Mavis A. Slack, 87, passed away May 25, 2024 at The Birch in Sutherland. She was born May 14, 1937 to William and Eva (Stuckert) Nitsche in Mason City, Nebraska.
Mavis grew up in Mason City and attended high school there. She married Leon Slack on May 9, 1959 in Denver, Colorado. After getting married, the couple moved to Sutherland briefly before moving to McCook and then returning to Sutherland in 1971. They moved to Lincoln in 1990 for Leon’s job with Consolidated Freightways and lived there until his retirement in 1995. The couple then moved to the family farm south of Sutherland until Leon’s passing in 2008. Mavis then moved back to her parents' original home in Sutherland. Mavis was employed by Northwestern Bell in North Platte from 1968-1975. Mavis’ hobbies included gardening, flowers, and bird watching.
Mavis is survived by son Kirk (Joy) Slack of Sutherland; grandchildren, Kirk L. Slack II, Brandon Slack, Rebecca Slack; great grandson, Jayden Slack; son, Mark (Anne) Turner of League City, Texas; grandchildren, Amanda, Eric, Hailey; great grandsons, Carter, Conner, Joseph, Ashtin; numerous other family members and many friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, William and Eva; husband, Leon in 2008; son, Tony in 1996.

As per Mavis’ wishes, cremation was chosen and graveside services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Riverview Cemetery near Sutherland. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
