gladys Berg, sister Gloria Kadinger and brother Orlen Jr.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday August 9, 2024, at North Platte Cemetery. Carpenter Memorial Chapel  has been entrusted with the arrangements.
